To completely lose my shit at these teenagers?

I’m a mature postgrad student studying a full time masters whilst also working.
I’ve booked a few days off work so I can complete 2 assignments which are due in next week.
I’m sat in a “quiet zone” pod in the university library and there is a group of inconsiderate teenage students crammed into the pod next to me and using it as a fucking social area.
I’m trying to study but all I can hear is them waffling on about absolute shit really fucking loudly.

The security guard has already been over to ask them to move from the pod (they’re meant to be for one person only) and to keep the noise down.

I’d have no issue if they were doing group work and discussing quietly... but they’re currently discussing the Kardashians at top volume and being rude twats.

I’ve asked them nicely to keep it down. I’m about to go nuclear angry

Liverbird77 Tue 05-Mar-19 12:40:23

Do it! I bet they'll soon scuttle off!

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 12:41:35

I may get done for murder. Big tall twat boy is filling me with rage, he’s the loudest

saxatablesalt Tue 05-Mar-19 12:42:02

Ugh teenagers are so annoying. No doubt I was equally as annoying as a teenager and my toddler ds will grow up and also be annoying, it's a rite of passage.

I was sitting behind a gaggle of them on the bus this morning. Just endless giggling and shouting and the most inane chat imaginable.

Clairaloulou Tue 05-Mar-19 12:43:55

Go for it, I would. I did it at the cinema the other day at some idiots who were ruining it for everyone.

sagradafamiliar Tue 05-Mar-19 12:44:27

Calm down. You need to approach someone other than a security guard who works in the library and ask them to remove the group.

GreatDuckCookery6211 Tue 05-Mar-19 12:45:18

Go over and tell them to be quiet or move. Hopefully they’ll do the latter.

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 12:45:26

@saxatablesalt on the bus is fine, it’s not meant to be a silent zone. This is.

TooTrueToBeGood Tue 05-Mar-19 12:46:15

Might be easier just to ask the security guard to desl with them. As they're already on his radar I expect he'll more than happy to.

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 12:46:35

I’m too polite 😂 I’ve sat he incandescent with rage because I’m too polite to tell them to shut up.
Fuck it. I’m doing it now

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 12:47:09

@TooTrueToBeGood security guard is about much use as a chocolate teapot

sagradafamiliar Tue 05-Mar-19 12:47:42

You might get a load of abuse and piss taking in return. Why not just ask someone whose job is it to tell them to leave?

steppemum Tue 05-Mar-19 12:49:15

you are not being unreasonable AT ALL>
They are in a library in a quiet pod.

Go over be firm and clear, spell it out. Tell them to get lost. Go to a cafe etc, but get out of the quiet zone, as people are trying to work, and they are breaking all the rules.

If they don;t respond, go and get the security guard and insist he kicks them out.

ivykaty44 Tue 05-Mar-19 12:49:52

Quietly ask them if they can explain what the issue is? The rules are there so people can study and they’ve been asked twice - so ask how or what is preventing them from behaving as requested?

booksandcaffeine Tue 05-Mar-19 12:50:15

Could you go to the help desk and tell one of the assistants? It's so annoying, it happened all the time when I was at uni.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy Tue 05-Mar-19 12:51:28

Do it! And tell us what happens...

RiverTam Tue 05-Mar-19 12:51:38

do it! I think that sometimes teens are so surprised at anyone not in obvious authority calling them out that it stuns them into silence.

IncrediblySadToo Tue 05-Mar-19 12:52:40

Lose your shit.

At least you’ll get done work done then.

I took the train into London on Sunday, I had work to do and so sat in the quiet zone. A woman and her two kids (about 6 & 8) got onto the basically empty train, in the Quiet Zone. WHY just why? They argued and she loud parented the entire fucking way there. Arghhhhhhhhhh. (Yes I could have moved to another carriage, but I didn’t, because I didn’t know if there was another supposedly quiet zone).

On the way home there were two GCSE year girls talking really loudly about how they ‘wish I gave a fuck, but don’t, so yeah not bovering wiv it. Parents can get to fuck’. Drone drone drone...

