AIBU?

To walk Brighton 10k if needs be

I've been so ill since Friday. Not actual tonsilitis or flu but every part of me hurts, really sore throat, banging head, cough, no sleep, diahorrea etc.
I've been training to run Brighton 10k this weekend. I booked it after watching the marathon there the last 2 years, I just loved the atmosphere etc and whilst I was certain I wouldn't be able to run a marathon, I've now got myself to about a 1hr 9 10k - which I wanted to aim for sub 1hr in Brighton.
Thing is - this illness has completely floored me - I can not see how I'll be totally recovered by Sunday, I pray I'm feeling better but putting one foot in front of the other is hard at the moment.
Anyway - if I was feeling ok, do you think you're allowed to walk it? That's my aibu - do people walk these things? Tbf at the moment I can't walk to the toilet without crying so I'm not sure I'll be recovered at all, even to do that but I can hope.
Worst case I go be ill in a hotel room for the weekend I guess - or anyone got any tips for miraculous recovery?

Extra strength vitamin c tablet and some Echinacea. You'll be fine.

If you're ill don't do it. It's a 10k run not walking on the moon. Run 10k another dsy when you are better.

Whats the point?

Report

The point is how much I've been looking forwards to it, the money we've raised etc.
Of course I won't if I'm still like this - just been so excited for the whole weekend etc, feeling very sorry for myself

In the nicest possible way OP - it's not fair to the other runners for you to go while you are ill and spread germs everywhere. They won't want to catch what you have. Stay home and rest.

It's a run. You can run any time.

There is a cut off time and I don't think it would allow you to walk (unless power walk) as they need to clear the course as part of it is used by the marathon runners later

Is there a time limit? Don't go and walk it all. It's not fair on the marshalls etc.

Few people may walk this- but from what I have seen previous years is they started clearing up and opening roads ahead of the walkers/slowest runners, which just have been very disheartening

If you are better, you'll definitely be able to walk it. I run/walk all my runs.
However, the most important thing is your health. I understand how much time and effort will have gone into your training, and how disappointing it will be to not do it. Try not to let that affect your decision, there's no point in making yourself worse for the sake of forcing yourself to do it.
I'm doing the Worthing 10k on the 1st June, which isn't too far away from Brighton, so maybe do that one instead? Flowers

What's the time limit? If you can walk it in that time the go for it.

I felt rotten the day before a triathlon last year but the adrenalin gets you going and I got a respectable enough time.

Can you defer the places? Some races let you right to the last minute.

Check the cut off time. A lot of 10ks have a cut off of around 2 hours in which case walking quickly would be fine

Argh! Why didn't you mention that money had been raised for charity in the OP? That's the most important aspect of the entire AIBU question!

If there was no charity money involved, I'd say skip it. A sub 1 hour 10k is legit running, you trained and deserve a proper PB. Wait and do another 10k when feeling better.

The money raised complicates things. One of the reasons I never run for charity or donate to people running for charity.

Wait and see if you feel better as Sunday is quite a long way away. If you feel like it do it, if not then rest and do the Worthing one.

There are lots of 10k runs. Just book another one for when you are well. By all means you can walk it. A fast walk would see you finish at about 1hr 30. HOWEVER if you have even a hint of diarrhea this will be exacerbated and potentially very embarrassing moment. Just book another and focus on that. Flowers

Well the money still goes to charity and the rest of the team are still running so that's ok.
Guess it's just wait and see, I'm 100% going as got nice hotel to die in, I was supposed to be driving but my husband can do that.

OP it's Wednesday. You may be feeling much better by Sunday. You can't really answer this question until Sunday morning!

If you are feeling up to it, yes you can walk it, the cut off will probably be around 1 hour 30 so you may need to jog a little too. Can you "jeff" it - ie walk-run (named after an American called Jeff surname I can't remember). A common strategy is to run 4 minutes and then walk for one. You need to start doing it from the beginning - ignore those who say "oh she's walking already" - just make sure you don't start near the front. If you do that you'll be well within the cut-off.

Sunday is still quite a way off, hopefully you should be well enough to do it at a gentle jog even if you’re not up for a personal best.

You can still support. I have found the odd shouted comment of support has really helped me round "run now, wine later!" Was a personal favourite! Grin

And enjoy your hotel. Flowers

You have to check if they reopen roads and divert slow people onto shorter routes - quite a lot of larger 10k races do this. That said, the limits are usually fairly generous as a lot of people run/walk or have disabilities etc. and take part. You might be able to run some if you rest, have plenty of chicken soup, vitamin tablets, zinc and echinacea.

I just looked at the results - loads took longer than 1:30 last year, up to 2 hrs, you'll be fine to walk it. Good luck!

I didn't think of checking last year's results!
I've got my positive pants on, I can't feel any worse, I'll just forget the pb (life never goes as planned does it) and enjoy the atmosphere (fingers crossed!!)
