To wonder what it is about Shotgun by George Ezra...

...that seems to send preschoolers mental?!

Kids parties etc this song comes on and they go nuts! The girls in DDs nursery say the kids ask for it, but I have friends with kids at different nurseries who say the same thing so it can’t just be DDs pals.

I mean it’s catchy and upbeat but so are lots of songs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Boom45 Fri 19-Apr-19 13:45:54

Dunno what it is but one of my colleagues got quite upset when i described it as a "kids song" a few weeks ago....

StillCoughingandLaughing Fri 19-Apr-19 13:46:30

I always think there’s something unbearably smug about George Ezra.

ScaredofMomo Fri 19-Apr-19 13:47:20

All the kids loved it at the primary school disco I helped at!

DizzyPhillips Fri 19-Apr-19 13:47:55

I quite like him I liked Budapest.

Charlottejbt Fri 19-Apr-19 13:48:44

I don't know, but I'm considerably older than a preschooler and I've dreamed of that song and woken up singing it. (C'mon subconscious, I know you know better music than that...) I like George's voice and the winsome silliness of the video, but earworms of that calibre should seriously come with a health warning.

DizzyPhillips Fri 19-Apr-19 13:50:35

We are currently on a long car journey and have played Shotgun, Grace Kelly and Shiny Happy People on a loop at DD4s request. With the occasional light relief of the Stick Song.

Good times. confused

LightDrizzle Fri 19-Apr-19 13:50:50

I’ve always thought it sounded like a novelty song. I’m not surprised kids like it.

PinkBuffalo Fri 19-Apr-19 13:52:57

We've even had that song in spin class grin
I do like a bit of George Ezra. I find the likes of ed Sheeran too whiny blush

Charlottejbt Fri 19-Apr-19 13:55:23

I always think there’s something unbearably smug about George Ezra.

He does this kind of faux-smug smile to camera which I always see as signifying that he's in on the joke too, and I always see it as good-natured and inclusive if that makes sense. He's appealing because he doesn't do that affected "cool" thing and because he's one of very few current male singers who actually has a very good voice - perhaps the only one, I don't know because I stopped following pop music in 1987. smile

WontYouDance Fri 19-Apr-19 13:55:51

My 4 year old loves this song, as do her full nursery class. It is catchy I suppose! But kids do seem to especially love it

FindaPenny Fri 19-Apr-19 14:02:02

I think it sounds like a couple other songs. I feel I can hear a bit of 'forget you' by C-lo Green.... Might be completely wrong though.

Nearlythere1 Fri 19-Apr-19 14:04:39

I think it's absolutely brilliant to have a song about that kids and adults both like, and which isn't sexualised. Just a good old sing-a-long happy song. Can't stand little mix etc for that reason. I hate seeing my nieces and nephews singing and dancing to "shout out to my ex" etc.

SquishySquirmy Fri 19-Apr-19 14:06:02

Yes my 5 year old loves it.
That, baby shark and Uptown funk (or up-down funky-up as she calls it) are the faves at the moment.

Nearlythere1 Fri 19-Apr-19 14:06:04

OP, Grace Kelly! What a brilliant idea, not heard that in years and i bet my nieces and nephews would love it!

BarbieJellyBabyBrain Fri 19-Apr-19 14:08:03

Yeah kids love it - and Paradise as well.

Saltandpepperpringles Fri 19-Apr-19 14:10:20

My 4 year old is obsessed too - as is all of reception!

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual Fri 19-Apr-19 14:10:54

This is literally the only song my 5 year old has ever known by name.

Dunno, maybe it's because it says 'gun' a lot, they notice it?! My ds is obsessed with guns though...

SadOtter Fri 19-Apr-19 14:12:08

I don't know but its a hit at school discos too and we've been using it as a warm up in PE, even usually PE avoiding kids will dance to it!

itsgoodtobehome Fri 19-Apr-19 14:13:26

Yep - my 6 year old’s favourite song. It’s the first ‘pop’ song that he has ever really been into.

AwdBovril Fri 19-Apr-19 14:14:13

DD has been obsessed with it since the first time she heard it, she's 6. Annoyingly catchy.

Flyinga Fri 19-Apr-19 14:15:06

I'd imagine it's the rhythm?

XiCi Fri 19-Apr-19 14:15:49

It's strange isn't it. I remember all the kids going wild to it on holiday last year. I've not really seen reactions like it to any other song.

gamerwidow Fri 19-Apr-19 14:17:37

It’s probably because it’s got a really simple tune and rhythm. The kids love it at our school discos too.
They like some funny stuff though. Weirdest experience was hearing 200 kids sing shouting ‘I can’t feel my face’ in complete innocence.

