NC for this!!😩 Ok so we have an air to water heating and air exchange system (newly built house) and MIL is staying over! She is VERY old school, wakes up EVERY morning and opens the bedroom window. I’m actually ok with this for 10mins etc but she tries to leave it open ALL DAY!!! I am blue In the face trying to explain to her that it is making our system work harder and that it is not needed!!! Everytime I close the window I come back an hour later and the bloody window is open AGAIN!! She is baffled as to how we can prevent damp etc!! I am fed up explaining that the system does it all!! That our house is pretty much airtight and that’s WHY it works so well, that’s why we have no damp, that’s why our house is an ambient temperature (except for when she leaves the flipping window open) I then notice a drop in temp and the heating system is clocking in unnecessarily. aibu to tell her if she doesn’t stop she can go home and open her own windows!! 😭😭😫 rant over!!

ItchySeveredFoot Sat 02-Mar-19 15:44:06

If she won't listen then lock the window.

Omgstop Sat 02-Mar-19 15:45:23

@ItchySeveredFoot I love this!! Except if there was a fire it wouldn’t be best 😬 😩

dementedpixie Sat 02-Mar-19 15:46:27

Just lock it during the day then after the 10 minutes of fresh air

ItchySeveredFoot Sat 02-Mar-19 15:46:30

Hmm hasn't considered that. Seems a bit jailer but lock during the day and then unlock at night? You should get your dp to have a word with her.

Holidayshopping Sat 02-Mar-19 15:47:43

Definitely lock it!

Omgstop Sat 02-Mar-19 15:49:22

He has tried too...honestly it’s draining! Teaching an old dog new tricks n all...😂😂😫😫 she just keeps banging on about condensation and smells!! Is=THE SYSTEM TAKES IT ALL OUT! 😩 3 more days and we’re done!! Thank god!!

Omgstop Sat 02-Mar-19 15:50:08

@dementedpixie yes I may have to do that 😬👍

Nanny0gg Sat 02-Mar-19 15:58:28

I'd hate that!

I like open windows for fresh air, not because of condensation

Dermymc Sat 02-Mar-19 15:58:51

Tbf I've worked in places with an "air exchange system" and opening a window works better! I know its annoying as it makes your system work harder.

lazymare Sat 02-Mar-19 15:59:51

I would hate not being able to open the windows.

HollowTalk Sat 02-Mar-19 16:00:35

Can you tell her you can't afford it?

So this system - what happens in the summer?

GreatDuckCookery6211 Sat 02-Mar-19 16:01:53

I’ve never heard of that system. Sounds claustrophobic not being able to open the window!

Boyskeepswinging Sat 02-Mar-19 16:05:37

she just keeps banging on about condensation and smells!! Is=THE SYSTEM TAKES IT ALL OUT!
In the nicest possible, non-judgy way, are you absolutely sure about this OP? She may be too polite to tell you that your house stinks. I've never experienced an air exchange system that provides air that smells as fresh as, well, fresh air.

Omgstop Sat 02-Mar-19 16:09:47

@Nanny0gg there is fresh air it comes in through the system but it heats it at the same time. (Can’t remember exact mechanics)

@lazymare yes you can open the windows (and doors)they just don’t get left open ALL day!

@In the summer the system only exchanges when necessary but it doesn’t come on at all really in the summer as the house is so well insulated and efficient that it’s not needed. Tbh it only comes on for about a half hour every few days even now. But since MIL has arrived it has come on 3 times. I open the windows myself in the morning while I brush my teeth and make bed and that is it. It’s a fantastically efficient system!!

BertrandRussell Sat 02-Mar-19 16:09:48

I’m with her. Horrible not to be able to open a window.

Fluffyears Sat 02-Mar-19 16:09:55

I’d justmlovk the window after it’s been open for a short time.

Omgstop Sat 02-Mar-19 16:11:44

@BertrandRussell I said she could open the window for 10mins or so (as I said I do it myself)but not all day it’s unnecessary

HollowTalk Sat 02-Mar-19 16:12:11

So do you have really low bills? Can you tell us what your heating bill is?

Omgstop Sat 02-Mar-19 16:15:52

@Boyskeepswinging it’s a brand new house I’m not 100%on all the inner working but it’s an air to water system with a heat exchange. I am extremely hung up on smells myself and there are no smells. I open bedroom and bathroom windows for 10-20 mins myself but there is no need to do it all day

DobbyTheHouseElk Sat 02-Mar-19 16:16:36

I’m with MIL. I’d be claustrophobic not opening windows and smelling the morning air. Hearing the birds etc.

DobbyTheHouseElk Sat 02-Mar-19 16:17:28

I think it’s hard to know if your home smells. You get used to the smells.

MaMaMaMySharona Sat 02-Mar-19 16:18:35

Whether you think it’s nice to have windows open in your own homes or not, that isn’t the point of this post. If you were at someone else’s house, would you continually open windows when you’ve been asked not to?

As a side point, leaving windows open in winter is a nooooo from me! blush

Dermymc Sat 02-Mar-19 16:18:44

So for an hour and a half per day you get fresh air, and the rest of the time it's stale AF.
I'm with MIL here.

JuniperBeer Sat 02-Mar-19 16:21:14

Is she sat in her bedroom all day? Tell her she’s welcome to open it if she’s in there but really dumb it down and say you’ve got something similar to air conditioning and in order for it to work the windows need to stay closed. Lock the window.
