To be so upset about needing to wear glasses!

Okay first world problem I know...

I went for an eye test recently and was told I need glasses. Which is fine, nothing wrong with that plenty of people do of course!

I'm not the type to care overly about how I look especially so it's not a vanity thing but I've shocked myself with how upset I am about this.

It's more because I just can't find any that I think look okay on me and it's frustrating. Every single pair I try on look ridiculous on me. DP says they look fine but I just feel so horrible about myself in them that I end up not wearing them.

I have lots of friends who wear them and they all look fab. Some of them I can't even picture them without them.

I feel really silly getting so upset about this but I just feel incredibly uncomfortable in them and just can't find the right shape or style for me at all.

I really need to start wearing them but I can't bring myself to.

Did anyone else have an uncomfortable/difficult transition stage having to start wearing glasses in adulthood? I look like a different person and I hate it.

Ahh I remember feeling exactly like this! When they told me I needed glasses I was in a bit of a surprised daze, the lad downstairs helped me choose a pair and off I went. I didn’t like wearing them at aaaaall and felt like it wasn’t my face or felt more shy if that makes any sense!

A few months ago I enquired about contacts and I feel SO much better wearing those, I’d definitely see if you can have a trail of them if possible x

Yes completely! It's like it changes my entire look and its so different. I can't get used to it. And 100% re being more shy. I don't want to speak to anyone or draw attention to me when I have them on.

Which is daft because no one will be looking especially if they have never seen me without them! But I can't help it. I feel so incredibly uncomfortable.

I may have a look into contacts, thank you. It makes me nervous the idea of putting something in my eyes but I may give it a try.

Laser correction?

OhHelpx Wed 06-Mar-19 16:21:41

Yes yes yes about drawing attention to yourself! I wore them to work a few times and I genuinely avoided conversations which is so pathetic I know.

I’d definitely give them a go! I was a bit funny about it but it’s honestly fine. I have mine through Specsavers and they made me sit and practice each eye for a while taking them in and out before they sent me away with them.

I love being a glasses wearer! Keep looking til you find the right types and you won't want to be without them soon.

Amanduh Wed 06-Mar-19 16:36:37

Just get contacts! You don’t know they’re there. And glasses for at home/down time etc. Easy.

Did you try on any half-rimmed or rimless? They might be less of a shock to start with.

All the best people wear glasses OP. It’s just a fact off life. Welcome to the elite of the world wink

I’m short sighted. I knew I had a problem when I couldn’t read the road signs until I had driven past them. When I got my first pair of specs I was so stunned by the transformation in my vision that I couldn’t care less what they looked like, because I could actually see beyond the end of my nose! I now love my very cool Ray-ban prescription sunglasses.

If you are really struggling to see yourself in glasses, innove the thick chunky frames which seem to be fashionable at the moment and try starting with a rimless pair, or look into contact lenses.

Jsmith99 Wed 06-Mar-19 16:44:52

I meant ‘ignore the thick chunky frames’.

I have absolutely terrible eyesight and have needed glasses since the age of 6. If you want to try contacts I would recommend Dailies Total 1 by Alcon if you can get them in the UK. You just wear them for one day and toss them. They are unbelievably comfortable to wear as they somehow have water in them. I totally forget I have them in until late in the evening when my eyes feel dry.

They could be on the pricey side but worth every penny.

I have just ordered some new glasses that are fancy Prada (!) as I literally have been wearing the same pair for 15 years! But I usually wear contacts and rarely wear my glasses outside my house - more for convenience than vanity as my eyesight is so rubbish. I think contacts are safer because if I suddenly broke my glasses I would be like Mr Magoo 😂

Confusedbeetle Wed 06-Mar-19 16:47:21

This is so silly

TeenTimesTwo Wed 06-Mar-19 16:47:47

What do you have for sunglasses?
Choose a similar style, get reaction lenses and go for it.

Tirednessandmoretiredness Wed 06-Mar-19 16:48:19

I get the opposite. I've had glasses since primary school and now without them on I feel naked. Tried contacts a while ago and I do sometimes wear them if doing something where glasses are difficult but my face just looks wrong without glasses. Remember you can take your prescription elsewhere so you can try on in other shops to find some you like.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince Wed 06-Mar-19 16:48:51

I’ve worn glasses since 25, and l love it!!! Makes me look intelligent. Both ex dh and current dh like a women in glasses.

I get excited when it’s time to get new ones and choose them very carefully!

DamnItJanett Wed 06-Mar-19 16:48:54

My problem is with long distance. I guess because I can get by quite easily day to day without them I just think 'oh sod it'.

But quite rightly it was pointed out to me that it will get worse if I continue to put strain on my eyes so I do need to try and wear them.

I tried rimless ones but honestly I liked them even less on me. I have some 'ok' ones which are not chunky but not rimless either that I can just about bear but I still don't like them!

Dimsumlosesum Wed 06-Mar-19 16:49:32

This is why I wear contacts.

Lwmommy Wed 06-Mar-19 16:49:57

Metal frames and half rimless are good if you have a low prescription. There are a few websites (glassesdirect.com) where you can take your photo and virtually try on the frames which are good.

I've worn glasses for the last 65 years and I still never feel I find ones that I like and am happy with so I can understand your woes OP.

One of my DDs wears glasses for driving and she looks really good in hers. My other DD wears contacts as she hates how she looks in glasses.

You could try shopping around different opticians to see if anywhere has something that you feel happier with; you don't have to buy them from the optician where you had your eye test.

I would highly recommend contacts. I used to wear them but it wasn't ideal because I have a very complex prescription but if you've just started wearing glasses you should be able to get daily or weekly contacts very easily.

A lot of people find the idea of sticking their finger in their eyes quite strange but you will be shown how to handle them and the person showing you will not let you take them away until you're comfortable with putting them in and taking them out.

All the high street optician will give you a trial period for contacts so you can find out if you're happy with them before committing yourself to anything.

Also when my husband reached 48 he needed glasses. He doesn't wear them all the time but I think he look fab in them, very distinguished! He still has a full head of hair that is salt and pepper and the combo is great.

PickAChew Wed 06-Mar-19 16:53:10

We all wear glasses, in our house, and it's reached the point where I think a face without specs looks a bit naked.

You do get used to seeing yourself in them.

SpeckledyHen Wed 06-Mar-19 16:53:14

Contact lenses . I have just started wearing them - amazing honestly .

Agreed. I was a refuser for ages then realized I could barely read labels when I was shopping in Boots...cheeky nice assistant suggested I might want to try the reading glasses section and the rest is history...
