I'm watching a documentary and everyone in it speaks with vocal fry probably 85/90% of the time and it's so moronic. Why why is this a thing?

What's that?

I don't think I know anyone who speaks that way irl. It seems to me to be an Americanism, what is the documentary on? Seems more reality TV style than documentary to me

Once you've noticed you can never stop noticing it. I watched Married at First Sight, USA, and the women on there did it continually. It sets my teeth on edge like fingernails down a blackboard. Angry

DD has started doing it too now. FFS.

What is it?

Agree. It just sounds so lazy and apathetic.

It does seem to currently be more a thing in America rather than England, thankfully.

What on earth is Vocal Fry?

It’s where your voice goes croaky, particularly at the end of a sentence. The bloke from This American Life podcast does it a lot.

Croaky tail off at the end of a sentence

Don’t think I’ve ever noticed it. Sounds like it would sound like a teenager who’s just got out of bed!

Oh I hate it. I'm an American and I've been here over 20 years. And what I absolutely can't stand is how 'London' the vocal fry thing is among young women in their 20s. It's just awful.
To me, the vocal fry represents the 80s valley girls of Southern California. We openly mocked this way of speaking. I haven't lived in the States for so long, so I don't know if it's more of a thing there but certainly here in London, it's a thing. It's so horrible.
It's just so "I don't give a fuck and I'm sooo bored and lazy."
It's all sorts of awful.

I clicked on this thinking it was an auto correct for Stephen Fry.
Never heard of it, or heard anyone speak like it.

Yes very annoying and increasingly common in the county I live in, which interestingly is the subject of a reality TV show.

For those of you not sure, Kim Kardashian is made up of approximately 80% vocal fry

Report
AdvancedAvoider · 23/03/2019 14:40

My teenage son does it. I'm hoping he's going to grow out if it naturally because I'm sick to the back teeth of requesting he stops doing it.

Awful. All the kardashians esp Kim, talk like that.

Like many things wrong with this world, I blame the kardashians 🤣

Oh. My. Good. Lord. I don’t know how to put video links in but I’ve just watched a YouTube vid called something like one minute of Kim Kardashian Vocal Fry.

I nearly threw my phone across the kitchen. Thought that woman couldn’t get any more annoying. I was wrong.

These two do it all the time and www.facebook.com/Channel4/videos/10155250465617330/
You can hear it at the end of their sentences.

I know someone at school who does it - one of my friends is hugely irritated by it!

The Kardashians... bread, circuses, and vocal fry. It's abhorrent what they've inflicted upon society.

Never heard this expression before, but I HAVE heard people doing it. Very annoying. Kim K is the worst offender!

The spoof Eugenie and Bea from the Windsors makes me laugh though, coz it's just funny and over exaggerated impressions.
