AIBU?

to hate that WhatsApp shows you are 'online'?

Just that really. Most of my friends and colleagues prefer to communicate by WhatsApp. Great for sending photos etc. I hate however that it shows you as 'online' - it's weird and stalkerish (IMO). Is there any way at all to turn this off?

Go to privacy under setting and you can turn off last seen from there

I’ve turned off my “last active” because I hate it

But yeah I know what you mean.

@wanderlustgirl people can still see when you're online though, it seems. I have a feeling it can't be turned off.

@TabbyMumz if you go on WhatsApp and someone opens your chat log whilst you're using it, they can see 'online' under your name. It's annoying.

I thought I had turned this off?!

one of my friends said to me how nice it is that you can see if someone has read your message. I think I turned that off too.

I also think if if it shows "read" it might just mean you clicked on it, but not that you've actually read it. She seemed surprised when I said that.

You can't stop from appearing online. Only control who sees it (everyone/contacts), and hide last online.

If you click on it, the conversation would open so you would have read it?

Yeah I hate that about what'sapp too. I turned off my 'last seen'.. who needs to know that anyway??

Btw.. you can go in WhatsApp without appearing online, you can read messages too and they won't show up as read. Just turn on your phone's flight mode. (Remember to turn it back off again when you're done though.. )

Anchor

not necessarily, I might click on it at work and then the boss comes in or something. Grin Admittedly that's rare.

I'm off to look at it again to see about this "online" thing.

If its a long message you can open it, instantly close it and not read it but pretty hard not to read a one line message.

If you don't want the sender to know you've read it do it offline, I don't think that shows it as read

Or you can just read the message as it pops up on your main screen without actually going into WhatsApp.

Thanks for the tip. But why should you have to do this in the first place? I hate it too.

You still need to be online to reply though!

You can type the message and 'send' it.. it will only actually send when you turn flight mode off though. AFAIK.. haven't actually gone that far yet..

Surely even if you read a message when offline it shows up as read as soon as you go back out of airplane mode? And you can reply- type it in when offline then go off WhatsApp and when you switch the airplane mode off it sends.....

Newadventure now I want to know why you know Grin

I just checked, read receipts are definitely off and I've checked "nobody" for who can see if I'm online. Surely that means..nobody?

If you get a message on WhatsApp come up when your phone is locked you can swipe on the message choose manage and reply that way without going on WhatsApp and without appearing online at all

I'm not a whatsapp developer or anything but if you google it thethingswedoforlove you'll see that pretty much every tech site agrees that if you read offline the ticks don't go blue

kateandme · 14/03/2019 22:30

so if you were to get a message, turn flight mode on,read the message, come out of it,then turn flight mode back off...would it come up as read then?
