To think there are better things to donate €100m to than rebuilding Notre Dame?

I know no one has to donate anything but 2 French billionaires have reportedly donated €100m and €200m respectively towards rebuilding Notre Dame.

The Catholic Church is not exactly short of money.

It just doesn’t really sit right with me spending all that money on a building when it could be used for so many other things

Good job it's not you donating the money then isn't it

Poppyputthekettleon Tue 16-Apr-19 09:09:28

biscuit

Gomyownway Tue 16-Apr-19 09:09:37

You could say that about literally anything though?

There will always be a more worthy cause/charity.

DGRossetti Tue 16-Apr-19 09:09:44

Well £100million could buy you 15 loads of wasted Brexit planning. For context. Or 10 DUP votes ...

It's such another sign that we live in a world where 'things' are valued more than human life.

Good on them, far better way to spend the money as suggested by DGR above. Assuming you had 300m € how would you spend it OP?

There will always be something more worthy whatever money is donated to.

Go make a cuppa and stop over thinking.

It's almost as if private individuals can spend their money as they choose! Shocking, isn't it?

Do you really think these billionaires don't donate lots of money to other very worthy causes as well? Notre Dame is what's in the news right now, hence the publicity.

Dermymc Tue 16-Apr-19 09:11:23

Saves other people/the state donating.

Personally I think it needs rebuilding. Sites like Notre Dame have huge historic and cultural significance. It's not damaged enough to leave as ruins (like Coventry Cathedral) therefore rebuilding is the only option.

Heratige sites cost an awful lot to maintain. In the UK most churches are responsible for their own building and get no government funding.

A witness said he doesn't know who started the fire but he has a hunch..

In France churches built before 1905 belong to the state. The state is responsible for upkeep. Notre Dame is much more than just a religious edifice. It’s a cultural symbol. It’s a tourist attraction. It’s a masterpiece of architecture. I think you are mean spirited. The two family’s that have so far pledged money capitalize their brands on the image of French savoir faire and artisanat. It is logical that they donate to save cultural patrimoine. They are also creating longstanding legacy for their various brands. But for now - I don’t really think that money should be the sticking point. It’s just time to mourn the loss of a beautiful old building that has seen Paris through centuries. That the building is a religious one is neither here nor there really right now.

You are free to donate your money as you wish, as is the person donating the €100m.

BettysLeftTentacle Tue 16-Apr-19 09:19:11

How do you know they don’t donate to other causes too? You do understand that you can care about more than one thing at once?

JustDanceAddict Tue 16-Apr-19 09:19:23

Lol at Buster

Private individuals can do what they want with their money. How do you know they haven’t donated to other causes too?

DorisDances Tue 16-Apr-19 09:20:11

Laughed out loud Buster!

WillGymForPizza Tue 16-Apr-19 09:22:49

They are billionaires and 100 million Euros is probably small change to them. How do you know that they don't donate to other causes?

Op it really isn’t any of your business- maybe they care about preserving beautiful historical things - which I wholeheartedly applaud
