To not dye my hair

I am 33 next week. I have midlength brunette hair but have in recent years gained grey 'wings' (think sopranos) underneath which are really really visible when I pin my hair back. It seems to be getting worse faster now.

I've never been overly bothered but do get comments from friends and family occasionally.

Grey hair can be beautiful. Do what YOU want, and you will shine through anyway!

Of course yanbu! Do whatever you want. It’s your hair. And I agree, grey hair is lovely, especially on a young face. I bet you look fab.

If you’re happy to, embrace it! There’s nothing wrong with grey (silver!) hairs. It’s just another colour. I really don’t understand the obsession over not having grey hair.

I am dark brunette with white hair coming through all over, my dh, dm and kids are fascinated by the fact that I quite like it and have no intention of dying it!

My DM has never died her hair, now aged 70 she has jet black hair with lots of silvery streaks and it looks lovely. Do what you feel happy with OP.

If you're bothered about it when you pin your hair back, invest in some brown mascara and just go over the sides, it's a nonperminant solution for days when you're wanting a bit of camouflage.

If you're happy with it then leave it. I dye my hair to cover the grey and it's a massive pain in the arse because with dark hair you need to do it every two weeks to keep on top of the roots. I wish I hadn't started but I can't face the year or so it would take to grow the roots out.

Personally I think dyeing over greys is something my mum's generation did. None of my current friend group dye their hair (unless it's highlights or mental colours). We're all late 20s/early to mid thirties.

Of course if you want to you should. It's just hair.

@gamerwidow

Could you dye it grey? Then you could grow it out without the roots.

Disclaimer: I am not a hairdresser... don’t even have very good hair myself...

If you want some inspiration there are some communities on Instagram who flaunt silver/grey hair, look at the hashtags - it’s a real mix of ages #silversisters

There are a couple of Facebook pages going gracefully Grey being one, all the women in that look fantastic with grey hair. It’s only hair if you don’t like it you can change it.

Ivreyine out at age 38. I'm 80% grey/white with drowned-mouse-brown underlights Grin

Like a pp I got bored of dying every two weeks: seeing roots, remembering to buy dye, finding the time to do it, ruining towels dying my face!

It actually looks ash blonde, weirdly, and I have a good cut every 6-8 weeks. I got to an age of 'aww bollocks to this' and stopped dying. This may be your moment, it may not. It may never come. But your hair does sound AWESOME!

Embrace the silver highlights! You've earned them Grin

Seriously, silver streaks are fab. I can't wait til mine become dominant as they're much more fun than the dull mouse of the rest of it.

I dyed my hair for years, but it's very dark. I didn't have a problem with grey, but hated the inbetween stage. As soon as the silver hair dye came out, I stripped the color, dyed it silver and that was that. I was 37 I think, possibly 36. My hair is totally silver, and it's fine. I can wear heavier colored make up, and funky colored glasses. I am happy with it. Dying is such a faff. If you want to, go for it. Just find a conditioner that works, because grey hair is much more coarse than colored hair, but loads of conditioner and a good cut is all you need. :)

Personally I find silver streaks attractive on men and women! There’s no need to dye it if you don’t want to.

Also to those who comment on it - it is fair to reply that grey/silver hair is currently very fashionable - a lot of young women are dying theirs that way.

Honestly though it’s a bit mean spirited that anybody question you about it, maybe insecurity within themselves if they dye their hair and you don’t.

I am grey. I don't dye it to hide the grey, I dye it because I like the colour (white blonde) and I sometimes put blue or purple or pink temporary colours in streaks on it. For me it's the fun factor, and I sometimes let it grow out before going white blonde again.

No I’d need to bleach out all the hair dye and then dye it grey to do that and it would fry my hair. Also to match into the roots it needs to be dark brown with white highlights and bleaching and dyeing won’t create that effect.

I wouldn't even consider dyeing my hair - I've got other things I'd much prefer to spend my money on!

Going grey is the height of style right now, and I’m thinking of going grey too. Even young people are dying their hair grey these days. I follow Going Gorgeously Grey on Facebook and some of their hairstyles are absolutely stunning.

I do dye my brunette hair as I don't wish to be grey. I look fat, old and frumpy as it is and my shiny, healthy hair is all I have left! People are always commenting on it. I'm not giving in yet! But, I agree with PPs, it's your choice!
