Filling a skip by chucking heavy things from the scaffolding at 1st floor roof height

My neighbours are having a loft conversion and their builders are currently standing at he heighest point of the scaffolding and flinging rubble bags, joists and random planks straight from the roof into the skip on the road below. It's a quiet street of terraced houses with short front gardens and the skip is on the road. Thankfully little pedestrian traffic on the pavement in between the skip and the house.

Is this pretty normal practice? No one has been hurt and they are a pretty good aim. It's bloomin noisy though and there are cars parked about 3m either side of skip.

Would you want to know if your builders were doing this? I want to avoid being a moaning curtain twitcher but if this is dangerous bad practise then I'd want to intervene

When I redecorated, I chucked things out my first floor window to the space below to save me having to carry them all the way downstairs (plus it was very satisfying) Obviously I made sure no one was walking past.

Depends if bits are flying up which could damage the cars?

Yes. It is normal. It saves carrying the rubbish through the house. If anything is missing the skip, that's different. I would assume they have a good aim as they do it all the time! I think building work in built up areas always carries a nuisance value. It is inevitable. I guess the owners of the cars can make up their own minds about whether to move them or not. I assume they are at home too or perhaps they belong to the builders? Most people want the work done as quickly as possible with the least mess possible. The disruption will not be forever so just leave them to it.

People where I live get the train to work do they wouldn't / didn't know it was happening until they saw the damage

Doesn’t sound like best practice to me. Something could bounce off the edge and injure a passer by. Can’t they use a chute?

The cars are 3m away from the skip though. That would be getting the aim spectacularly wrong! It's only from a first floor window!

Sorry just noticed it is a loft conversion. However, it is not that high. Yes a chute would be better but they tend to be used for taller buildings.

Don’t know about the skip business but I feel for you with a loft conversion going on next door. It seems everyone around us is doing this, and the resulting bolt on boxes are hideous. We feel as if we are in a goldfish bowl. Whatever happened to a couple of velux windows?

We had this happen, they were renovating a house and throwing bits of it into a skip, aside from the mess the noise was horrendous. Someone called the council and it stopped, they got one of those tunnel things. It only needs something to bounce out and hurt someone or land in the road, a safety issue.