In the library, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell them to STFU or PO.

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 12:54:14

Annoying boy has gone now. 2 girls are left and they’re being quiet so no problems there.
I told them I had listened to them talking for 45 mins and is was disturbing me. The girls were apologetic but the boy huffed a bit... so I pointed out that the library quiet zone probably wasn’t the best place to discuss his private life bearing in mind he has no idea if I know “Lucy” or not.
He went red, and has left.l

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy Tue 05-Mar-19 12:56:01

He went red, and has left

Hahaha Nice work! grin

RiverTam Tue 05-Mar-19 12:56:15

hahahahahaaaaa! Silly twit! And there's female vs male socialisation in practise.

In my local library it drives the staff mad when kids coming in to use the computers to play games make a racket - it's not a youth club - but equally they probably have nowhere else to go.

Not the same for adult uni students!

steppemum Tue 05-Mar-19 12:59:15

Oh love it, especially the bit about 'Lucy' !!

Well, done, don;t wait so long next time.

Grumpelstilskin Tue 05-Mar-19 13:11:33

Errrm, can you fill us in about Lucy...? grin

Missingstreetlife Tue 05-Mar-19 13:14:22

Get the library manager

BlueMerchant Tue 05-Mar-19 13:17:47

Urgh. I can picture them now. Give it a few minutes and they'll start giggling.

RiverTam Tue 05-Mar-19 13:24:11

read the update, people, read the update...

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 13:24:37

@Grumpelstilskin from what I gathered they met a few weeks ago, she’s also a student here, she’s got “thick” (I hope he means she’s got shapely legs/bum and not insulting the poor girl’s intelligence) and he’s seeing her and his weekend. He hasn’t “banged” her yet but he’s going to give her the —most disappointing— best time when he does

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 13:24:57

Arghh strike out fail... why does it never work for me 😂

AutumnCrow Tue 05-Mar-19 13:29:07

God I hope that wasn't my DS.

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 13:33:16

@AutumnCrow is your son an Asian Aston Villa fan?

Margot33 Tue 05-Mar-19 13:35:03

Haha I love it! Well done! That lad will be wasting his day, wondering if you do know Lucy?!

AutumnCrow Tue 05-Mar-19 13:36:38

No he's a Newcastle supporter. Relief!

DuckbilledSplatterPuff Tue 05-Mar-19 13:39:01

Ha Ha. He probably had no idea he was transmitting his convo so clearly. No wonder he went red.. Nice one.

downcasteyes Tue 05-Mar-19 13:44:43

This made me laugh.

It never fails to amaze me how some students think that knowledge will flood into their minds via osmosis provided they are sitting in the library. Doesn't matter if they're doing nothing, it will just miraculously flood in.

I don't really understand it. If they pulled their shit together and worked for a solid 3-4 hours, they could have the rest of the day off and go sit in the glorious sunny park.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants Tue 05-Mar-19 13:58:41

Down they probably go home and reply to questions from parents about studying, "I was in the library for hours!" Yes, yes you were. grin

Ragwort Tue 05-Mar-19 14:04:53

down, somewhat embarrassed to remember my own uni days, I really though that by sitting in the library idly doing nothing it would count as ‘studying’ blush, my own DS is about to go to uni now & I just hope he has a better work ethic than I did.

CuriousaboutSamphire Tue 05-Mar-19 14:08:55

I was a mature student, many moons ago.

Whenever I went into the library there was a noticeable murmer and people would move around and settle down.

Librarian told me that the noisy students would be moving away from me and the quiet ones towards wherever I had put my bag. That happened even if I wasn't in the quiet room.

Turned out I was famous for having given a group of The Hot Boys and Mean Girls a total dressing down for ruining my quiet study, pissing their education up a wall and acting like spoiled brats! Apparently I finsihed my diatribe, sat in the middle of their huddle with my headphones on at full blast and totally ignored them thereafter.

