So i work in a pub, i was serving a family of four (2 kids between 6 and 10ish) the kids were off playing in the play area when i bought over their meals. The kids both had chicken nuggets and chips (no veg) and as soon as i put the plates down the mother poured salt all over both of the kids meals without even asking them if they wanted it!!!

Why? Why why why would you ever do this?! Why do the childen need any extra salt to an already salty meal? She didn't even give them a choice just poured it all over the meals without even asking them. They dont even get a choice in whether they get an addrd salt diet or not. Id never even dream of putting any added salt in mine or my children food. Also any salt for that matter, I wont buy any high in salt foods.

Sorry this is a rant just upset me the children didnt even get a choice in whether they eat salt or not. Start as you mean to go on i suppose...

That's horrible.

Chicken nuggets and chips aren't healthy to begin with - if it's a pub lunch it's not necessarily a sample of what they usually eat. Chicken nuggets and chips is a very bland meal - I would certainly want to jazz it up with seasoning.

I rarely add salt to anything (chips excluded). I couldn’t imagine adding it to something my child eats!

Meh- pub meal out they added salt. The probably eat organic lentils the rat of the time. wink

I assume the mothers knows her children well enough to know they will ask for salt anyway? So YABU for thinking shes 'taking away their choice'. and YABU for judging her for allowing her children to have nuggets and chips at a pub day out.

But YANBU for pointing out that adding salt is bad and not usually needed on most dishes. People eat way too much unnecessary salt as a habit rather than for taste.

I wish pub could offer smaller portions of just "food" for children.
I am bored of paying a full adult price for a plate of something when my kids will only eat less than half.

Lol it's a pub meal pretty much nothing you serve there will be healthy or low salt.

BorisBadunov Fri 26-Apr-19 12:13:37

Just to be clear, did she give the kids a choice?

Notjudesmum Fri 26-Apr-19 12:14:17

I’ve always eaten a lot of salt....my dad used to cover his food in it and I suppose I followed his lead! I never add salt to anything for my kids and I don’t put salt out on the table when they eat. DS1 will only eat tomato if it has a little salt on but that’s ok.
When I was on holiday in Crete recently there was a lady filling up her 11/12 month olds bottle with Coke....😳 the LO had finished her milk and the last bit was tipped out on the floor and replaced with almost a full can of Coke...I couldn’t believe my eyes!! Poor kids teeth!!

ILoveMaxiBondi Fri 26-Apr-19 12:14:42

I’m betting it’s because the children always pour too much on when they do it themselves so she did it before they came back and a salt power struggle ensued.

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx Fri 26-Apr-19 12:15:35

I somewhat doubt that!
Just made me cringe so much. Like do people not realise what salt can do. Obviously a 1 time thing wont do much but it looked like the norm to her.
I hide the salt from my partner most of the time grin

Bantameggs Fri 26-Apr-19 12:15:42

@BorisBadunov grin

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking Fri 26-Apr-19 12:16:02

I'm not sure I could get disgusted over it. Maybe if she took a shit in the middle of the pub, hthat might up my disgust levels a bit.

I'm more disgusted that childrens menus only ever seem to offer chips and nuggets and reheated baked beans as 'veg'.

Id never even dream of putting any added salt in mine or my children food. Also any salt for that matter, I wont buy any high in salt foods. I'm just looking for parenting medal you think you qualify for.

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx Fri 26-Apr-19 12:18:09

And no she didnt give them a choice they were about 10ft away playing. I know nothing we serve will be that healthy thats exactly why the mother shouldnt of added salt.

PlantPotParrot Fri 26-Apr-19 12:18:46

everyone saying oh its unhealthy anyway like that makes it ok, lets add some class a's into it and sprinkle it with fag ash.... cos if its unhealthy anyway what does it matter hmm

ridiculous. maybe it is unhealthy, but there's no need to make it more unhealthy for absolutely no reason!

kids (or anyone for that matter) don't need to add salt to their food on their plate.

Flamingosnbears Fri 26-Apr-19 12:18:48

It's not good, but it's not really anyone else's business, I agree with the poster who said she probably knows her children best to know if they would like seasoning.

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx Fri 26-Apr-19 12:20:30

@plainspeakingstraighttalking .. oh hello sarcy mumsnet comment we meet again

FissionChips Fri 26-Apr-19 12:20:50

Are you sure she didn’t just sprinkle a little salt over their food? I find it hard to believe she would pour salt onto her children’s food.

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx Fri 26-Apr-19 12:21:42

She shook the fast flowing salt pot over the plate for about 5 seconds

PlantPotParrot Fri 26-Apr-19 12:23:03

I agree with the poster who said she probably knows her children best to know if they would like seasoning

my child would probably like chocolate for breakfast every day and not to have a bed time, but I don't indulge him because I am not stupid or negligent.

AlpacaPicnic Fri 26-Apr-19 12:23:50

Maybe she fancied some salty chips, and thought that if she salted her kids food, they wouldn't fancy it, then she could 'help' them eat them?!

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking Fri 26-Apr-19 12:24:46

@Sabrina - no idea who you are, not memorable - did you mean sarky? I endeavour to olige on a waxing crescent moon

geologyrocks Fri 26-Apr-19 12:25:26

You hide salt from your partner? Controlling much?

LilFGS Fri 26-Apr-19 12:27:46

This could have been me. My DC have a medical condition where they must eat an extremely high salt diet or, to be blunt, they will die. I get the odd look from judgemental pearl-clutchers like you and I couldn’t give a fuck. Maybe widen your narrow little mind and realise you might not have all the facts before you make someone else feel uncomfortable or slag them off on the internet.
