To think no, she shouldn't "have faith in the justice system"

The father of Olly Sheridan has been in the news again today, to say Ellie Yarrow-Sanders should have faith in the justice system and bring him home.

Having followed the case for the last few months I can't see why she should have faith in them, and I hope her and Olly are safe and well.

The story has also be shared on the daily mail, but I don't think anyone would appreciate a link to that. Smile

Very sad story.
I hope Ellie and Olly are still alive and safe.

I'm not familiar with the back story and the link does nothing to explain.

Why shouldn't she have faith in our justice system?

Worra

There's quite a long backstory, which involves private court hearings and a high court judge using twitter to urge Ellie to return Olly. However, in contrast very little is being said about Ellie's side of the story, and why she went on the run.

I have been involved in 2 significant court cases and justice failed ime.
Can't see that's changing in this case tbh.

Sorry UserThenLotsOfNumbers I didn't see your post. Why do you say safe and alive? I wasn't aware there were any suspicions about them being deceased Shock

As a person who has worked in abuse charities for some time I do not have any faith in our so called justice system at all. It fails woman and children on a daily basis.

If the details in Ellies letter are true, I can understand her taking her son and leaving. If she felt like she wasn't being listened to and a manipulative man was being believed she would have felt like she had no choice.

I hope they are both safe.

MissMalice Thank you, I hadn't actually seen that site.

Debfronut I'm very sorry to hear you have personal first hand experience of issues like this. What do you think would happen if she came out of hiding? Sad

It’s sad that people feel the system has let down but people who work in the criminal justice system are doing their very best.

A manipulative man can make himself appear exactly how he knows will gain sympathy and respect, and lie and distort the truth to gain what he wants. I don’t have faith that the justice system would realise that this was happening Sad

Exactly Eyes she must have felt like her world was falling apart and no one was listening to her. Sad

Bowchicawowow I've no doubt most of them are trying to do their best. However, in this case they've taken the unusual step to post on twitter, claiming they will give her a voice in court. To a frightened mother, who doesn't feel she is being listened to, what good is a voice in court?

IceRebel What else can they do apart from give her a voice in court?

After having navigated the system with a family member I can safely say I have ZERO faith in the Family Courts. ZERO.

I wouldn't advise anyone to have faith in the police or justice system based on my experience.
The 2 police officers who came to tell me my son was dead were very kind. But that's about it really.
Several other terrible things were handled with indifference, incompetence or both.
I agree there are probably reasons to be concerned about the safety and wellbeing of this woman and her child.

Perhaps reassure her that her child will not be removed? She seems to have been complying with access visits, until she thought they were going to place Olly in foster care. I haven't seen them giving her reassurance that this wasn't going to, or would not happen.

The issue is that she believed that being appointed a Guardian meant Foster Care amd it didn't. It meant that Olly was getting what she wanted, listened to.

Did her Solicitor ever clarify why she believed that?

She's gone into a panic and fled. He can't live on the run, unless she has been able to get out of the UK.

Could she have got, or will get desperate enough to kill them both? The truth is, no-one knows.

IceRebel I am sad to say despite what the Judge says in public her actions would go against her and he will probably be given custody or at least 50/50 access which again is so hard for children. Small children are not listened to at all and a controlling coercive partner is worse than a physically abusive partner because they are so clever at hiding the abuse. Its supposed to be for the best interest of the child but these sort of people usually want custody/access solely to punish and continue the control of the ex partner. I also work with teenagers so I see the product of these judges decisions later down the line and its heart breaking.

I don't believe so, but it says a lot that she felt unable to clarify what it meant. If it was indeed to allow Olly to be listened to, you have to wonder how it was presented to her. How did the message get muddled and turn into her believing he was to be taken into foster care.

While her letter is emotive, she clearly doesn't understand the role of a guardian ad litem and statements like "what kind of parent would ask for one of those for their child??" because she thinks it means the child going into foster care is just going to make the judge feel that she isn't rational and that her ex is actually making sound, fair decisions on behalf of the child.
I'm sure he is the monster she says he is but taking a child to Florida when he should have been at home for contact with his Dad? So silly. And she seems to think that the judge is at fault for enforcing the order. Again, she's not giving the court a good opinion of her. I would also have refused to send my child to a house where he alleged he'd been hit by his father but I wouldn't leave the country and go on holiday. I'd stay, and make sure that I was ready to tell the court, Ss, my solicitor etc why my child wasn't going to contact.

She won't get a good result if she trusts in the courts now as she's forever marked herself out as a flight risk and a parent who is more concerned with the man's treatment of her rather than what's best for the child (NOT my opinion, just a conclusion it would be very easy for the court to come to)
