Do I persuade him to wear the hat in the cat costume I’ve bought against his better judgement or sending him in uniform knowing everyone else will be dressed up.
This nonsense raises my blood pressure every bloody year

My DS won't dress up either.
He goes in normal clothes (no uniform at our school) and the costume goes with him in a bag. Sometimes he is encouraged by his friends into wearing it, sometimes not.

No stress

Can’t he go as a schoolboy? Just William or something?

DS didn’t like dressing up when he was little then he discovered SpiderMan...

Send him in uniform, no point dressing up if they don't enjoy it. Plenty of books about school children if he's worried about not being a book character.

Not the cat costume if he feels wrong in it.

Is there something closer to normal home clothes you could cobble together?

If he hates dressing up can't you go with a character who wears normal clothes?

For example Harry (from bucketful of dinosaurs) Dennis the Menace, Charlie Bucket (just print off a ticket)

If everyone else is dressing up, then I think he may feel left out in his school uniform.

Jeans, Tshirt and hoodie - Alex Rider
Same, with orange Tshirt: Percy Jackson (bonus points if you Sharpie 'Camp Halfblood on it)

My ds also hates dressing up. I've told him its optional. If he wants to go in his uniform, I'm fine with it. However, despite hating it, he also wants to dress up as doesn't want to be left out Confused. This always leads to a fun morning of stroppiness and moaning Grin

Just let him go in his uniform.

Ds is 5 and going as Tim from a Topsy and Tim book. He has a vaguely looking football kit on. He was going to be spiderman but changed his mind last night.

Dd used to go as Tilly from the Tilly pony books and just wear her riding gear.

Lots of characters in books are just normal people. Out of all the dress up days I find world book day the easiest. I see parents spending £20/£30 on costumes and sigh. WBD is to encourage a love of reading, I would imagine the money would be better spent on new books personally but each to their own.

My son hated dressing up. I never forget the year he announced he was going as "me, from my diary"

Ds never dresses up. Or does non uniform days.

Let him wear what he is happy in

Charlie cook is easy, jeans and a stripey top? There are quite a few characters that don’t require such an elaborate costume as the cat in the hat Smile

Dd going as Lucy out of the lion the witch and the wardrobe. tarton skirt purple jumper with diamond pattern with blouse underneath cardboard evacuee label with Lucy's name and address done. she's in her own clothes but it kind of looks ww2 time ish. She does love to dress up though.

Ds, now 12, just refused to dress up at school (he did once put on a pair of round glasses and drew a zigzag on his forehead but that was as far as it went!). He was a good pupil otherwise. In his end of y6 report his headteacher wished him all the best at senior school and said he had always admired his steadfast resistance to putting on a costume!

Let him wear uniform. You can send his costume in a bag in case he changes his mind.
One of mine has ASD and spent a lot of dress up days as the only child in uniform.

DS also hates dressing up so he’s going as Jamie from dinosaur cove. This involves jeans, T-shirt and a rucksack. We’ve made him a ‘fossil finder’ out of cardboard but he can put that in his rucksack and forget about it if he wants.

My sons gone in as the Argos catalogue. He too hates dressing up and I won’t force the issue!

Frances I applaud your son 😂

DS4 hates it too, he is very specific about his clothes - uniform is for school and so when I try and put normal clothes on him and a PJ Masks costume on top for school he goes into absolute meltdown. DD moans she wants to wear her PJs, I moan I've just gone out and bought her the costume she said she wanted 3 weeks ago, everyone just bloody moans. Then at pick up I get dragged into the pop up book store at school and end up buying 3 books for 40 quid I could have got for 20 online. And always a pointy fucking hand on a stick that is never touched again.

Happy World Book Day! 😬🙄

I can't believe this wasn't your first thought. Smile 9 is very old to be cat in the hat, and i'm guessing most of his friends will be wearing their own clothes sort of costumes. Grin

Thank god out school doesn't do dress up day. Our head can be s right misery guts but I'm with him on this. Dressing up as a character does nothing to encourage a love of reading on anyone over the age of 6.

Ds2 (11) is also going as Alex Rider/any other character in a book who wears normal clothes. I suspect there will be many others too Grin

My DD hates dressing up. We always choose a character who is just a little girl in little girl clothes and she goes as that!
Today she is Daisy Dirt from Miss Dirt the Dustman's Daughter: stripy t-shirt , white skirt, brown boots.