My only memory is of being highly irritated at a gorup of noisy kids and hissing at them to piss off grin

So use the Power of Mature and have at 'em every single bloody time smile

Tinty Tue 05-Mar-19 14:16:20

OP Tell the girls that in actual fact you do know Lucy and will be informing her of the whole conversation. Tell them to relay this to Twat boy, and tell them to tell him to treat her with a lot more respect.
Ask them if they would like their boyfriends talking about them like that.
Bloody rude teenagers.

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 14:21:44

I was a decent undergrad, I socialised in the SU (a hell of a lot) and then cram studied in panic the day before an exam 😂

BreastSideStory Tue 05-Mar-19 14:23:01

@Tinty I’m tempted to walk past them on my phone and say
“Hi Lucy darling, it’s mum. Did you get your outfit for the gig on Saturday? Are you excited for your date? I think I met someone who knows you earlier”

InsomniaTho Tue 05-Mar-19 14:24:50

Also a mature student. Undergrad.

The librarians here go nuts at people who chatter in quiet zones grin I take great joy in watching them.

DaiStation Tue 05-Mar-19 14:26:23

Academic here, saluting you across cyberspace. This is one of the many, many reasons we adore mature students.

BlankTimes Tue 05-Mar-19 14:33:48

MarieIVanArkleStinks Tue 05-Mar-19 14:34:32

Glad you did it. I've done this before too, and got a round of applause from other people who were trying to work in the library!

Mummyoflittledragon Tue 05-Mar-19 14:35:47

This thread is ace op. Good on you!

Tinty Tue 05-Mar-19 14:38:29

Do it, Do it, Do it. grin

AJPTaylor Tue 05-Mar-19 14:48:46

Now you have sorted it. GET off mumsnet and write the feckin thing.

OldGreyBoots Tue 05-Mar-19 14:59:09

For what it's worth I'm a non-mature student and I hate them too grin

Andylion Tue 05-Mar-19 15:14:54

You need to approach someone other than a security guard who works in the library and ask them to remove the group.

At my library it is the security guard's job to deal with this.

Grumpelstilskin Tue 05-Mar-19 18:53:30

Hahahaha, deffo pretend to be Lucy's mum!

sagradafamiliar Tue 05-Mar-19 19:14:51

Andy yes but the security guard didn't deal with it. The librarians at my uni library (never saw any security guards) were quite fearsome and wouldn't tolerate loud breathing let alone loud chat especially in the quiet areas. You could even email them to report distracting behaviour.

BreastSideStory Wed 06-Mar-19 16:40:39

Today I found paradise. I did not know such a beautiful place existed...
I found a post-grad only study zone.
It was silent bliss grin and I finished one of my assignments today!

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer Wed 06-Mar-19 16:48:15

Are you using an iPhone or other Apple device? I had the issue with the strikeouts not working, and then I discovered 'smart punctuation'. If you go to Settings > General > Keyboard and look for 'smart punctuation' turn it off, and that should fix your strikeout issue!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince Wed 06-Mar-19 16:51:31

I just cried with laughing at the Lucy comment!!😂😂😂😂

Fishwifecalling Wed 06-Mar-19 16:58:18

Lucky Lucy!

JakeBallardswife Wed 06-Mar-19 17:18:17

Love the comment about Lucy's Mum. Lets hope that Lucy wises up.

IHateUncleJamie Wed 06-Mar-19 17:18:52

My dd is a first year and she LOATHES noise in the library. Mind you, she’s a massive perfectionist and more mature than I am so that might have something to do with it. grin People pissing about when she’s working makes her have all the rage.

I adore the idea of pretending to be Lucy’s Mum. 😂

elephantoverthehill Wed 06-Mar-19 17:28:46

I wonder if Lucysmam is reading this in horror.

elephantoverthehill Wed 06-Mar-19 17:30:26

Sorry that should have been @lucysmam

lucysmam Thu 07-Mar-19 09:17:34

@elephantoverthehill I wasn't until you @ tagged me! I'm going to have to read now
