Baby Change - toilet priority.

I was in my local supermarket this afternoon, my 6 month old had a poo explosion at same time my almost 3 year old decided he needed a wee.

There was a sign on the men's loo saying it was out of order - please use baby change.
Supermarket was busy and, about 5 men were queueing in a single queue for the baby change and the separate disabled loo. I joined the end of the queue and waited for a couple of minutes. Toddler was getting desperate so I then took him into the ladies (no queue) and he used the loo there.

Came back out fully expecting the guy that had joined behind me in the baby change queue (who was now at the front) to let me back in at same place - but he refused, and said I'd need to wait again as he couldn't wait any longer and I should have just changed my baby in the ladies (the floor was pretty dirty and he'd had a poo explosion so I felt a contained baby change was required), by this time there were another 4 males in the queue, who pretended I was invisible.

WIBU to be really pissed off?

In fairness he needed to go, your 6 month old could wait a min or two so I don't see the issue with him going (since you'd left the queue).

Just to clarify he was already in the queue behind me, so if I hadn't have left he would have had to wait anyway.

It’s not ideal but he certainly didn’t have to let you go first especially if he needed to go and he knew you would be a long time

Not ideal situation but you should be annoyed with store and their lack of facilities rather than people who are queuing to use the loo. Not ideal but you could have changed your baby on the floor - the men couldn't have used the floor as a toilet though.
Or, gone out to your car and changed baby in the boot.

YANBU. A disabled person would have taken priority and it’s not like you hadn’t been waiting before.
I think it’s very inconsiderate and I’d have spoken to a manager about changing the signage - babies and disabled take priority.

Their logic might have been that they would be less than a minute or so. You would probably be 5 mins or so. I think they were fine

And how do you know that the man in question wasn’t disabled?

If the gents was out of order I’m not sure what else people expect the supermarket to do. They can’t magic up more toilets!

If I was in a queue, I would not be happy if someone let someone in ahead to deal with a poo explosion - that could be a fifteen minute job. And it's not just him who has to wait, its everyone behind him.

I can see both points, I think I would probably have said to him that I was leaving the queue for my child and would be back in 2 mins

Does no one else have a folding change mat in their change bag? I'd change him on that on the floor. It's going to get covered in poo and need a good clean later anyway.

Sorry but you left the queue. Your baby isn't going to get any more pooey for waiting an extra minute or two.

And I definitely wouldn't have changed them on the toilet floor!!

I think YABU. He may not have been able to wait and you have no idea whether he was disabled at all. I understand how hard it is but it's not like your baby still needed to go and there are other options. Do you have a little changing mat on you? That's always useful, especially with changing in the car etc. It was also about that age that I started to change DS whilst sitting down over my knee. Very very useful if there isn't any baby changing provision. Even possible with a poo explosion if you do have something to drape over your knee!

I've had to. Absolutely no baby changing and had a little changing mat. He's ok, survived it!

YABU he told you he couldn't wait any longer. I wouldn't expect to get back into a queue of people waiting to use a toilet anyway, not to change a baby who it wouldn't make a difference to waiting an extra 30 seconds, the man could have wet himself in the time it takes to clear up an explosion.
He must have meant it too, imagine saying to a stranger "no sorry I can't wait that long" a bit embarrassing for him I imagine.

I don’t see what the big deal is about changing a baby on the floor of the ladies. I’ve done it before. (On a portable change mat, but don’t most people carry those?) It’s not like they’re face down or anything.

It sounds like it was annoying but in this instance yes i think YABU. You left the queue and there was no real urgency to change your baby. The man may have had Crohn's for instance or could have been about to pee himself!

It's not so much the changing on the floor but I think you need more space and your own sink and bin in easy reach for a poo explosion.
