To blame everyone else for this mess?

So about two years ago my boss messed everything up royally and decided to quit. A few of us decided to go for his job and in the end I got the position (technically on a default but never mind).
Anyway I needed to reunite my team. There are some very tricky characters in it, some who can have some very extreme views. I took lots of advice from my advisors and tried to work with those who had extreme views even though they were making impossible demands - but if I called them out on it they’d get rid of me and I am the only one sensible enough to hold it all together.
I unfortunately did make a big mistake about eight months in to my position which severely weakened my team.
My job requires a lot of negotiation which I accept isn’t my strong point. I have to negotiate with a very large organisation who weren’t always the easiest to deal with.
Anyway, roll on to this autumn and I finally have a plan in place for a very difficult decision that was made before I was in charge, but that I feel I have to act upon. However my team (and the members of several other teams we work with) have twice refused to accept it! They say I am not listening to them but I’m in charge and they don’t know what they want.
Anyway AIBU to blame them for this mess? My organisation could be in real trouble next week but I don’t think it’s my fault at all. What should I do? Should I resign? Keep going? Any advice gratefully received.

If you are in charge you are unreasonable to blame your team....either deal with the situation or resign if you feel you can’t act with integrity.

The initial fuck up wasn’t yours and you did your best. However when you got into an affair with a different dept you should have known no good would come of it. They hold you to ransom, and you let them away with not not actually doing their own work yet still pay them, in fact you even gave them a pay rise and allowed their dept head to extend this non working holiday for 5 months so yes you should go as you are fucking up left right and centre

Antigonads Thu 21-Mar-19 22:31:26

Yawn.

Theworldisfullofgs Thu 21-Mar-19 22:32:02

Resign. Reading between the lines you've downplayed how terrible a leader you are. You lack insight.

If you were a better leader you would have resigned over a year ago.

I think you are doing all that you can in a rubbish situation and I applaud you for that.
Your dancing however is unforgivable.

RafaIsTheKingOfClay Thu 21-Mar-19 22:35:08

Best thing to do is just to keep bulldozing Ahead with your plan. What could possibly go wrong?

LordNibbler Thu 21-Mar-19 22:35:34

FGS

If the decision was made and twice people voted for it, as it was included as what you would do, then everyone who worked there noted to go ahead, it is about time you just got on with it and said that you promised 127 times on record you would do it, so you will .

Gazelda Thu 21-Mar-19 22:40:50

I think you should hang on for 'constructive dismissal', get a great pay off and then go on lots of walking holidays.

But before you go, could you pop a few ££££ in the welfare fund? And the training budget? And the travel expenses? And the pensioners kitty?

ScarletBitch Thu 21-Mar-19 22:43:54

Is this Teresa May OP?

ScarletBitch Thu 21-Mar-19 22:45:07

You need to please change your grey fleece as well, it's distracting your workforce grin

Chlo1674 Thu 21-Mar-19 22:46:19

I wouldn’t worry. You aren’t any worse than JC and there is no viable opposition so it doesn’t matter how badly you’ve handled things.

Handsoffmysweets Thu 21-Mar-19 22:47:16

I had carbonara for dinner

InsertFunnyUsername Thu 21-Mar-19 22:49:03

I think you should go rogue OP, sack anyone who looks at you funny, dance all you like and wear what you want. Join in with twitter bashing people like your other boss friend.

It couldn't get much worse anyway, so take what you can to make sure your future is strong and stable grin

GinZing Thu 21-Mar-19 22:59:43

Keep going, what’s the worse that could happen.

Yabbers Thu 21-Mar-19 23:02:08

Time to leave Theresa, Mhairi Black for PM!
Oh dear Lord, No.

ALargeGinPlease Thu 21-Mar-19 23:03:32

Why did you take the job in the first place, surely you knew it was going to be a shitshow?
But very poor show to blame your team now, you are at the helm, you should take some responsibility.
Perhaps you could reverse the decision your predessor made???

Lalliella Thu 21-Mar-19 23:12:13

OP you are delusional. You’re the boss, it’s all your fault, you can’t blame anyone else. You pursued your own course regardless of how unpopular it is and what the consequences would be. You mustn’t quit, it’s your responsibility to fix this. You need to let the people decide.
