WIBU at the self service checkout?

Usual name changed as I will rant about this in RL.

DD and I were in our newly refurbished local CO-OP today and they have just installed self service tills as well as the manned tills. There was only one shop assistant behind the counter and 3 empty self service tills so we opted for a self service one.
It didn't recognise our first item and was repeating "please wait for an assistant". The staff member who had been manning the counter till had by now come to help the gentleman next to us so we stood waiting as she showed him how to work it. She then went back behind the counter to serve without acknowledging us even though our till was flashing and 'speaking' and despite me saying "excuse me" as she turned to walk away.
I lifted our shopping to the next till and started again at which point the assistant called out loudly "You can't move tills once you've started" so I replied that we had been stood for a while, she hadn't helped me after helping another customer and I couldn't wait any longer (until she'd finished serving the queue that had suddenly appeared at the counter) and she replied that she was only showing him how it works? (I now think maybe she didn't have the authority to clear the problem with my till but she never said anything and she was the only staff member around the till area).
Then the same item of shopping wasn't recognised by the new till. Blush
At this point, another member of staff appeared and she shouted to him that he'd have to clear the till we were originally on because "That woman moved till after she started!". Second member of staff came to sort our till (as it was flashing and shouting) and I did apologise that he now had to clear till one as well but he just smiled and walked off without even looking at it so I don't think he listened.
I am not happy at being told off in front of several shoppers when the first staff member could have helped me, or said she couldn't clear it but someone else would be along soon. DD is mortified and thinks I was embarrassing and that I should have just waited patiently even though we were completely ignored.
I have shopped here every week for the last year and this lady has nearly always served me and we've had a chat on a few occasions. I now don't want to go back and DD is completely refusing to go there ever again.
WIBU?

Oh god I would have moved as well.

In fact I was once halfway through self service at Morrison's and gave up. Scooped it all back in the trolley and went to a manned till and left the bloody thing beeping. No member of staff to be seen to help.

Co op self service tolls don’t work ! It’s taken a year to get the knack of them and to be fair I can’t do them- my 10 year old has mastered them.

Youre not alone op. We have a coop near us and the self service are awful, the shop assistants always ignore use aswell! the ones near us arent manned at all, you have to try to get their attention when they are behind the till serving others so usually ignore us.

Wow. I'd have asked to see the manager, that's disgraceful.

I Abandoned a self service til and went to a manned one on Saturday. They are supposed to be convenient after all. Not U.

Ha I do this all the time at co-op. The self serve tils are a nightmare and I wreck about 3 before giving up and going to the cig counter!

Self service tills are the work of the devil. And they’re robbing people of jobs. I refuse to use them.

The co-op self service tills bug the living hell out of me. Every single time without fail this happens to me, there is something not right with them.

Don’t worry OP you didn’t do anything wrong.

I love self service, just not the coop ones 😂

Yep I've done the exact same in co op more than once. If that's as embarrassing as you get then your dd is doing well!

The poor sales assistant has to now manage 4 tills (the counter one + 3 self service) on her own. One person doing 4 people's job. She was probably well fed up. Maybe she didn't handle it very well but you were probably the 251th customer to have problems with the self service and she most likely just wanted to go home and dream of having a nicer job like sewer cleaner or the person who collects all the poo at the zoo.

Usually if a person is manning a till they are not supposed to leave it unattended, so she probably should not have left her till to help the other person on the self service till. To have sorted you out as well would have more than likely meant she would have been in trouble as a queue forming at her till would have brought attention to the till, then other members of staff would have noticed she had left it unattended. This might be why she didn't help you.

Also, to show someone how to use the self service she would not have had to use her code to clear anything etc but sorting your problem might have needed her code. If she was still logged on at her till and tried using her code at your self service it would have been logged on the system she was at two tills at the same time. Chances are this would have been spotted by a manager or flagged up automatically by the system, therefore causing her to possibly be reprimanded. Using her code at your till might have automatically logged her off her till too and it would have been realised she was not there when someone was checking who was on which till at some point later.

She was more than likely in the wrong to have left her till and I reckon she realised she would be in trouble if she helped you so tried to highlight to the other staff member she was on the till and had nothing to do with your problem/wasn't available to help you.

But she shouldn't have been so downright rude. Unprofessional and totally uncalled for.

I don't ever use self service tills. If we all boycott them they will have to get rid of them.

Co op self service tills are the worst. I hate using the one in my local co op. There was a huge queque one eveing last week and the cashier was telling people who were using cards to use the self service which everyone was ignoring.

Thank you to all those who think IWNU. I am always really polite and I didn't make a fuss about being ignored. I just quietly moved till.

MyKingdomForBrie , tbf I suspect we are entering the era of DD being embarrassed by my very existence. Sad

bookmum08 , I can sympathise with her having too much to do now but I don't think she should have taken it out on a customer.

DeathyMcDeathStarFace, I did think (when she said she was only showing the man how to use it) that this was probably not her area of responsibility, so I needed to wait for someone else, but she only had to say that before going back behind the counter.

I'm curious why you used the self-service tills when the manned till was empty. Perhaps as you are a regular customer she felt a bit snubbed.

Not saying she was right to, but it must be a bit embarrassing when you are standing there doing nothing and someone walks right past you.

Sorry, I misread. I thought you said her till was empty. Please just ignore me.

I love self service tills. I can do my shop without having to socially interact or even make eye contact. But I will just chuck stuff if it doesn’t scan correctly, or even shift the whole lot to another till and start over. I don’t have time to hang around for someone to be arsed to fix a beeping till, they always take far too long and often there’s nobody to be seen.

I’ve swapped tills plenty of times when they’ve thrown a wobbly and I haven’t time or patience to wait for a staff member. If they’re going to introduce systems like this then they need to accept that people will use them “to their convenience”

Nothing is unreasonable when it comes to self-service tills.

I actually do like them when I only have a few uncomplicated items to buy.

But I don't see why I should queue for one. If I have to queue, I want to use a manned till.

And I hate the fact that most of them won't let you put the items in your bag as you go and you have to load them all at the end, it's just a waste of time. Also what's with Sainsburys changing theirs so a big red exclamation mark comes on the screen if you don't put the item on the scale within less than half a second?