Xenadog Fri 19-Apr-19 14:21:11

Thank goodness it isn’t just my DD (5) who has this obsession. Yes she does go wild when it is played. But there are worse things she could want to be in to.

Passthecherrycoke Fri 19-Apr-19 14:22:42

I do laugh at my 3 year old belting out “bikini bottoms lager tops” in the car grin

NeverSayFreelance Fri 19-Apr-19 14:23:49

God I hate that song 😂 I can't stand the way George Ezra sings. Budapest drove me mad when it used to play 10x times a day at my work when it came out.

Cbatothinkofaname Fri 19-Apr-19 14:24:53

It’s the rhythm. Friend of mine who’s a primary teacher uses it as a ‘fun’ activity at the end of PE lessons and the kids all gallop round the hall.

PortiaCastis Fri 19-Apr-19 14:32:02

I take people on tours and play George Ezra CD on the bus and yep it gets adults and children singing particularly the children, I think they're just catchy simple songs

YouWinAgain Fri 19-Apr-19 14:34:08

Just played it for my 3 year old (think she'd not know) and I got "Oh mummy it's George, I love this" and started dancing grin

bobstersmum Fri 19-Apr-19 14:34:45

Maybe he's smug because he's got a big willy? Not that I've ever wondered about his willy...

chocolatelog Fri 19-Apr-19 14:36:20

My 4 year old loves it but I haven't a clue where she's heard it. She hasn't had a school disco yet and we don't play George Ezra 🤷🏻‍♀️

woodhill Fri 19-Apr-19 14:36:40

Love George Ezra, like most of his songs.

Iputthescrewinthetuna Fri 19-Apr-19 14:38:49

My DD (reception) loves it too!
The school got them to perform a 'harvest' version of it!

'I'll be riding tractors, underneath the hot sun
Feeling like I'm some one. Oohooohh

Home grown new pototoes, green tomatoes, gotta hit the farm!
Gotta hit the farm.

I actually can't remember the real words!

Flyinga Fri 19-Apr-19 14:40:08

Dunno, maybe it's because it says 'gun' a lot, they notice it?! My ds is obsessed with guns though...

I suspect that's also an element. Doubt many tots know what riding shotgun means.

RuffleCrow Fri 19-Apr-19 14:40:28

Everything about him is annoying - especially the voice and the Mr Whippy hair.

SleepingStandingUp Fri 19-Apr-19 14:42:21

I know he's young and not very attractive, but his singing voice makes me come over all hot and unuecessary

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha Fri 19-Apr-19 14:43:18

Yep, my 4 year old has loved that song since it came out. I have a funny clip of him last summer swerving along on the plasma bike, shirt off, shades on, singing "I'll be with a shotgun" and other misheard lyrics.

His current favourite is "Sweet but a side cow".

Derpess Fri 19-Apr-19 14:44:19

My 5 year old is obsessed with this, I just asked her and she said she loves it because she loves guns and the sun.
I've now set her off singing it again 🙈

NotSoThinLizzy Fri 19-Apr-19 14:44:28

Makes my DS fall asleep 😂 hes 18 months

AndNoneForGretchenWieners Fri 19-Apr-19 14:45:05

It's not just little kids. DS is 18 and it's on heavy rotation in his car!

bruffin Fri 19-Apr-19 14:49:58

I always think there’s something unbearably smug about George Ezra
He is a local lad and by all accounts really lovely. Heard 2 stories about him, which show him as very down to earth and nice.

woodhill Fri 19-Apr-19 14:50:26

I think his voice his unusual for a young man, and he is good looking.

Scott Walker had a very deep distinctive voice in the 60s. He sounded like he should be older

M3lon Fri 19-Apr-19 14:51:58

relieved to hear this isn't just us....

Twotome Fri 19-Apr-19 14:53:28

Yep my 5 year olds favourite!

Catchingbentcoppers Fri 19-Apr-19 14:54:33

Grace Kelly

Oh DD LOVED this song when it first came out, she was only about 3!

TellySavalashairbrush Fri 19-Apr-19 14:55:56

I can never understand what he’s singing to be honest.

gauntletthrown Fri 19-Apr-19 14:59:27

My 6yo loves this song and I hate it!

I think he has a good voice but his music is v middle of the road and he doesn't look like he sounds!

LaurieMarlow Fri 19-Apr-19 15:03:11

OMG. It’s like you’re reading my mind. Ds4 had it on a loop for an hour this morning to practice ‘ninja dancing’. Whatever the fuck that is. grin

dustarr73 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:04:12

@Charlottejbt i agree, but listen to Brendon Urie. His voice is amazing

Charlottejbt Fri 19-Apr-19 15:15:25

@dustarr73 Thanks for the recommendation! I'd never heard of Brendan Urie but I'm listening to his "best live vocals" on Youtube and he does have a lovely voice.

