to not want second hand mattresses?

So we have just bought some second hand bunk beds - they're fine, a bit tired but fine. I want to paint them, dh says paint won't go on paint.....I have no idea if that's true. He says we should stick on some star stickers on the scratches or otherwise it's a massive sanding job.

That's not my main niggle though. We have brought back the two mattresses which are a few years old - about four the man told us when we collected them. They are great quality but have some circular marks on them....

I can't get my head around it and want to get some new ones. I have seen some new ones in Argos - not great quality but are only £80 and they can be delivered tomorrow. Dh thinks I would be totally mad to replace very good quality matresses which are second hand for brand new cheaper quality ones.

Aibu to think it just feels icky?? I don't mind the frame but the matresses just make me feel uncomfortable : (

Change that price - the ones I like are £120 so that would be £240. It's a stretch for us right now but doable.

I would get new ones. But otherwise can get mattress protector things that are giant mattress bags. That would at least contain the icky-ness!!

Shudder at second hand mattresses. Just no! Think of the dust and sweat. That's just gross.

Buy Ikea ones. Mega cheap but really really good.

Definitely get new mattresses.
And if you get an electric sander I doubt it would take long..

So the posters who think second hand mattresses are 'icky" have never stayed in a hotel / student digs / friends' spare room / youth hostel?

Get decent mattress toppers and save the environment!

I totally get the holiday thing - but this is permanent furniture and coming into our house - it just feels different for some reason. Dh thinks I am being ridiculous. The matresses are really thick and great quality but there are a few large orange marks on them...just makes your mind wander!!

No I've never stayed in student digs or a hostel! I've done hotels but I'm mega fussy and sleep on top of all the sheets usually. I just couldn't have someone else's arse germs in my bed at home

Ps, Chalk painting doesn't require sanding or any prep beyond cleaning surface.

My DS bed and mine have lovely, expensive, comfortable second hand mattresses with brand new toppers on.
By contrast I have a cheap brand new mattress in the spare room and it's springy and nasty.
Buy new if you can afford good quality. Otherwise buy toppers.

I'd just get a couple of £5 mattress protectors from IKEA instead, wouldn't throw out mattresses only a few years old.

Just steam clean them. Bit daft to spend money you don’t really have to buy something that is inferior to what you already have. Cheap mattresses are always going to be bad for your back as well.

If you don’t have a steamer you can buy one in somewhere like wilkos for about £30.

Could you borrow a carpet cleaner that has a small spot cleaning attachment? I know our vax has one I use on the sofa. Or even a steamer maybe? Then at least the germs will be dead and if you got a mattress topper for the time being it’d be better?

Dc's IKEA single was £65, but I would happily accept second hand mattresses a few years old as long as they were firm. It's not about the cost for me.

Ebay have cheap single mattresses that are okay.
I paid £40 for a 4ft so a single would be cheaper.. and you could just get a topper for it?

Cheap mattresses are awful to sleep on. DD1 has a cheap Ikea one that was recommended for her bed frame and it's so uncomfortable. I love most things from Ikea but this is awful. We've bought a topper which has improved things slightly, but it's still not great. She's still fairly small and light at the moment so can get away with it, but we will have to change it as she grows.

In your circumstances OP, I'd steam clean the second hand ones and fit the protectors that fully zip up around them until I could afford new good quality mattresses.

I would have the mattresses cleaned & add toppers, better than sending them to landfill.

Paint can go on paint, you don't have to strip back to bare wood. Clean with sugar soap, light sand just to take shine off/give it a key, wipe down/hoover off the dust, decent gripping primer, paint. It just takes longer than stickers...

I am not at all fussy about cleanliness but I wouldn't use a second hand mattress. For a spare/occasional bed sure, but not as my main bed

We have second hand mattresses- never bothered me, and they have been completely fine. We are so wasteful and fussy asa society, and we are trashing the planet.
