So twice I’ve come back to my room on holiday and the maid has already been (clean towels, bed made etc)

Then I’m just getting a drink and getting changed and I hear a knock at the door and someone just walks in (don’t give me chance to open the door) and says house keeping, how was your service?

I've had that happen too on my last two holidays. It seems to be a recent thing. I assume they are looking for a tip.

It’s just odd because the second time she was genuinely surprised to see me in the room ... why’s shes just going to walk into an empty room?

I’d speak to reception and check.
It could be that they’re checking the cleaners are doing a good job but equally could be dodgy?
I’d also be less than impressed with them walking straight in!!

Yeah I definitely agree about the tip - I would have left a good tip on my last day.

But yes just walking into our room is very wrong and I don’t like it.

Definitely check with reception, it could be as innocent as she's left the room furthest from the stairs on floor 7 to go get something from downstairs and then inadvertantly gone straight back to "same room" but on floor 8.

It could also be a maid who has spotted something of value in your room and wanted to go back to collect it when the rest of the team were on another floor.

Unfortunately I doubt you'll ever know the answer but definitely check with reception.

I always leave a tip when I leave, not every day. If it’s a different chambermaid they can work it out. I would definitely say something at the front desk.

It’s happened twice so not a one off and they have a key so just let themselves in.

Most hotels have key cards and the housekeepers will have a main one to open all doors anyway. You can't usually lock them from outside...and if she was in and they'd already been you wouldn't expect anyone to be coming in. I only lock the doors at night/put chain on when I'm in a hotel.

Absolutely complain to reception. I agree they’re probably angling for a tip but it’s completely unacceptable that they didn’t knock first. And if you can lock your door from the inside then do.
I had something similar in a ski chalet a few years ago- it wasn’t cleaning but to access the balcony to clear dangerous overhanging snow but the guy didn’t knock. He found me in bed napping, then went next door, didn’t knock again and walked in on the woman stark naked having just come out of the shower. We got a Fortnum’s hamper and a £300 voucher for a future trip for the inconvenience, god knows what next door got; I didn’t ask!

In posher hotels they used to "prepare"your bed ready for the evening (open bedsheets, chocolate on pillow...)... Could it be that?

We do in America yes but it depends where op is.

It does sound a bit strange. If we are staying in a hotel for quite a few nights eg holiday, we leave a tip first night and periodically throughout our stay.

We always leave a tip on the bed for the "morning" maid who does the cleaning and bed changing, plus a smaller one for the "turn down" maid who comes in to tidy up the bed, check towels and leave the chocolate. That sounds what is going on for the OP.
It is better to leave a daily tip, rather than at the end, as the 'last day' maid may not be the one who has looked after you throughout, if it is her day off.

We always leave a small tip daily which we find works better as we tend to then get better housekeeping service during the holiday.

Are you sure it wasn't the "Turn down service" which normally takes place between 5.00pm and 7.00pm or thereabouts? I sometimes find they have a tendency to just knock once and walk in at this time which I too find a bit annoying as I'm usually getting ready for dinner.

I always leave a daily tip, I don't know when shifts change and I would be cross if the person who had cleaned for a few days missed out on the tip because my last day was her day off.

Meant to say if I am in the room I snib the lock down so I don't get surprised by hotel staff with key access.

could be they are coming back to put their feet up for a bit if they are finished work but it's not clocking off time yet - I did that a lot when I worked in a very posh hyde park hotel as a chambermaid way back in the late 80s (student job - I'd no idea - I'd never even stayed in a hotel before myself at that stage). Watched most of wimbledon that way one summer, it was wonderful ... (needless to say I'd be horrified at the thought of anyone doing that in my room in a hotel these days!!)
