AIBU?

To think the world has a big white supremacy problem?

Is anyone actually surprised that this has happened? It is shocking and sickening, but let’s face it, it has been so acceptable for so long to vilify muslims, to abuse muslims, to attack muslims - politicians have made careers out of this. Is it any wonder that yet another white supremacist has murdered muslims and has received praise for doing so by keyboard warriors on various platforms.

I (and most muslims in the West) have been dealing with the aftermath of 9/11 by being held responsible for every terrorist atrocity. Dealing with knee-jerk reactions and responses became the norm for me since then. Every terror attack, grooming ring, extremist preacher became my responsibility to explain, condemn and apologise for. I was asked why muslims don’t put double-page ads in the paper to apologise and condemn. I was told that I shouldn’t be surprised at the hostility towards muslims because the few give everyone a bad name.

So here I am, wondering if those people (all white) who were quick to vilify my religion and me and demanded an apology and explanation for the latest newspaper headline will now explain today’s headlines to me. Will they explain why white people do this? Will they give me a full breakdown of his manifesto, explain each name listed on the white terrorist’s guns, explain the choice of music on the video, explain why he filmed it, explain why he had so much support (white terrorist supported by other whites, therefore all whites must be terrorists) and take out ads in national papers apologising for being white. After all it was a white person who did this and just like all muslims were held accountable, will all whites be held accountable too?

No, that would be ridiculous. Just as any demands for an apology you may have received were ridiculous.

You are upset at being asked to explain yourself for atrocities by Muslims and yet here you are with that quote.

I can assure you that, as a white person, I am sickened, disgusted and upset at the events in Christchurch. In fact I don’t think you’ll find many white British people who would be anything but.

Completely and utterly agree. I'm irate at the constant attacks on who I am and the suggestion that I need to justify or explain the horrific actions of a stranger I have never met. People love to forget the fact that more Muslims have been murdered by ISIS than any other religion, yet we somehow share responsibilityAngry

They will, in the same way they usually do when white people do these things -

White people killing others - mental health problems

Anyone else - terrorist.

...that's why she said it. She was making a point. That it's ridiculous to ask a Muslim to explain an atrocity just because they are also Muslim.

TacoLover nope didn’t get that at all. Just an ironic attack on white people —slow clap—

Also I don’t think there is any disagreement that Christchurch was a terrorist attack.

Bold fail. I meant that @GardenVariety was pointing out the double standard.

People need to gain some reading comprehension ffs. She asked white people to explain this man's actions to point out how ridiculous it is that people do the same to her. She didn't ACTUALLY think other white people would be able to explain it, she's not stupid. She was pointing out how ridiculous it is that people do the same to Muslims.

The world does have a massive white supremacy problem, yes.

And utterly sickening as it was, the white supremacist terrorists of this attack have caused fewer deaths than the persistent insidious white supremacy of the aftermath of colonialism.

It is far easier for people to express horror and sympathy over a sickening attack than it is to look honestly at the ongoing climate of institutional racism at the heart of many western societies.

You see mealy mouthed apologist comments every time there is an “is this racist?” thread on MN.

I agree with you but I fear your post won't garner much support or indeed posters won't actually see the nuanced point you are making. In short: YANBU.

I hope you're prepared for A LOT of defensive answers OP.

I agree with you.

White supremacy is a massive issue and it's far more ingrained/widespread in society than people realise or want to accept. It's not just the preserve of neo nazis and the like.

Anybody who holds an entire, innocent, demographic group responsible for the actions of a few terrorists is completely unreasonable and probably racist themselves.

Im sorry that anybody made you feel like that after instances of Islamist terrorism. Thanks

You know yourself that if you were to do the same after this incident of white power terrorism, you'd be guilty of the same thing. Getting down to the level of the racist idiots never brings anything good.

I feel the same, I'm white (from NZ)

I wasn't surprised by the attack. Endless validation is given to those who believe in 'white genocide' and other similar crap by politicians and the media who use it for their own game.

Then extremists use it as justification for mass murder.

There is a white supremacy problem and the west isn't doing a good enough job of trying to tackle it.

I'm really sorry that people have demanded you explain the actions of others just because you nominally share a religion.

I'm so devastated by what has happened to Muslim communities in chch. I hope this is a never again moment for NZ and I hope that other countries follow suit.

I presume that if whites were committing terrorist attacks on a regular basis in muslim countries then I should imagine “all whites” must be thought of as terrorists by a certain section of the population. That’s the only way to compare I’d have thought.

YANBU at all OP. The world has an enormous white supremacy problem, and it's being denied.

When white attackers commit an atrocity they are called a "lone wolf" or described as unwell or obsessive.

When the fact is that they're murderous racists who see human life as expendable.

White privilege is real, I know I have it and I (hopefully) recognise it and use it to be an ally.

Denying it exists or getting irritated about being lumped in with white supremacists isn't helpful. Because until racism, intolerance and bigotry is challenged, nothing will change.

So it is our job to stand up to it. Because it's fucking wrong.

🙄 If you didn't get what is very clear in the OP's post then that is your problem, she's clearly pointing out the double standard. And if you think there's no disagreement then you are lucky. I've had multiple people already refusing to say it's a terrorist attack. Have you been on Twitter, or newspaper website comment sections? There are many who say it's not a terrorist attack. And actually some who have suggested that it's the fault of Muslim immigration. And funny how pointing out double standards or racism is an attack on all white peopleHmmGod forbid white people are actually attacked for their race like the rest of us🙄