MatchSetPoint Fri 19-Apr-19 15:26:50

Oh god I’m sick of it! my five year old wanted in on repeat for an hours journey on Wednesda, I liked it for the first three times...

Alsohuman Fri 19-Apr-19 15:30:11

Oh Lord, my bloody brain keeps singing it to me now. It’s such an ear worm.

Nousernameforme Fri 19-Apr-19 15:31:34

Never heard of this but giving it a go with my five year old.

sunshineandshowers21 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:32:53

my five year old son is obsessed with george ezra! he love shotgun and always wants me to put it on for him in the car. i actually kind of fancy george ezra tbh...

Nousernameforme Fri 19-Apr-19 15:34:35

No reaction whatsoever put this on afterwards and he is bouncing away

DarkDarkNight Fri 19-Apr-19 15:35:26

I don’t know but it’s always on at my Son’s School discos along with Paradise and they even play it in Reception during golden time as a treat.

I think it’s a really good song for kids to like. I’d much rather this than Baby Shark. I don’t think he’s smug at all, I think he seems like a nice guy, slightly awkward and not even trying to be Mr Cool.

dudsville Fri 19-Apr-19 15:36:58

ooh, I love shotgun and uptown funk!

BlueEyedBengal Fri 19-Apr-19 15:37:53

My DS6 can't stop singing this in the house in the car, he's not getting fed up yet!

TheSultanofPingu Fri 19-Apr-19 15:40:27

It's the most annoying song ever (to me anyway)
I loathe it.

Slazengerbag Fri 19-Apr-19 15:42:10

Maybe Iran because he burps at 59 seconds in.

Willow2017 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:42:43

I dont know but i think if i hear it one more time i might comit Hari Kari !

Its on at least once an hour and as its on all day at work there is no escape😠 that and about 8 other so called 'hits' shit over and over........its bloody torture.

foreverwashing Fri 19-Apr-19 15:45:43

It's Gerry Cinnamon with my teeny and his ilk (which I am not terribly pleased about, but that's another thread).

I used to play him Baby Mozart hmm

LaurieMarlow Fri 19-Apr-19 15:51:54

I’m in town and guess what the busker’s belting out? grin

Disfordarkchocolate Fri 19-Apr-19 16:13:16

I love this, and most George Ezra. Great voice and lovely moves.

motherheroic Fri 19-Apr-19 16:34:24

Probably because he says things like 'see you later alligator'.

Halija Fri 19-Apr-19 16:38:59

I’ve never listened to the original song, only to the David Cameron parody.

It is very catchy though.

Halija Fri 19-Apr-19 16:39:54

For a little light relief...

Charlottejbt Fri 19-Apr-19 16:45:13

grin at the Cameron version!

Moomoomoomoomoo Fri 19-Apr-19 17:25:23

My 4 year old loves it.

ThisMustBeMyDream Fri 19-Apr-19 17:34:14

My 17, 6 and 3 year olds all love it. As do I grin. It's a full house hit here! Not many of those around for the ages of my children!

Speaking of Mika, we play him a lot here. Try Popular... if you don't mind a good old ear worm grin

WeTookVows Fri 19-Apr-19 17:39:51

My kids all love Shotgun. I actually think Paradise and Budapest are much better songs.

Agree with PP that George Ezra always seems in on the joke and doesn't take himself too seriously.

fourquenelles Fri 19-Apr-19 17:48:47

Claim to fame alert. I had a fag with George Ezra outside the venue he was playing about 5 years ago just before he hit the big time. He was lovely, down to earth and very sweet.

jpclarke Fri 19-Apr-19 17:54:38

My 2 year old sings along to this song!! And has been since she was 18 months. It's just catchy she also loves shut up and dance with me.

MistyMinge Fri 19-Apr-19 17:57:27

This is a timely thread, I was only thinking the same this morning. My 6 and 4 year absolutely love it and I often hear them singing it to themselves. I love it too. It makes me feel summery and happy.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc Fri 19-Apr-19 17:58:04

Its ds 5 favourite song! God knows why

ipswichwitch Fri 19-Apr-19 18:14:08

Both DC love Shotgun, which is nice since we can’t play Uptown Funk anymore - DS2 kept singing “uptown fuck you up!” instead 😂

PumpkinPie2016 Fri 19-Apr-19 18:14:30

My DS is 5 and loves that song toogrin his drama group did it in their panto and it was by far his favourite (closely followed by baby shark!).

