To be a scruncher

So, DH came home this week with a tale about how a colleague of his had to call out a plumber for a massive blockage. Allegedly, the plumber said it was because someone (in this case, colleagues wife) had scrunched loo roll and it had caused the blockage.

Dh then said we must always fold rather than scrunch our loo roll. I then said I am a scruncher and he gave me a look as if I were drowning kittens. Then he started asking me my average sheet usage at which point I decided that the conversation was heading south and told him to not be so daft.

Surely scrunching doesn't block drains? I would say I'm less scruncher tbh and more epically lazy folder.

Thoughts?

😂.
What ? But doesn't it all soften up when it gets wet anyway? Regardless of wether it's a scrunch, a fold or an origami swan ??

This being MN, I expect to discover some amazing ways to wipe now Grin.

I’ve never understood scrunching. It’s just so weird! Why would anyone think scrunching was the best way to wipe? Confused

What a load of shit! Grin

The way you fold or scrunch or screw up your loo roll makes naff-all difference to how it flushes, or whether it blocks the drain!

It's people chucking crap down the drain, like cooking fat/lard, and baby wipes, and nappies and suchlike that causes blockages. Maybe EXCESSIVE amounts of loo roll may cause a blockage, but the way you screw up your loo roll is irrelevant.

See, I would have thought that surely if you scrunch the same amount of loo roll than you fold, it would break down the same. Dh has said no and he is an engineer so he "knows" things like this. Feel like he is grabbing at loo rolls to save face.

Scrunching gives you a thicker wodge to wipe with. Folding means the paper is thinner and your fingers are more likely to tear through it. If you fold YABVU and risking poopy fingers!

Since he presumably doesn't come in to check, just say you have seen the light, are totally reformed and will henceforth iron sharp creases into your loo roll. Then continue as you are.

I just don't understand scrunching, how can you get a properly clean backside with scrunched up loo roll?

Tell DH you've been scrunching for years and your toilet hasn't blocked.

Damntheman · 01/04/2019 09:50

You CAN block a drain from trying to flush too much toilet paper at once. But too much toilet paper would be like.. half a roll, so I doubt even a scruncher could use that much in one go!

That said, scrunching is odd, aren't you more likely to get your fingers somewhere you don't want them if you scrunch? The unpredictability of where the paper is and isn't would really bother me!

Get two tubs. Fill with water.

Grab the same number of sheets of paper, fold one and scrunch the other. Put one in each tub and see if they react differently in the water.

😂😂😂

Sorry, he’ll need to provide a detailed diagram to explain his findings.

My plumber said buy cheap loo roll as it's thin. The posh quilty stuff blocks drains.

That said, Lidl's cheap stuff has about four sheets to a roll, so there's never any danger that will happen...

After having this conversation with friends and realising this was a thing I discovered DH and DD are scrunchers Shock

I used to scrunch, but now I fold. Not sure why I changed.

You know who the real weirdos are? People who stand up to wipe instead of staying seated and just leaning... Hmm

My plumber said buy cheap loo roll as it's thin. The posh quilty stuff blocks drains

We found this out the hard way by holidaying in Spain. We buy our toilet roll in Costco and used to chuck a couple of rolls in the suitcase when we went on holiday because most of the stuff in the supermarket near to the apartment block we stayed in was thin rubbishy stuff and we didn't see the point in buying toilet roll on holiday when we had a load of it at home, and space in the suitcase.

Of course there is a reason why the toilet roll in the Spanish supermarket is the thin rubbishy stuff....

But I agree with PPs who say that I don't understand how you can wipe effectively with scrunched toilet paper.

@ILoveMaxiBondi I've seen him do it 🙈 I just don't understand it, it makes no sense so I guess that's why it grates on me. It's just so wrong 😬

I've never really thought about it but I think I'm a wiper not a scruncher.

How do people stand up to wipe though? Surely the only time you stand up to wipe is if its ring of fire time Confused
Otherwise your not really clean?
