AIBU?

Or did she overreact?

DM rang me earlier sounding really distressed and crying. I thought she was going to tell me somebody had died in the family or something along the lines of.

Anyway.. she went on to say that our family dog had chewed a small part of her sofa whilst she was at work.

Totally out of character for him but she had left him with his squeaky ball and it had become lodged under the sofa, hence why he had chewed to try and get it.

She knows that he gets possessive over these types of toys and that he can't be left alone with them but still left him alone with it before she left the house.

AIBU to ask if she totally overreacted and to ask why people get so distressed over the most trivial and material of things? ConfusedConfused

Maybe she had a bad day? Perhaps she's in need of sleep? Sometimes the small things get to us, when we are not 100%. Is this unusual for your DM?

I called DH from work one day last week in floods of tears because the printer had jammed.

I didn't really care about the printer, the bloody thing jams all the time, but I was ill, tired, stressed out....it was the thing that finally pushed me over the edge!

Perhaps your mum had just had a shit day.

I also find that I tend to be even more upset when something is my fault too as instead of being rational, reasonable and forgiving I hate myself for being daft too!

Hard to say without knowing your mother really.

Is she short of money? I think if you were and something like that was permanently damaged and you couldn't afford to replace it then it would be very upsetting.

Remind yourself it's just dm's ddog now as you have moved out.
Before she asks for financial contributions towards a new sofa!
Ddogs are bloody awful at times!!

I was with her all morning before she went to work in the afternoon.

She's now saying she wants to get rid of the dog, we've had him 6 years and he's never done anything like this before.

I would be genuinely gutted if something happened to my sofa! I haven't finished paying for it and couldnt afford a replacement. It's my favourite place in my house. It means a lot to me. I would be in tears too
