To give pfb some chocolate cake?

I'm making DD's first birthday cake. What is the pfb etiquette here? Do I a) make a big gooey chocolate cake that will be delicious and let her have a little bit or b) make some kind of baby friendly low sugar healthy-ish cake like banana cake or something that won't be as nice but DD and the other babies can dig into.

Which one will get the most judgement/eye rolls?

Just give the kid some cake! Its her birthday. As long as it isn't a huge slab, a bit of chocolate cake on her birthday is fine.

Let them have the same as you. So either all have gooey chocolate cake or all have banana cake. No two tiered cake eating!

I just made nice cake and gave them some. . I've never understood the demonisation of sugar.

I got a multicoloured layer cake from M&S for ds’s first birthday. Fuck it. A few mouthfuls of cake won’t cause diabetes just yet.

It's her birthday. Just make a cake you think she will like and give her some.

Make her the chocolate cake! The amount she'll actually eat won't be that much so relax and enjoy SmileCake

I'd just forgot about the baby cake and buy all the babies mini spoons and heroin Wink

If there are lots of other babies I would do both as there will be at least a few parents who would prefer to hold off the sugar a little while longer (at least while the babies are young enough not to know what they are missing out on).

I don’t think anyone will judge or eye roll though - it’s just personal preference. I did give mine “proper” cake incidentally though they didn’t eat much (of anything)

Ok I am going for the annoying choice but I would do the healthy banana cake. If she doesn't eat much sugar it will still be a sweet treat for her and you can decorate it nicely.
She is too little to know any different so you might as well keep your usual healthy eating going.

She's not old enough to have expectations, including relating to taste. Aged 1, my DD would immensely have preferred to eat gherkins dipped in coffee, or pasta, to cake of any kind. She's nearly 2 and I'm still fairly sure she doesn't get what the fuss about cake is, though she'll eat chocolate buttons by the fistful if she can get them.

I would honestly make whatever you fancy, and bear in mind she and the other babies may very well prefer smushing it over their faces/crumbling it to bits/putting it down their nappies to eating it anyway. Nothing wrong with a bit of sugar; it's just there's not much point expecting a one year old baby to be predictable about what they want to eat.

Which one will get the most judgement/eye rolls?

Will anyone other than you actually care?

1st birthdays are more for the adults? Bake a decent cake for them. Your PFB can have a slither.

Just give her a small piece of chocolate cake.

I'm quite particular about what my son has (nothing full of 'crap') but I'm quite relaxed about small amounts of chocolate.

He had a piece of his birthday last year, and he'll have some in a few days for his 2nd birthday. Moderation is key

We had a Waitrose cake (cream and sponge) for my DS' first birthday, he ate his godmother's slice before I could stop him. Hope he enjoyed it! Grin

Normal chocolate cake and give her a little bit. Who’s going to eye roll.

Just bake whichever cake you like the best. It's cake. It's one day. There should be no angst - there's nothing wrong with something sweet and sugary every once in a while. She might love it but then again she might not even like it.

I'd go proper chocolate cake but I always take the icing off. I think home made treats aré much better than bought stuff with palm oil and other stuff

Thanks for the opinions! Looks like either would be fine. Although those who think she won't eat much have never met my bottomless pit of a DD Grin I will just restrict portion size

What sort of cake do you normally give her?

Report
Merename · 26/02/2019 20:48

I made my pfb a sugar free cake lovingly made of blueberry pancakes sweetened with apple purée and layered with fresh cream sweetened with strawberries! I was that mum! And a big normal cake for everyone else. I forget now when she first had sugar but it wasn’t for a while. DD2 is about to start weaning and I imagine she will be trying cake before she is 1. No one judged me that I could tell but I look back and realise I was too uptight about it...

I got a lovely cake for grown-ups and made a low sugar cake for the baby which was her first taste of cake. In hindsight, this is the sort of thing people only do for first babies- I suspect child no.2 will have quite a different experience.
