...what would you do?

Not so much an aibu as a wwyd, but if you would like me to shoehorn in an aibu; aibu to ask the above grin?

I am retraining as an interpreter. While working full time and with a small child. It's hard, I'd love some free time to do it. But it'll be worth it when I can leave my current job!

PurpleDaisies Sat 16-Mar-19 10:15:26

In a weird coincidence, I would train as an interpreter as well!

If loads of spare time, I'd become a lawyer.

If I didn't suddenly have a few years free but still wanted to do something, I'd do professional exams in an area tangential to the one I work on to broaden my skills and double my potential employers.

I’d go to medical school and work my way through to be a pathologist but as I am now 46 with no spare money, I can’t justify 11+ years of training for that! grin

Lifeisabeach09 Sat 16-Mar-19 10:56:50

Yes, IT or business.

FuckertyBoo Sat 16-Mar-19 10:59:45

Oh interesting to have two people say interpreter on the one thread.

I know someone who is just finishing his medical degree in his mid thirties. By the time he’s trained up though he will be closer to 40.

Art foundation course and then fine art degree. It’s my retirement plan and I reckon I will make it happen.

FuckertyBoo Sat 16-Mar-19 11:01:59

Ooooooh a fine art degree! What an amazing idea.

Midwife. I’d love to be a midwife. Failed one interview for uni and gave up. So if I had the time and financial means I’d love to give it a go.

Merryoldgoat Sat 16-Mar-19 11:02:59

I’d become an Interior Designer.

TinselAndKnickers Sat 16-Mar-19 11:03:19

A beautician grin I love chatting to people and making people happy so I'd love to do this and have my own business in it one day!

jiggsymalone Sat 16-Mar-19 11:03:39

Outdoor instructor.
Currently trying to work through the qualifications while working but it's taking me a really long time. If I had the time and money I would do one of the trainee/apprenticeship schemes that many outdoor centres do.

FuckertyBoo Sat 16-Mar-19 11:04:59

I’ve often thought that tinsel! My only worry is that I’m a bit squeamish, so cutting people’s cuticles would make me feel ill.

hendal Sat 16-Mar-19 11:09:00

Costume design! I’d love to go back to Uni and do a degree in costume for theatre but don’t feel can justify the fees or loss of earnings now to do so.
I’d love to be working in the costume dept of the Royal Opera House or a theatre.

ScreamingValenta Sat 16-Mar-19 11:10:12

Another vote for law. I'd have loved to do this after graduating, but I couldn't afford it.

FuckertyBoo Sat 16-Mar-19 11:10:50

I love reading these. Especially the arty ones. I’d secretly love to be a theatre lovie grin.

Uptheshard Sat 16-Mar-19 11:11:29

Am interpreter! Or retrain as a hypnotherapist. Actually leaving job soon so need to choose!

JosephineHass Sat 16-Mar-19 11:12:32

Interior designer...🥰

FuckertyBoo Sat 16-Mar-19 11:12:34

Oh exciting uptheshard! Have you just jacked it in? What are your plans?

Blondie87 Sat 16-Mar-19 11:12:35

Ooo good question. If I wasn't as squeamish as I am, didn't have a young family and a mortgage etc, I'd love to retrain as a psychologist or an obstetrician.

RuggyPeg Sat 16-Mar-19 11:15:45

Would have loved to be a pathologist. Right now though, I'd love to be a hairdresser. No cutting though, only colour. I don't want to do the apprenticeship though either - I just want to go on courses for colourists and do fabulous transformative colours and be top of my game, commanding huge prices and just doing one or two clients a week 😃

FuckertyBoo Sat 16-Mar-19 11:18:35

Haaaa yes, that’s the problem with these dreams peg. I just want the glory! None of the unpleasant work thanks wink.

Cabbagesoupsucks Sat 16-Mar-19 12:15:07

Very interesting thread

DisplayPurposesOnly Sat 16-Mar-19 12:35:43

By the time he’s trained up though he will be closer to 40

And still have half his working life in front of him, so well worth it.
