AIBU?

To be shocked by this interaction in Morrison’s ?

I was doing my weekly shop at the supermarket today when the lady at the checkout started talking to DD (aged 2). DD is a chatty little thing so all was fine.
The lady asked DD’s name to which DD replied with her name. The lady then said to me oh I prefer and then said a different name that starts with the same sound. I thought this was odd but never mind!
After that she started asking DD questions like are you a good girl? is mummy a good girl? And then just as I was paying she said to DD “Does Mummy like to have a drink?”
I hadn’t even bought any wine? AIBU in thinking this was a strange thing to say?

She sounds a bit odd. Very strange.

Maybe she'd had a little tipple 😂

Sounds very very odd. Even if you had a couple of bottles in the trolley there’s no need to ask a child that.

Sounds a bit odd. She wasn't thinking of asking you out on a date was she? Wink Grin

Completely inappropriate. I’d be tempted to report to store manager

How weird! My only explanation is that your Morrison’s, like my Sainsbury’s, employs people with LDs/MH issues. And sometimes their client interactions aren’t appropriate.

This is why I use self service checkouts.

sounds like learning difficulties, agree,
no harm done though.

This 🔼

Our Morrison's does this too & we also had an incident in the past where my DD was much more upset by a total stranger suddenly scooping her up to cuddle & apologise to her, after knocking her over with a trolley, than she was she was by being hurt by the trolley.

The lady did have SN & meant no harm, but still inappropriate

Were you wearing your I LOVE WINE t-shirt Grin ?

That would make me incredibly uncomfortable. And I would likely have a word with her manager. I'd be perhaps gentle if I suspected SEN, more constructive criticism than a complaint, but it is worth raising.

It's not exactly the conversation you expect while paying for your shopping and it would make me slightly uncomfortable but I wouldn't report it.
I would wonder whether there were any disabilities at play. My local Sainsbury's hires people with disabilities and I wouldn't want to complain just incase it discourages them from hiring disabled people in the future.

FWIW I have ASD and have had MH issues in the last, I'd have really appreciated a quiet word if I was being very weird/ made someone uncomfortable. It would allow me to alter.my behaviour and be a.bit more aware.

You didn’t have win? Did you have gin Grin

Wine not win!

BurrSir · 23/04/2019 17:07

No Belulah. No wine or gin or even win. I wouldn’t have suspected SEN from previous times I’ve been through her till but she may be apt at masking.

I wouldn't report it, it seems like she's lucky to have a job and if she loses it she'd be hard pushed to find another. It was odd but not worth risking her job over. I feel a bit sad for her tbh.

How old was the lady? My 88 grandmother comes out with some right corkers these days especially in supermarkets and the gp surgery Grin

I wouldn’t find this shocking. She’s probably been told she has to interact with customers and struggles to know what to say.

Oh just realised it was the person on the checkout. That is a bit odd.

Wierd things to say. Rude too.
Maybe she is socially awkward and is sitting now cringing at what she's just said!
Strange job for someone if they are socially inept though!

I mean she surely has SEN, I'd be very surprised otherwise.

YABU.
Clearly she's been told to interact with the customers and if you will dress your toddler in a 'My Mummy's a dipsomaniac' t-shirt what can you expect? Grin

It's being rather over sensitive to obsess or even complain about this no?

Report
AWishForWingsThatWork · 23/04/2019 17:21

I think I would have asked her very firmly, "Have YOU been drinking?" Because that is not an appropriate question to be asking your 2 year old. Very off.
