River island sizing

Does anyone find that river island jeans come up small? Or is this me just hoping confused

I'm usually a size 12 and I ventured into river island for the first time to buy jeans. Tried on the mom jeans and I couldn't fasten them up.
I wondering if it's me that's gained a few pounds, or if they are small to size?
I've got a few different brands at home which are all 12s and no issue. Come you through some true to size shops at me? I find new look, very and m&s really good for jeans.

Please help before I go on an eternal crash diet.

SummersB Sun 24-Mar-19 14:22:24

River island sizing is absolutely tiny!

TeaForTheWin Sun 24-Mar-19 14:26:56

Dunno about jeans but some of there other products are a little on the small side, a dress and a playsuit thing I remember. Nothing compared to topshop though. I got down to seven stone 9lbs (size 8, 5ft 1) when I was on my diet last year, popped into the store thinking i'd treat myself to some new gladraggs, only to realise that the majority of their skirts and shorts - I wouldn't have been able to get one ass cheek into xD

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 14:38:49

Makes you feel rubbish doesn't it? Don't what's worse, this or vanity sizing

kaytee87 Sun 24-Mar-19 14:40:09

Gap jeans are much better than river island.

HalfBloodPrincess Sun 24-Mar-19 14:41:36

I’ve always found they come up big. I’m usually a 14 top but in RI I fit a 12.
Never bought jeans from there though.

SinglePringle Sun 24-Mar-19 14:42:31

I genuinely never have any issue between the fashion stores. I’m a 12 and am a 12 in Top Shop, Zara (or Medium), River Island etc. I go down to a 10-12 in M&S (but only really buy cami vests, pj bottoms and knickers in there). I’m 49, 5’8.

DiscoDown Sun 24-Mar-19 14:44:47

I find River Island sizes a bit random, had to size up 2 sizes for a particular top, then next time I assumed I'd need the same sized up size and it was huge. I try everything on now.

Dueinnov19 Sun 24-Mar-19 14:44:54

Its always worth trying a few of the same size as no two are ever cut or sewn the same.

Find that with next all the time

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 14:50:38

I should have tried two pairs and seen if I noticed any difference. I won't lie, I'm quite pear shaped a size 10 up top sometimes an 8 and always a 12 on the lower half. I'm 5'6 and 10.7 stone so maybe I've gained a few blush

whiteteeth04 Sun 24-Mar-19 15:02:21

I think they are tight but they stretch quickly. I'm usually a 6, river island 6 jeans are so tight I can barely breathe the first time I wear them but after a few hours loosen up fine.

M and S sizes are huge though. I fit in size 8 there although am at least a 10 probably 12 elsewhere. Don't let it bother you just buy a 14 if that's what fits!

MyElbowIsItchy Sun 24-Mar-19 15:10:51

I think their sizing has definitely changed. I’m normally an 8 in their jeans, regardless of the style. Now I can’t fit into the size 8s at all. I normally try on 3/4 pairs to get the proper leg length etc but no 8s were suitable, so had to go up to size 10 instead. My weight has not changed since I last bought a pair.

Shelbybear Sun 24-Mar-19 15:11:53

I recently tried a pair on from there and they were my usual size, so I didn't find they come up small. Maybe that particular style is small made though

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 15:15:52

It wasn't just tight, couldn't even do the button up. Surprised I'm in that size how? blush

nometal Sun 24-Mar-19 15:16:15

The thing I noticed when accompanying my wife shopping in the local River Island is that they have one of those fairground mirrors on the wall in the changing room that made even me look like an emaciated catwalk model.

Next had one too.

littlebillie Sun 24-Mar-19 15:17:25

I picked up a top in George and it was two sizes smaller - wow they are into vanity sizing

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 15:19:36

nometal grin

GG20 Sun 24-Mar-19 15:22:13

Absolutely - I'm a "real" size 12 and buy an 8 in the likes of M&S or Next - wouldn't say M&S are representative of proper sizes at all. RI are more true to size.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 15:22:42

My measurements are 34, 28 and 38. According to a size converter should be a 10 on top and 12 on bottom. Not sure how reliable that is!

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 15:24:45

Shame, GG20 I thought I was a 'real' 12 too

nometal Sun 24-Mar-19 17:07:49

Mrs nometal's RI jeans are 6. On a par with her other jeans and trousers. Next and M&S aren't small enough, despite having the same size label.

