Yes itโ€™s not AIBU topic but traffic and worried etc . Sorry !
A month or so ago fell and landed on knees hard with all my weight on them ๐Ÿ˜–
Really painful for a week
Then it ababated but now worse again and limping
I am Pretty active and cycle most days

I know GP canโ€™t help but has anyone had this ? Work FT and cycle every day so if I need physio will pay for it . Just worried I might have damaged something and I need my knees to be pain free

Just curious if anyone ever had this happen to them and where you get them checked out

Thanks

GP can help with a referal to NHS physio however waiting lists can be long depending on where you live so get yourself seen as soon as you can, failing that a private physio/sports therapist is your best bet, ask friends/on your local Facebook group for recommendations.

I think you should see the GP. You may need an x-ray or an MRI

Definitely don't go to a doctors. They don't know nothing. Ask some randoms on the internet. They'll give you the best advice

As I canโ€™t get a GP appt for minimum 2 weeks I took the opportunity to ask well meaning strangers who might have experienced same issue and could advise
Thanks anyway , will do

Have you tried anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen cream)?
It sounds like physio consult time to me.
How much cycling do you do on a work day (miles or minutes)?
Were your knees always good before this fall?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/03/2019 22:35

Yes I have and it helped thanks

Cycle for 1.5 hours a day and knees were great before the fall

I just donโ€™t want to waste NHS time if the best thing is to go straight to physio

But scared I Might have fucked myself up !

That's life for you... one fuck up after another. Wink

Could you ease off the cycling for a few weeks? I trashed my knees cycling. Knee is most complicated joint in body IIRC, so I won't try to diagnose yours. Just thinking yours need some kindness.

Thanks Grin

I will definitely try a new technique and look into getting some advice from a
Professional
Other than โ€˜oh my knee really hurtsโ€™ and limping

But in London getting any medical advice is such hard hard work . ! And cycling keeps me sane

I trashed a knee with a bad fall about 15 years ago. Too late for you I know obviously but in retrospect I should have put an icepack on it. Unfortunately during the same incident I'd poured boiling tea all over my wrist so put the icepack on that, not the knee, even though it was hurting like xxxxx .... Anyway scalded wrist was sorted after about 2 hours. Unfortunately knee cap wasn't. After a lot of only just polite shouting at GP I was referred to specialist, and now have a shiny new knee. Trauma can set off arthritis and that was what had happened.

I've knackered both knees in my time and would strongly recommend paying to see a good sports physio. They can test for certain injuries and will tell you if you need to see a gp for other tests etc. Mine has been invaluable over the years, though I'm in Scotland so he's no use for you.

Call your surgery and speak to reception about the process for self referring to physio - my old surgery in Surrey had a physio they contracted to for those able to pay for their treatment and you could generally get an appointment within a few days. Alternatively they may recommend self referral somewhere else without needing a GP appointment. I know where I am now in Cornwall we can self refer to NHS physio and they will assess without needing a GP appointment to free up valuable appointments with GPโ€™s.

I've injured both knees skiing, had cartilage surgery in one. Most recent injury they said new advice isn't to operate but REST. You'll prob need to lay if the cycling for a while. Did you have any kind of twist in the knees when you came down?

I have agonising knee pain after a fall onto my knee three years ago when I didn't get it checked out. It turned out I had a serious injury and I'm lucky I can still walk so do go and get seen.

Thanks to everyone who posted
After a very bad day caved and went to minor injuries

Told to get physio which I will but no major damage per the X-ray

With hindsight I should have stopped cycling immediately so will get the bus for the next few weeks Sad

Thanks for answering . I do appreciate it

Years back I had a very bad hard fall on to my knee on concrete. It was agonising, I was sure I had done long term damage - de wasn't sure x-ray showed nothing after MRI they concluded I had bruised the bone on my kneecap - sounds trivial but actually took 9mths to heal. Anti-inflammatories and gentle exercise and application of coolpacks /heat kept me moving.

9 months ! ๐Ÿ˜– I am
Still very pained and itโ€™s only 5 weeks

Are you all healed now ?

Yes all healed up no lasting damage, to be fair the worst of the pain was at the beginning and it was just dull aches and knowing when I'd done too much at the end(all checked by dr)
I now just have a quite rational fear of the concrete floor I slipped on, I much better at not rushing when having my hands full! I think it I'd been able to catch myself I wouldn't have hit the ground quite so hard and may have just got away with a normal bruise.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 18/03/2019 15:46

God - my X-ray didnโ€™t show anything so not sure if I push for a scan via private healthcare or just be patient

Such a shitter as canโ€™t really do much itโ€™s definately fucked .

Glad you healed and yes I will take so much care I never want a fall like this again

Itโ€™s my age ?

Just done exactly the same thing to my knees. Great physios at Crystal Palace physio centre if your South of the river ๐Ÿ˜ Mine are now massively improved but still a way to go ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

I only had an MRI as I am more susceptible to damage as I have Rheumatoid arthritis and have been on steroids for long periods of time so my consultant was keen to double check.

Speak to your GP or see a good physio (one that's been recommended if possible) if you are still worried.
Try Epsom salts in a warm bath - no idea why they help but they seem to (might be psychosomatic but who cares if it feels better)

I slipped in Asda and landed hard on my right knee. Had swelling and bruising as expected. 18 months later I needed a knee replacement, as my kneecap had been partially dislocated; and was rubbing on my joint, causing osteoarthritis.

Try to get GP referral to a knee specialist. I damaged mine (just kneeling to get something from under bed & it collapsed). Was fobbed off with (very lovely) physio who fought to get me a referral - took 11 months but when I finally saw surgeon he was very cross I'd not managed to get to him earlier. Gave me a steroid injection into knee joint to take the inflammation down. 10 days later, once it had settled, was pain free.

I recently sprained my medial ligament. Went to physio as first and only port of call.

Knees are fuckers!

My knee was injured running 3, maybe 4 years ago now. I used to,run more than 30 miles a week. Thus followed lots of physio, 2 x private MRI scans, steroid injections, plasma injections and private ortho appointments at a cost of several thousand pounds and my knee is still permanently swollen and I can't do much exercise.

I can cycle on my electric bike, I can walk but too many hills and it's very painful, I won't run again which was my passion.

I hope your knee fares better. Get yourself to a really good sports physio would be my best advice.

I feel really low about it to be honest. The thing that kept me sane was my cycle
To and from work .
But I am in no doubt that my bike ride this weekend has set it off
Being in pain all the time really fucking sucks doesnโ€™t it . A lot of things are shit right now and this has made everything worse . I will try physio but seek a referral in parallel . I am lucky enough to have private healthcare for work (itโ€™s hard to get treatment and you need to persevere but still)
Feel like all the hard work and effort to get healthy is down the drain
Sorry really low today Sad
