AIBU?

Travelling with friends but only I got upgraded on the flight

I was travelling with four other friends. On checking in, I was offered a free flight upgrade. I asked whether my friends would too, but no just me as I have status with the airline. I accepted it, leaving my four friends in the back of the plane (12hr flight).

Was I unreasonable?

My one friend said it was bit selfish, but the others said balls to it, you got it for free, enjoy yourself.

No of course you weren't being unreasonable, take what comes your way.

Both your friends were correct. And YANBU. You being unselfish in this instance would not have changed your friends being stuck at the back of the plane. So why not?

I would definitely tell you to upgrade and enjoy

I have status with the airline. why is that ?

Theu should be happy for you

I wouldn't.

It says to me you're more concerned with a better seat than the company of your friends.

I’d take the upgrade it’s a 12 hour flight!!

I wouldn’t have been annoyed at you and would have wanted you to go and enjoy it.

People that have a problem with things like this, in my experience, tend to be the first to say yes without hesitation or thought for others when the shoe is on the other foot. It’s only a problem when they aren’t the “chosen one”.

On a short flight, I'd have stuck it out with my friends. I'd be less inclined to be so principled if it were a long haul flight

Huh? She will be a frequent flyer.

I'd definitely have upgraded! 12 hours is long. Did it leave your friends with an empty seat beside them?

Yanbu, I bet if they got upgraded they would of took it, I'd be chuffed for you

I'd go for it personally, and if my friend was one who got the upgrade - I'd tell her to go for it too!

Yanbu, I would think lucky you! Wouldn't be angry or think it's selfish, if you get it go enjoy it.

Yanbu
Did you leave an empty seat they could enjoy the extra room instead

Who booked the flights? Was it you? Did you book with this airline, knowing you'd might be stretching your legs out and living the high life and they'd be going cattle class?

That's the only set up in which I'd be giving you the evil eye over this.

I'd've been proper jell, but I definitely wouldn't have expected you to decline it and ride cattle class just on principle. If it had been me upgraded though I might have offered my friends an hour or two in the comfy seat at some point though, for a fortifying nap or just a stretch.

YANBU. If I was your friend I would definitely have been quietly jealous you got an upgrade. But I would also have thought you mad for not taking it.

Report
Dramatical · 29/03/2019 12:25

I wouldn't have taken it. You were travelling together.

It’s not selfish if it is causing no detriment to anyone else.

If it had been two of you, and upgrading would have left your friend on her own for 12 hours, that would have been a bit selfish.

As it was, not at all.

I had the reverse happen once. One of our friends had checked in online (about 15 years ago this was when it was new and exciting) which meant he didn't have to queue. He buggered off having first crowed a bit about how clever he'd been and how stupid we were and how he had his seat reserved and we'd get terrible seats next to strangers. We checked in at the desk and got upgraded to a pair of seats next to each other in Premium Economy. HELL YES WE TOOK IT. And then sent him a few texts before phones went off about how comfy our disorganised last minute seats were Grin

Oh my at not taking it. Surely you all have a laugh, they say you’re jammy as hell then you skip off smiling at your luck

Even if it’s just two if you travelling alone is no hardship, she’d get the extra space

I'd have stayed with my friend as I regard the flight as part of the holiday but I don't think it's worth falling out over.

Unless I was travelling with my lovely husband I'd have upgraded too. Twelve hours of comfort.