She is 5'6" 8st 7lbs (ish). 24/25" waist. Also high muscle mass.

cardibach Sun 24-Mar-19 17:18:34

GG20 what do you mean by a ‘real’ size 12? There is no industry standard, that’s why there’s an issue between stores...

polkadotpixie Sun 24-Mar-19 17:33:13

@Kennehora I'm 5'3, weigh 10.7 and am also a pear shaped 10 on top and 12 on the bottom. It depends on your shape as well as your weight

I think that was a bit rude to the OP tbh!

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 17:36:01

I've worked really hard to keep my weight off I've gone from 16st to 10.7

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 17:37:20

I think I look average.

I find RI sizes on the bigger side compared to topshop or zara but smaller than next or gap.

kaytee87 Sun 24-Mar-19 20:59:38

@Kennehora op said she was a size 12 confused

Zebraantelopegiraffe Sun 24-Mar-19 21:01:16

So you are normally a size 6-8 and op is normally a 12..... yeah same thing

Zebraantelopegiraffe Sun 24-Mar-19 21:01:44

And you look very lovely in that picture OP

XiCi Sun 24-Mar-19 21:18:02

Yes kennehora you were rude and you know it. There is always one person on these threads that comes on to exclaim that a person couldn't possibly be that weight and size. Always someone getting a sly dig in. Well if you want to play that game there's no way anyone that's 9 stone 3 is a size 6 in any store smile

tinkerbellla Sun 24-Mar-19 21:22:27

I'm 10.7lbs, 5ft 5 and was wearing size 10 RI trousers yesterday but always a 12 in top shop jeans, although the bum gets saggy. It just depends on your individual body shape. Your figure looks fab by the way 🙌x

lostfrequencies Sun 24-Mar-19 21:32:10

Kennehora -yawn-

Coffeeisnecessary Sun 24-Mar-19 21:44:09

I'm the same height as you op and a little bit heavier, more like 10st 12lb and I am mostly a 10, normally a 12 on top half though. I have some RI jeans in a 14, they are a not big in the waist but tight on the legs.Everyone carries weight differently and has different muscle mass etc. Your photo looks fab.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 21:49:57

Sorry if I wasn't clear and caused confusion. I mentioned I was a size 10 on top mostly and can fit into some size 8s. This is on top only as I'm pear shaped and have a small waist and an A cup. I'm a 12 on the bottom half.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 21:51:33

The only reason I posted that picture was to show that everyone is different and even though I am 10.7 stone I feel you could easily pin point me as an average size 12 or whatever average means. I hold weight differently, so my weight goes to my thighs and bum

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 21:54:50

Previous weight has alot to do with it as I felt like I had to justify my size when I've worked so damn hard to be told No, you're not and again you looked at my picture and said nope you're not that size. I appreciate you may not have intended to be unkind, but it came across that way. I'll repeat it again, I'm a size 10 in tops can fit into 8 depending on cut. However, majority is a 12.

talktoo Sun 24-Mar-19 22:14:16

Kennehora yep. You are rude. And can't read. The OP clearly stated that she is a 10 top, sometimes an 8 and always a 12 on the bottom. You've said you are normally a 6-8 but an 8-10 in RI. So you are a completely different size to the OP but you decided that she couldn't possibly be the same size as you as she is heavier. So you are a 6-8 and she is a 12 on the bottom and you can't get your head around that. Rude.

GoGoGadgetGin Sun 24-Mar-19 22:19:25

Kennehora, you remind me of an acquaintance who always always has t bring into any conversation how 'tiny' she is and always has to be the thinnest, smallest in some oddly 'self depreciation' attention seeking way.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:20:13

But thanks for saying I don't look like a size 12. I feel utterly shit now.

DareDevil223 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:24:22

You look slim and absolutely lovely and congratulations on the fantastic weight loss.

Any thread on MN about size or weight is a magnet for those who have to be slimmer than everyone else and make themselves feel better at the expense of others. Take no notice.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:24:40

Thank you for your apology. I've had 2 dc both c-sec, mid 30s and a life time of bad eating to boot. I don't want to feel bad about my body and I appreciate you didn't intent for that to come across.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:26:30

I don't care about the pictures! They motivate me when I look back to how i was. I don't look at myself and class myself as heavy. Yes, I've got tons to go but I'm happy with how I am.

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:27:26

Yes I thought that was what the thread was about also! It just happened to turn into this.

