to lie about my due date

baby's due date is MIL bday. But have fibbed to the masses and told them it's a week earlier.

childish? yes i know? irrational? yup

MIL swings from being a lovely lady to a nightmare and recently has pissed me off a lot with her copius amounts of judmental/critical comments.

anyone else ever do this?

Actually, I think it's a great idea although would definitely have gone for a date a week AFTER her birthday as then it also cuts out all those 'Is it here yet ??' daily calls as well

My friend did this when her son was due on her sisters birthday! she doesn't speak to her sister! So she was due on 24th Sept and told her mum etc she was due round the start of oct... not so much of a lie really

I'm also sure that my SIL lied to my mum about their baby's due date. She said Middle of October [never specified a date] Yet when the baby was born on 2nd October [my mum's birthday ] I heard someone say to SIL how unusual it was for a first baby to be born on their due date LOL

ds already shares his bday with a family member so this is just too much really

god the little sod is gonna come on it's due date isn't it.

Hmmm.....were you early/late with DS1 ? Not that it's an exact science though is it I'm afraid. I know it's all the silly, irrational things you say but tbh - I agree with you !!

God no YANBU, I would do the same, I couldn't deal with all the preening etc etc if MIL thought the baby was due on her birthday, I think only 4%of babies come on their due date anyway so I wouldn't worry about it.

Weirdly my due date with ds was the same as what my sisters had been with her dd (10) they were both 14 days over due and hence have same due date and same b/day.

I was tempted to lie with mine - I was 4 weeks late with DD and the idea of having to go through the overdue questions again seemed like hell.

Didn't in the end, but completely understand why you have. Babies come when they are ready, no-one needs to know.

I got so fed up with MIL and my mum phoning EVERY DAY when DD1 was due that I lied about the other two's due dates to take the pressure off me. Worked a treat. I totally don't see why everyone gets so hung up about due dates anyway - I know hardly anyone whose children were born on theirs. So you are not being unreasonable at all, though you may have missed a trick by not pretending it is later rather than earlier

YANBU - totally agree, especially if she is being difficult.

Odd due date coincidence - a friend has 3 ds. The first one was born a week late and the second a week early - on each other's due dates!!

hmm perhaps when i have my dating scan i can fiddle with dates

oh sod just as long as it doesn't come on her bday!

Yup, my dates and scan dates didn't match - only had sex once (well, not the only time, but once off the pill), KNEW my dates.

She came 4 weeks late, very overdue looking, developmentally 4 weeks ahead of a newborn, and a manky placenta

flame know what you mean there my dd was 5weeks late by the dates from lmp and only week late by scan, and i didnt get any stretch marks till after she were due by my dates and if she was due by the scan dates i must of had false positive as i tested positive at cpl days before af was due!

lol, I'd forgotten about that - I was pregnant by the test before she had been conceived!

my mom swears by going by the lmp dates not scan dates my dd was all hairy and dry and very big at 8lb 5oz and she is very quick at picking things up now too!

I think it's a fab idea to lie about your due date. Ds was 20 days late and I hated EVERYONE who kept asking me when he was going to arrive. Buy yourself some time.

I would share your (irrational) dislike of your due date being on the same day as your MIL's b/day btw!!

Report
fruitful · 19/07/2007 13:19

Well if it is born on your MIL's bday, you can say "oh how sad, we'll never have time to see you on your birthday, ever again". That'll shut her up.

I try to only say the month when I'm due. And if they press for an exact date, I say I'd love to know the date, wouldn't it be nice to know the date, wow if I knew the date I could ring it on the calendar and get everything planned and sorted, oh wouldn't that be lovely, maybe when my grandchildren are having babies they'll be able to tell us the date in advance ... They usually get the message.

Mind you I've never made it to my due date. This time if people start on "ooh not long now, bet you can't wait" I'll silence them with "the longer the better, perhaps this one won't need to go in an incubator".

We need an [evil cackle] emoticon you know.

Damn I WISH Id lied about my due date. Especially now, at five days overdue, when the world and his dog ring me EVERY SINGLE DAY to ask "any news yet?".

Am dying to reply "yes, had it last week, did I forget to mention?".

Tactical naivety from a first-timer, methinks. If ever I do this again I will say its at least two weeks later. Sigh.

WinkyWinkola · 19/07/2007 19:08

No, YANBU but surely it's better to say the due date is later than it actually is?

I lied about my DD's due date. I said it was two weeks later. Then she came two weeks early after a v. stressful weekend with the in laws. Everyone thought she was premature which was tricky to explain seeing as she was 9lbs! I just said they'd got the due date wrong.

But at least I got some peace unlike with DS when I was being called, texted, emailed etc all the time even when everyone knew I was in labour.

ConnorTraceptive · 19/07/2007 19:10

probably would have been better to say later, just panicked and came out with first date that sprang to mind

So, Moorhen, any news then?

Actually next time someone asks that, how about "ooh yes!" [pause] "Russia has expelled 4 diplomats! And there are severe weather warnings in Yorkshire!".

Gaaaaaaaaah!!!!! head revolves, red lights shoot from eyes

Actually, fruitful, I love your approach. Will adopt from tomorrow morning.

Might even get me reading newspapers again so am getting input from things other than Property Ladder re-runs and the Jeremy Kyle Show...
