AIBU?

To think there should be more healthy snacks in the supermarket

I have two teenage sons who eat for England at the moment as they are both shooting up. They graze in-between meals as they are always hungry.

I'm finding it increasingly hard to find nutritious filling snacks to bulk out their lunch box. Supermarkets are filled with processed meat, cheese straws, crisps, sweet cereal bars etc etc. They only get a 45 minute lunch so it needs to be quick and easy.

Then we don't eat usually till 6:30 so they are starving after school. Again filling nutritious snacks are needed.

They do have toast or crackers sometimes but seem to crave unhealthy food.

Any ideas?

Snacks are basically unhealthy.

They need sandwiches, fruit, cheese, full fat yoghurts, nuts. Stuff with protein and fat in it, as well as carbs. But also, teenage boys who are growing like that can basically eat anything and it'll be fine. I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks they do have sandwiches and fruit but because they often eat in a corridor etc things like yoghurts and pasta salads are tricky. I just need a few extras to bulk things out. I can't make myself as my daughter is a coeliac and I found it hard to avoid cross-contamination if I bake.

How about just giving them more sandwiches? Surely if you someone is in need of more food, the easiest answer is to increase the portions of what is already being provided as opposed to introduce an entirely new food group?

And 45 minutes is plenty of time for lunch! They are teenagers and not toddlers, and should be perfectly capable of filling up in 45 minutes.

How did teenagers of the days gone by when 'snacks' did not exist as a concept cope and not die of starvation?

Supermarkets are full of healthy snacks, and the ingredients to make your own.
I don't get your gripe.

I also think there's LOADS of healthy snacks in supermarkets? I don't understand why you think there's only junk food? Confused I'd say there's literally an abundance of healthy snacks to choose from!
