To ask what weird/stupid stuff you did as a kid

I think I was a bit of a strange child although maybe I’m not the only one.

One of my favourite things to do aged about 5/6 was to steal a bar of soap and some scissors, find a corner to hide in and shave wafer thin slices of soap off until there was nothing but a big pile of soap flakes. I got into trouble every time but it didn’t stop me.

Our family car had two rear facing seats at the back and if I was sitting there I used sit dead still and make blank-faced unblinking eye contact with the people behind for as long as possible. I think I managed it for about an hour once.

Once aged about 10 I set out to drink as much water as possible just to see how much I could drink. I managed a few litres (I’m aware now that I could have killed myself)

I brought a large dehydrated dead fish I’d found on the beach to show and tell at school when I was 7. Unfortunately it was the last day before the summer holidays and I accidentally left it behind. I think they had to get someone to come in in the end to deal with the terrible smell.

When I was 12 I coloured my entire face in with bright pink lipstick. It took about two days to get rid of completely.

Was anyone else a little weirdo? I think I’m pretty normal now btw!

I used to do the same with the soap, except I shaved it with my nails

I used to play with wood lice

I used to use the arm of the settee as a horse and ride it through imaginary forests as I was a musketeer ... never got “Barbies” but musketeers ... I wasn’t just fascinated by them, I was one.

I was diagnosed as autistic in my 30s

I used to eat the milk teeth toothpaste from aqua fresh. This was back before they changed the recipe.

But man it tasted good.

Grin
Drink mouthwash
Build ‘ant homes’ in the garden and force them to live in it
Count to 100 before doing anything (first stage of my ocd beginning but didn’t know it until I was an adult)
Take a bite out of food then put it back and swapped for a ‘new’ one which id eat
I also whisper as often as I’d remember to rather than talking for no reason but to annoy everyone Hmm

@RUOKHUN I used to do the same, I took it to school one day Blush I remember the tube/box being a pale turquoise colour?
As an adult it's still my favourite toothpaste brand.

Another toothpaste one (though this was Signal): when I was about 3 or 4 I used to suck the toothpaste out of the tube (metal in those days) and use the screw cap as a ‘goblet’ to drink from. When my mum discovered me, I told her I was having a feast.

Another thing I did was sit inside the pushchair rain cover on the floor and pack all my toys inside with me.

I also used to play schools with the buttons in my mums button box, organising them into year groups and ‘teach’ them.

I used to sit in the front seat of the car with my mum driving and pretend to be dead. I used to want someone to find me.
(wierd as I know)

I was thirsty at the seaside, so I took a straw to the sea and started drinking.

I was not a bright child!

Yes, always been a weird one. I used to pour salt on my head so I could sit picking it out.

Shut myself into the storage cupboards with the lights off and it was pitch black. I'd stay there for hours.

My DD does this too!

OP I love the idea of you staring out of the back of the car freaking out the drivers behind. Grin

I used to pick loose tiny bits of brick and cement from outside the house and eat it.

We did the soap thing too. Except we tried to carve things from it. I remember you could buy carved soaps so maybe it was a new thing we fancied copying? 🤷‍♀️

Used to stand with the mannequins in shops and pretend to be one.

On car journeys I always thought it was a race and every time we overtook a car we’d be in the lead. Until we saw another one.

Deliberately put sand in my hair to pick it out.

Lock the spare bedroom door because it was scary.

Every label on every item of clothing needed to be cut out. I’m still a bit like this as an adult.

Used to make up stories about myself which ran for years. I whispered them to myself under my breath, things I did every day were incorporated into the ‘story’.

There’s loads of things. Looking back I had a lot of autistic traits, although I’d in no way say I was typically autistic as an adult, if that makes sense.

Used to leave biscuits out for Barbie's thinking they were real. When it was time for their baths, I used to beg them to close their eyes as the water was soapy.

Cringing...

There are loads of videos on Instagram of soap being shaved. V satisfying to watch.

We used to make fizzy juice using Andrews liver salts.

Once went on a snipping rampage around the house - curtains, the sofa, my clothes, brothers clothes, towels, bedding, toys - nothing snippable was safe from me and the scissors. Mum considered getting me a psychiatric assessment.

Also I used to take big bites of butter, yum

I used to sharpen wax crayons and put the shavings on the radiator to make "patterns". Well - I think I did it once and never did it again as I got into so much trouble Grin DSis and I also used to take all the paper off our wax crayons and call it "The bare naked collection".

I used to pretend to be a horse when I was eating Jaffa Cakes. First I'd nibble all the biscuit/cakey stuff from the edges, then flake the chocolate off, peel the orange bit off and eat that, and then the last nibbled bit of naked cake I would put flat on my hand and pretend to be a horse having a special horse treat Confused I would do that with the ones in my packed lunch, no wonder everyone at school thought I was weird.

I made up a game with my friend at school that when it was time to walk to swimming, it would keep your magic powers topped up if you stepped on every manhole cover, but never ever one with squares on, if you stepped on one with squares, it would totally drain your power. Not that weird, except that it became a kind of compulsion and I went out of my way to stand on manhole covers and avoid ones with squares for years. I even drove myself mad trying to work out whether it was good or bad luck to step on one with rectangles or diamonds!

I used to bite the sides of my wooden bunk bed because it felt nice.

Oh that reminds me, I also used to steal amoxicillin liquid out of the fridge if me or my brother were ill and drink a bit as I loved the flavour so much (the yellow one that was like banana milkshake)

And we used to put all the liquids we could think of through the sodastream (don’t try milk, it explodes)

I once wondered how much it would hurt to stab myself with a sharp pencil - the lead snapped off and got stuck in my leg! Although it didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would.

I used to eat dried pasta.

I loved popping the buds of plants in my grandparents garden Blush

Smashed the soap in the school toilets.
Ate paper.
Picked my wallpaper off.
Dropped a few paces behind my mum and walked as if I had a disabled leg. Fuck only knows what that was about.

Sitting in the car on the motorway in traffic, the coiled wires that attach a lorry's cab to the trailer I used to call "Juicy glumpshires" and I'd pretend I was grabbing them and handing them out to everyone in the car. The colour of the wire denoted the flavour. I used to really like it when you'd be stuck in a traffic jam and the lorry to your left would move making it feel like we were rolling backwards.

My DM said one apple each a day but I loved them and would eat 3 or 4 and hide the cores behind the U bend of the loo, not thinking that my mum was the one that cleaned it! I was raised a Catholic and even took that 'sin' to a confessional!!!

I used to eat cat food. And toothpaste though not at the same time.

I had a fascination with matches which resulted me dropping a lot one in my parents bathroom sink and melting a small section of it.

I once painted my hands with white gloss paint. Cried when I couldn’t get it off.

My mum still says I was a weird child 😂
