about a toddler tantrum

Ridiculous and trivial ...

DS (3 1/2) had a tantrum in the bath because a bottle of shower gel was shower gel and not bubble bath.

He kept asking me what it was and every time I responded "shower gel" he said "no, it's bubble bath". He then told me I was making him cross and wanted his dad. DH comes in and he asked what it was and DH said "ok then its bubble bath".

What would you do?

AIBU to insist it is what it is? Or is DH BU for giving into a tantrum?

I did warn you it's ridiculous and trivial!

I’d have said bubble bath .

Sirzy Tue 12-Mar-19 19:19:38

I would have said it’s bubble bath

That would very much fall into the pick your battles category

OnlyFoolsnMothers Tue 12-Mar-19 19:19:59

Most of the time you shouldn’t give into a tantrum but bloody hell just say bubble bath!!!!

TowerRavenSeven Tue 12-Mar-19 19:20:07

Bubble bath for me too. You know, pick your battles and all that.

Pick your battles. Is it worth the aggro in the long run? Is it going to cause problems further down the line?

At bathtime I would’ve said it was bubble bath. He clearly wanted a win and that was an easy win to let him have but I have no idea if that’s the right thing to do!

I'm with you and would stand my ground, however I now have a ridiculously argumentative and stubborn 6 year old so I am probably not best placed to answer!

PotteringAlong Tue 12-Mar-19 19:22:04

I’d have said it’s bubble bath. Why have a petty argument with a toddler about something that doesn’t matter? Pick your battles and all that.

I'd call it what it was. Then when DC disagrees would tell DC to call it whatever they wanted.

You really need to choose your battles and this isn't one. This isn't giving into your DC, this is agreeing to disagree over that something that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I've always been too stubborn and now I've created a mini me!

I normally do pick my battles with the kids quite well but FFS... it's shower gel. It is not bubble bath... that's a bare faced lie.

Well he's not a toddler if he's 3.5.

Yes ywbu, he's probably tired and just wanted to be appeased.

SpogTheDog Tue 12-Mar-19 19:24:19

If we're being pedantic he isn't a toddler.

I wasn't actually arguing back and forth. I said shower gel but he wanted me to say bubble bath. I said he could call it bubble bath but I'll call it shower gel. That's when he told me I was making him angry.

"whatever you say my darling, mammy is just glad it's nearly bedtime" grin

I probably wouldn't have gotten into it.

Boobiliboobiliboo Tue 12-Mar-19 19:25:49

it's shower gel. It is not bubble bath

The contents of the bottle are exactly the same whatever it’s labelled with!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece Tue 12-Mar-19 19:26:11

Oh lord, this couldn’t come more under “pick your battles”.

Why try and prove a point to a 3 year old over something like this?! What will it achieve?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 Tue 12-Mar-19 19:26:44

I sometimes use shower gel for bubble bath if we run out🤷‍♀️
Your preschooler would have been right in my house

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin Tue 12-Mar-19 19:26:51

To a three year old it is still a liquid that will create bubbles when out in the bath, even if not as bubbly as proper bubble bath.

64sNewName Tue 12-Mar-19 19:27:45

“a bare faced lie” grin

Yes you’re right OP. Next time get right up in your DS’s grill and bellow, “Why must you turn this house into A HOUSE OF LIES?!!”

nombrecambio Tue 12-Mar-19 19:28:21

Ok... this is lighthearted!

It wasn't a massive argument. It was an exchange that pissed DS off because I wouldn't say the words "bubble bath".

nombrecambio Tue 12-Mar-19 19:29:40

@64sNewName I was thinking more of that artist from the Fast Show... "what's for tea tonight? More lies and deceit?".

hazeyjane Tue 12-Mar-19 19:30:39

It's by the bath. It makes bubbles....
Bubble bath!

nombrecambio Tue 12-Mar-19 19:30:59

And there's no way shower gel froths up like bubble bath. Nah, I'm not having that.