I quite like George Ezra - his songs are quite catchy and his voice is very good, which these days, is a bit of a rarity!

ipswichwitch Fri 19-Apr-19 18:15:19

Should have added he’s 5 and doesn’t have a clue! His big brother sings “uptown funky what” which is much less embarrassing

LucyBabs Fri 19-Apr-19 18:19:29

Pmsl at "uptown fuck you up" :-)

Shotgun is so popular in my dc school.. They even learnt it in Irish and sang it in assembly

PortiaCastis Fri 19-Apr-19 20:05:53

Ha uptown fuck you up is very funny and the Cameron vid is hilarious

Goneback2school Fri 19-Apr-19 20:12:29

Had a sing song on the way home from the minders this evening to this song with my 6 and 4 year olds. They love it and wouldn't get out of the car until it was over.

IncyWincyGrownUp Fri 19-Apr-19 20:21:28

It’s been on heavy rotation in our house too. The entire school can sing it too, they belt it out while waiting for assembly to start.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken Fri 19-Apr-19 20:25:11

Yep, five year old DS loves it!

alittleprivacy Fri 19-Apr-19 20:28:49

It’s a big hit with my 6yo and his whole class too. They can all sing the whole thing. In fairness though despite my DS’s enjoyment of it his strong preference is for 80s pop with Chain Reaction, I’m So Excited and The Riddle being our current car playlist.

Ellenborough Fri 19-Apr-19 20:30:46

I can't stand George Ezra and I've been trying to work out why for months, as everyone else seems to think he's great. It just hit me the other day what it is. All his songs are SO repetitive. He writes to a very consistent formula; find a catchy hook, rinse and repeat at nauseam. That's probably why small children like it.

The other group that did this was Scouting for Girls. Just keep repeating the same two lines over and over again for three minutes and bingo, you have a hit. hmm

chillpizza Fri 19-Apr-19 20:32:39

My toddler daughter asks for the Ezra hot sun song and marshmallows (Marshmello happier) songs. She’s obsessed.

chillpizza Fri 19-Apr-19 20:35:06

Oh and she knows hold my girl by mr Ezra too. She would be amazing at song pop as she can work out a song in 5 seconds.

Andanotherthingg Fri 19-Apr-19 20:35:22

I have an amazing video of dd (4.5) rocking out to it with a plastic guitar grin it's her favourite.. and one of mine too blush

Owlettele Fri 19-Apr-19 20:40:58

I don't think it's the reference to guns tbf. Dd loves this but used to sing shotco before she realised it said shotgun.

I think it's the catchy rhythm and that the words are easily identified and would be familiar to pre schoolers so they can follow it easier than some pre-school songs ?! The verses are quite simple to pick up .

Andanotherthingg Fri 19-Apr-19 20:58:58

Isn't shotgun in reference to "riding shotgun" (like he says in the song) as in sitting in the front passenger seat??

Andanotherthingg Fri 19-Apr-19 21:02:18

Oh wait... Never mind that isn't what you meant blush

Must remember to rtft.. grin

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha Fri 19-Apr-19 21:20:52

I mentioned this thread to a friend and she told me her daughter goes around singing "I'll be riding someone, underneath the hot sun". This is in Dublin too.

Hecateh Fri 19-Apr-19 21:26:00

better than Baby Shark grin grin grin

Mesmeri Fri 19-Apr-19 21:45:22

I like George Ezra's version of Mungo Jerry's In The Summertime with updated lyrics. And I like the video of him singing Listen to the Man with Ian McKellen.

Owlettele Fri 19-Apr-19 21:46:41

LotsToThinkOf Fri 19-Apr-19 21:49:10

My 6 and 3yo love George Ezra, as do most of their friends and I have no idea what the fascination is!

Whitelisbon Fri 19-Apr-19 21:59:59

My 5yo twins and 3yo love George Ezra, shotgun is a particular favourite.
The 3yo has finally worked out how to say alexa, so we listen to shotgun approx every 10 minutes from morning to bedtime.
I've taken to making alexa angry (pressing the mute button) when I've had enough.

rosablue Fri 19-Apr-19 23:35:36

Has anybody else noticed that for nearly every other George Ezra song, you can sing Shotgun along to it and it works! You have to choose your moment, usually it’s around the chorus or catchy bits, but you can sing the two together like a slightly odd ‘harmony’ or songs mixed together...

Try it - it’s a different distraction when all his songs are on. It works quite well on plenty of other songs too grin

LucyBabs Sat 20-Apr-19 01:52:18

tawdry brilliant!
