To be all flustered about buying a new mattress

First world problem I know, so many people have no bed, let alone a comfy one. We are in the market for a new mattress and I just don't know where to start.

I sleep on my front, him on his side. We prefer a firmer rather than softer mattress. I have a few issues with my hips, he hates being hot and sweaty in bed.

Anyone have any experience of a 'bed in a box' like Casper, Emma, Otti, Leesa etc. They do 100 day trial (but what do they do with the mattress if it's sent back??!!)

Cheers

We just bought a tempur mattress the Dreams one with the cooling top layer. We'll be paying it off forever but it's the best money we've ever spent.

We have a Leesa, think its amazing, but its softer rather than firmer. My DH loves firmer mattresses but loves it though.

We tried the Emma as had heard how great the memory foam was. We hated it, SO HOT! We’d kept our old mattress just in case, so sent theirs back as within 100 days. Company was great but those type of mattresses obviously not for us, so we were glad we’d taken advantage of the trial. Mattresses sent back are recovered and resold, no reason not to.

Oh and our ‘cooling top layer’ didn’t!

We have a Simba and I love it. I'm a front sleeper.

find a local independent place and go in to try them out. I bought our new mattress a month ago and it's really not the kind of thing you can pick without knowing what you like. I tried the simba in John Lewis and hated it, I don't get all the hype anyway we ended up with a lovely spring mattress with pillow top and it's like sleeping on a cloud

We are usually hot blooded but haven't been too hot on ours so far. It's such a big investment that I didn't want to risk the online only ones, I've seen mixed reviews about the returns for the 100 day trial ones.

Just out the other side of exactly the same process! DH has dodgy joint issues, I’m 26 weeks pregnant and uncomfortable so tall order to find something right - and so expensive.

I went with an Emma, but managed to land on a sale weekend with 25% off so wasn’t quite as £££. It was the 100 trial that swung it in the end. Beware, they stink when first unpacked, chemical/ foam/ burnt type smell. Luckily we were away for weekend so left it to air for 3 days, you definitely wouldn’t want to sleep on it the first night - and it needs 6 hours to plump up to full thickness after being in the box.

Overall, I’m really happy with it with just one minor blip - although it’s not overly warm when you’re sleeping, if you get out and back in again the mattress stays unusually warm I think. Prob good in winter though.

I bought mine at John Lewis. It was own brand as they make them themselves. Pricy but worth it.

The latest Tempur mattresses don’t have the making you hot issue that the previous ones did. We’ve just ordered one. Cost a fortune, but sleeping is important. Bensons have a bed you can try out that’s adjustable on a iPad for firmness. The sales person can make it firmer or softer.

We bought an Emma, decided it was worth giving it a try with the 100 day trial and we love it!

Ikea also do 100 day trial but you are not buying unseen and can go and try them out in the shop to see what suits.
Wouldn't go on a bank holiday though

We also went with a Tempur mattress, the firmest option with Cool Touch technology. We’re both side sleepers (firmer is supposed to be better for side sleepers as you get more hip support).

I have an Otty and love it, and my friend who had a lie-down on it liked it so much they bought one too. The sent back ones are apparently donated to homeless charities.

I have a Simba and it's the best money I've ever spent. The delivery people took away my old mattress and all the packaging for the new one.

I really recommend trying them, I'd say it's medium/firm but very supportive and doesn't get too warm at all.

Memory foam is overrated imho. Too hard, hurts my hips, end up in a lumpy groove unless I sleep on my back perfectly still all night, and they're really hot. I reckon it's an expensive fad Grin yes I know I'll be shouted down!!

I like a mid-range sprung one. Preferably not the pocket springs as they seem to have a slope at the edge.

Ive heard that memory foam can make you sweat so havent tried those. I last bought from m & s as their quality is reliable and they dont have too many to choose from so makes it easier. Wait until they have a sale and get 20% off.