Sunkist please don't think there is anything wrong with you, you look very healthy and have a great body! BMI is shite, I would have to be 6st 11 apparently before I would be underweight for the BMI, I once due to ill health dropped to 7st 5, l looked horrific.

Kennehora but your surprise at the OPs stats is just weird. She is heavier than you and larger than you. So what is the freaking problem you have in accepting the stats????? You are a 6-8 on the bottom and she is a 12. What in God's name makes that confusing for you? You are an 8-10 in RI and she is not fitting a 12 so is presumably a 14 in RI. Again, how does that make her stats weird for you. It's all very logical.

TDMN Sun 24-Mar-19 22:36:14

OP I looked at your photos and thought bloody hell wish I had that figure then went back and discovered we are same height/weight just reversed on sizes - I am 12 on top and 10 on bottom grin i've never got on with River Island jeans (and dont get me started on Topshop - why dont any of their tops have room for anything over a C cup??? Or any stretch in them??) However I have got on well with Dorothy Perkins in the past and also Uniglo if you can get your head around their sizing smile

nanananightfevernightfeeever Sun 24-Mar-19 22:39:00

It really annoys me the different sizing in shops - I can never order online as invariably they won't fit!!

I'm 5'5, 49kg and anywhere from a 6, 8 or 10 (or 2xXS, XS, S in good old Primarni!)

Should be universal sizing as law! (ok, maybe a bit OTT but so frustrating) ha

GoGoGadgetGin Sun 24-Mar-19 22:39:47

You do sun am the same as you except only 1 DC via rapid crash csect so a lovely horrible pouch courtesy of scarring - allowed DC and l to both survive so grateful!

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:40:18

tdmn I've also heard Dorothy Perkins are great sizewise but never tried personally. In terms of cup size I'm jealous! I'm an A and I get gaping space where breasts should be grin

You're right I do focus to much on a size label and maybe I shouldn't care so much. I've worked so damn hard to get to a majority 12 and today I feel huge and i shouldn't have felt that way

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 22:43:46

Don't get me started on Primark nanan

GoGoGadgetGin Sun 24-Mar-19 22:44:26

Kenn sizing is such an odd thing isn't it, l should probably apologize to you as clearly my annoyance at size judgy friend came a-rearing!

nometal Sun 24-Mar-19 22:51:19

"Should be universal sizing as law! (ok, maybe a bit OTT but so frustrating)"

Perhaps the military system would be better. Trousers have three measurements: waist, bum and leg length...

How have you got "tons to go"? Genuinely don't see it confused

Duster12 Sun 24-Mar-19 23:00:03

I'm a 6 and RI are huge sized, as in falling down around my ankles. Definite vanity sizing going on there.

TacoFlavouredKisses Sun 24-Mar-19 23:01:59

I'm so glad it's not just me - I'm a Topshop 10, M&S 8, H&M 8 (actually have a pair of 6s from H&M now too after their size adjustment!) - and tried on three pairs of RI jeans in a 10 last week (Amelie, Harper and Mollie) and really struggled to even get them up blush

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 23:04:41

I think I'll have to go with whatever fits, fits! I focus too much on a number. Also, I have around 7-10 lbs to go, I tend to fluctuate here and there

Sunkist12 Sun 24-Mar-19 23:05:44

taco have you tried new look Yasmin Jean? Very similar to Molly, basically live in them

AllTheJingleLadies Sun 24-Mar-19 23:08:44

You have a lovely figure.
I'm surprised about your comments as I just found my perfect fit size 12 jeans in RI, and I am 5'7" and a little over 11st. I am in proportion (though my legs are thick) and you look like you are too. The style is called Amelie - perhaps try them? Maybe the pair you tried on were mis-labelled.
I usually find s12 fits in most places, H&M is the only one which is hit & miss

Sunkist12 Mon 25-Mar-19 10:29:34

I'll take a look at those, thank you.

Fimat Mon 25-Mar-19 10:38:02

Definitely agree that you have to try on a few pairs. Bought a pair of black mollie jeans from river island, size 10. Wore them loads and they faded songut another pair. Didn’t try them on and they were ridiculously tight on me and I hadn’t gained weight and the other pair fitted perfectly even after being washed etc. So annoying.

sushisuperstar Mon 25-Mar-19 19:43:56

This is why I always have to try stuff on in the shop or buy two sizes online. It's bloody annoying. But hey ho. It would be wonderful to have universal sizing but of course all bodies are made differently. There really is no point in comparing your make up to someone else's IMO as it's not as clear cut as that.
