AIBU?

To ask how often do you “get away”? And with or without DC?

So today I booked a 5 day city break abroad in April (just me and DH without DC)! We also a have a night away early March...just the two of us to a restaurant we having been dying to go to (in another city so we’re staying over)? We will go on a staycation this year (camping/B&b style) for 10ish days with DC. I also have a spa weekend booked in June (with girlfriends) and a weekend away including concert with other girlfriends in July? Normal or not normal?? I literally had to sort something for each booking today so my mind is taken over with “weekends away” etc so thought I’d ask?
Aibu to have so much booked in February?

We usually go away for a week in autumn/winter (just come back) and two weeks in summer - both with our son.

Otherwise, we don't really go away as in overnight. DH went on a stag weekend last year and me and DS stayed at home. Then he went to a ruby wedding do of friends of his family. He went with SIL, BIL and MIL.
On that occasion, me and DS (4 at the time) were invited but I chose not to go as a formal sit down meal starting at 8pm with a 4 year old wasn't my idea of fun! In the end, I'm glad I didn't go as apparently, the hotel was like fawlty towers on a bad day Shock

We do go for evenings out together without DS when either my mum or SIL babysit.

To be honest though, it doesn't bother me - I'm quite a home bird and prefer to be home with DS at night.

Meh. It’s normal for you. It wouldn’t be for me. Not enough money for frequent breaks, no childcare for overnight breaks.

If I could have an overnight with DH that would be great but cannot imagine more than that. Not likely anyway.

I call stealth boast.

Try to get away once a year, in the uk. Only been abroad once in the last 15 years. Usually caravan or cottage or butlins ect.
Never had a night away without kids oldest is 13. I could get a babysitter I just can’t afford it andndont have anybody to go with anyway.

We go away as a family a few times a year, maybe a weekend city break, a long weekend at a home in my dh’s family (passed down from dh’s GP so it’s owned collectively and free for us) and then maybe a weekend camping. Every few years we have a longer long haul holiday as my family are all abroad. Dh and I usually have a weekend or two away each without dc to visit friends or do whatever (I go travelling alone as don’t really care that much about a weekend with friends). We used to get a night or weekend away alone together as well but have another young dc now so isn’t really possible. So quite a lot but nothing too exciting or extravagant. Most of our time away is for work so when we can be, we like to be home.

@OnceUponAGiraffe not a stealth boast I am genuinely interested in what others do/don’t do! Most of my friends are similar I suppose. If mn is not here for these questions to be asked then what is it for?

Wow lucky lady. We got one night away for honeymoon last year and that was our lot

We travel to see family every year. Sometimes that is two separate trips, sometimes it is one long trip. It depends on what time of year we go because one family member lives in two places.

We only take a personal holiday once every few years. It’s just too expensive to go more often.

Never away without our children overnight but have been out to dinner once a month without them.

No, never had that frequency of childcare (when mine were young enough to need it). I think we went away together, child free, on 2 occasions (both for weddings), over many, many years.

Not complaining, IME, that would be what I would expect.

What’s normal to to might not be normal to someone else though op - why do you think people have as much disposable income to go on spa breaks, concerts etc?

It's not my/our normal.

We've been on 2 UK long weekends and abroad once, all with DC's who are 13 and 6.

We've had 2 nights "away" in a hotel for concerts just us and have a 3 day break coming up which was our Christmas present so I'm looking forward to that!

We get a babysitter once or twice a year so we can go for dinner or something

My dh and I haven’t had one single date child free since we married 3 years ago. My mum decided she didn’t want to have our kids on our wedding night as she had a drink instead so I had to not drink and drive us all home (we have 4 dc) and then we took them all on honeymoon with us!

We could t even enjoy a dance and some time together at the wedding because my 1 year old was glued to me!!

Maybe one day.

That's a lot!

We have a one week summer holiday usually uk but sometimes France or Spain.

Then we usually do 3/4 days in one of the half terms, like London or somewhere else like Dublin or Edinburgh.

Then I have a night away with my girlfriends and me and dh may get a night away too.

But dh works away from April to July with the odd weekend at home so that impacts on what we can do.

Last holiday was last year interstate with dp for wwe. Dd stayed at grandmas

Every school holidays she spends about a week at grandmas too.

So while we dont go away as such we get a break for parenting every couple months

I’ve been away twice with my DH without kids; both times were for 2 nights abroad and it was lovely! My kids got to an age where a family member felt ok to look after them. More often I’ll go away with friends and leave the kids with DH. Couple of times a year, maybe. I tend to work during school holidays, so we have one 2 week family holiday in summer and then quite a few weekends away in the caravan.

why do you think people have as much disposable income to go on spa breaks, concerts etc?

@NCforthis2019 because some people do!! I know some don’t...but some do! And I am well aware that my norm and someone else’s are two different things. I just asked a question!

The last time I had a night away without dc was 4 years ago. It was for my birthday and we went to london for the weekend and then onto the Harry Potter tour 😊

We go camping a few times during the warmer months. Sometimes a weekend. We do a week in the holidays too.

Never, ever without the kids. None of the GPs are nice enough to help TBperfectlyH.

DH and I have had 2 nights away (together, 2 seperate weddings) in 11 years.
I work away overnight once a week usually *unavoidable, I have an office in my home town and one in London, my boss is based in London and he likes me to come and work with him a couple of days a week usually.
DH will take the kids to his parents a few times a year, for 2-3 nights and I tend to not go with them.
I have a couple of girls weekends / overnights a year whereas DH might go to europe for 5 days with his pals every 4 years or so?

We like to spend time together/ with the kids when we're all off, I work during term only so that we can enjoy our holiday home and also be with the kids. i appreciate that we're lucky (and that this sounds quite sad and co-dependent)

We generally have a few trips planned ahead.

However bought a new house recently which is undergoing a big renovation. So tight for time and money.

I do have a long weekend abroad with friends in spring booked. Then in summer me and DH have two and a half weeks in USA visiting my family.

DC are grown up now so no childcare issues Grin

I have an annual long weekend with friends for a long standing event.

DH and I, 2012, before DS2 was born. My friend had an injury which meant that she couldn't do the weekend planned so she offered to look after DS1.

I'd love to do something with DH, but family aren't a viable option and friends have their own DCs so it's just logisticly awkward.

I'm a lone parent of 4 and haven't been away from my DC in 7 years. We are having a week away (UK) in May and another UK weekend away in October.

Over a decade... I'm a single mum. DS is just about to go on a school trip, and I am going to a posh hotel on my own for the night. I am so excited. I shall eat a posh meal, read a book in an armchair by an open fire, have posh breakfast, go for a country walk, and there will be no washing up.

Never had a night away from our children, other than due to hospital stays. We never went on holiday without them.
