This is news to me. The official policy is this...

'...on rare occasions where there appears to be a clear need to safeguard the welfare of a Mumsnetter and/or his/her family, it may be necessary to contact relevant authorities'

I am not referencing a specific thread or this will be deleted but I think posters should be aware that this is the case.

SamBaileys Wed 20-Mar-19 18:12:50

Well I didn't know that, so thanks for sharing.

AlpacasAreLlamas Wed 20-Mar-19 18:17:28

Who are the relevant authorities?

PurpleDaisies Wed 20-Mar-19 18:17:59

It definitely includes the police.

sagradafamiliar Wed 20-Mar-19 18:22:50

Yeah I knew that when I signed up and I'm thankful for it. Just my opinion.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking Wed 20-Mar-19 18:24:46

Nothing wrong with that - or are you saying if some one posts they are about to commit suicide and take everyone with them, they should be left alone to do that ?

Im all for capacity to make own decisions, but there is a line to be drawn if it involves the harm of others

Disfordarkchocolate Wed 20-Mar-19 18:25:39

Common and expected practice and I'm glad its in place. There are some very vulnerable people on this site and some idiots who give no thought to how they may upset people too.

Grace212 Wed 20-Mar-19 18:26:23

I thought this was standard for online boards like this.

Yep and I'm fine with it thanks. I would hope that if I was ever so mentally unwell that I wanted to kill myself that someone would stop me.

SeeYouLaterUserData Wed 20-Mar-19 18:28:52

But how? Do people use their real names when she going up these days? confused

sagradafamiliar Wed 20-Mar-19 18:28:53

If someone came on saying they are potentially a family annihilator and were on the brink, I'd like to think something could be done to prevent it.
It's a bit like human rights for me. They apply to everyone. Some people might not agree that criminals should have them but if those people want human rights, then they have to apply to everyone.

McFrostyNuts Wed 20-Mar-19 18:29:07

How would they know who and where you are? IP address? What if your using data and have false details on your profile?

MNHQ explain why on this thread I think

Hi all. We have clear rules around suicidal content, designed with the assistance of the Samaritans, to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Here's the relevant section from our Privacy Policy

If there are compelling safeguarding considerations, we may share your data with public authorities without your permission. We understand 'compelling safeguarding considerations' to mean credible evidence of imminent risk of serious harm, especially to a child or vulnerable person.

X post frostynuts

sagradafamiliar Wed 20-Mar-19 18:30:32

I'm heartened to see these responses after reading all the hoiky-busoms erm...elsewhere.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks Wed 20-Mar-19 18:30:59

Tbh I think whatever MNHQ do is wrong as far as some people are concerned.

MitziK Wed 20-Mar-19 18:32:43

I'm fine with that.

UrsulaPandress Wed 20-Mar-19 18:33:42

They don’t have our address do they?

continuallychargingmyphone Wed 20-Mar-19 18:34:01

I have a huge problem with that.

Where are they getting info about me from?

RiddleyW Wed 20-Mar-19 18:34:06

I was on the sharp end of this once and appreciated the support.

BloodyDisgrace Wed 20-Mar-19 18:34:07

I think it is a good idea.

QueenOfTheTofuTree Wed 20-Mar-19 18:34:18

I was actually wondering myself how they would know where to send the police to. AFAIK your UP address can only be used to give a vague idea of the area you're in but not your exact address.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks Wed 20-Mar-19 18:34:22

Yep knew this and most forums have things like this in place. Why is it a problem?
