AIBU?

To smoke in my own garden

I am a smoker. I smoke 10 fags a day and I'm not planning on giving it up yet (one day!).

In smoke in my garden, I've got two neighbours either side and one every time I'm smoking will come out and say 'it stinks out here' and will start to cough loudly.

It's really getting on my nerves, I can't move down the end of the garden because it's tiny and would make no difference at all but AIBU to hate the passive aggressive comments when I'm smoking in my garden?

Like you, I hate that kind of passive aggressive stuff, but the problem is, you aren't just smoking in your own garden, you're smoking in their gardens too.

You have every right to smoke in your garden, as and when you want.

Your neighbours are right though, smoking does stink, and if they want to pass a passive aggressive comment on it if it’s stinking their garden out when they want to use it there’s not much you can do about that either

You can hate the comments in your garden, but your neighbour hates the smell in their garden... so not much you can do about it really.
The problem with smoking in your garden is that it does spread and other people can't stop it going into theirs.

Obviously you're not in the wrong, but I'd find the smell frustrating too.

How would you feel if your neighbours were playing loud music in their garden? Technically it's their garden but it affects you. Same with your smoking.

My NDN smoke and the other side smoke weed. It’s pretty unpleasant for us when sat out on the patio tbh and I’d rather they went down the end but also appreciate that noise/smells etc from other people are kind of part and parcel of having neighbors. Within reason obvs. 10 a day isn’t that much though.

If I had to smell a neighbours cigarette smoke in my garden where my kids play, I’d be pissed off too.

You’ve got the right to do it. You don’t have the right for people to not be pissed off by it.

Technically YANBU because it is your garden but I feel for your neighbour

I hate the smell, but I would never comment. Just ignore them, it's your garden.

I used to have a neighbour who smoked and it was awful. It blew in our windows, was worse on sunny days when I wanted to be outside too and was deeply unpleasant. I said nothing because it's none of my business but it IS horrible to live next to a smoker in summer.

Get yourself a little smoking hut for the garden.

YABU to complain about your neighbours not liking it, you are spoiling their enjoyment of their garden by smoking even though it is in your garden.

If you want to smoke, have the courage of your convictions and do it in your own home. If you’re not prepared to live with the stench, why should others?

When I rule the world I will ban smoking outdoors. Keep your shitty smells inside your own house thanks. Poison yourself not everyone around you and don't complain when no one wants to visit. 🤮

I would hate to live next door to a smoker. Yuck. Especially with kids. You could do yourself and everyone else a favour and give up- 10 a day could still kill you and those you inflict passive smoking on. Sympathy to your neighbours!

Just ignore them, mine used to make snide comments despite the fact that we lived on a very polluted road which was much worse than a whiff of fag smoke.

I don't smoke but for fuck sake sake why donto they just go in when you are havinga fag? You only smoke 10 a day. My neighbour smokes a few in the afternoon and it isn't a massive deal. They are being rude and pathetic.

They are being v passive aggressive. Keep on until YOU want to give up.
You are probably a good and lovely person. That is so much more important than a whiff of smoke from a jugemental person

It’s stinks let’s be honest here. Your fag smell is wafting into their house just the same as a bbq or even a nice smelling flower but your smoke is affecting them. Yabu

My neighbour in my last flat used to smoke and I couldn’t ever open my windows even on a blazing hot day, or the smoke would just come straight into my bedroom.

Now the neighbour opposite us in our block smokes (tobacco and other stuff) and it often comes right under our door and into our flat. I can be lying in bed inhaling someone else’s smoke and I hate it so much.

Sorry OP, you’re entitled to smoke in your own garden but I think your neighbours are entitled to moan about it because if you don’t smoke then it really is horrible being forced to inhale someone else’s.

Oh my OP, didn't you know mnetters would never put anything other than organic quinoa into their bodies?

Yanbu, it's your garden. The neighbour can pop back inside for the few minutes you're smoking and stop the passive aggressive fuckery if that's much of an issue. I hate the pantomimes some people feel the need to put on, either speak up if you have a problem or get over yourself.

You don’t like the sound of their voices coming into your garden, but you think it’s ok for your smoke to go into their garden? Hmm

werideatdawn · 21/04/2019 17:06

I feel bad for them. You can do what you want but it's having a negative impact on them which is unfortunate.

Build a smoking shed. I'd be really angry if my neighbours smoked in the garden. You don't know if they have health problems

Go out the front. That seems to be a popular choice on here today 😄

I agree with a pp. What is stopping you from smoking IN your home rather than your garden. Much less antisocial that way.
