AIBU: Gym changing

For a variety of reasons I don’t like getting changed in public. I go straight from work to the gym and so get changed once I’m there. The gym has no cubicles other than toilets so nip in and quickly change. There is never a queue waiting when I’m done, so me being in there (as far as I’m concerned) does no harm. The gym has now put a sign up to say customers must not change in the toilets and if private facilities are required to use the disabled changing room located elsewhere in the gym.

I don’t really want to use the disabled facilities as there are disabled customers and I’d be taking up their only cublicle. Should I do as directed by the signage and just use the disabled? Or do what I’ve always done but flaunt the new “rule”? Getting changed at work isn’t an option as I have no where to store kit and can’t park near work so would have an extra half an hour to get my kit picked up and changed, returned to the car to head to the gym: by which point I’d be too late for picking up dc.

You’re the customer. If there’s more than one toilet and no queue I can’t see its a big issue.

Yes, three toilets in total.

I would ask them why they have instituted the rule. It may be that it's mainly directed to people using it at a particularly busy time, or when school groups are in or something. And if not, ask them why it matters when there's no one waiting to use them.

I would use the disabled changing room, and if it cases an issue for disabled customers raise it each and every time in the hope that they then put cubicles in the open changing room.

By doing that you're the right side of the rule and have a stronger position if there are space availability issues than if you were braking the rule and changing in the loos.

I totally understand your reluctance to use the disabled facilities - I have an invisible disability and I feel very awkward using the disabled loo on the occasions I need to.

I’d just use the toilet as you have been

Disfordarkchocolate Fri 22-Mar-19 19:46:23

I'd use the toilet and keep away from the disabled area. Could you get changed before you leave work?

BigChocFrenzy Fri 22-Mar-19 19:48:42

Please do NOT use the disabled facilities unless you have a disability

Flaunt the rules. You're not doing anything illegal in the loos, there are no queues, and why shouldn't you get changed in privacy?

Stuff the rules

Great, that’s fairly unanimous. I shall continue to do as I am. Should anyone query it I think I’ll either point out I’m not disabled and do no harm - or cop out embarrassed and claim to not be able to read.

Yes carry on as you are. I can't believe your gym doesn't have cubicles, there should be at least two. I always use them!

YANBU, but the word you're looking for is flout

You flout a rule
You flaunt your assets.

No cubicles at my gym, just a large communal changing area although the showers are in cubicles thankfully!
