AIBU?

People who can't accept that you don't love the things they do.

AIBU to be annoyed when people refuse to accept that something isn't for me?

A friend adores camping and is going on a camping holiday with a small group later in the year. I said how lovely. Have a wonderful time. She says you should come with us. I said you know camping isn't my thing but I'm looking forward to hearing about it. Cue a long rant/speech about the joys of camping and how wonderful it is and that I shouldn't let my first experience put me off.

I had the same when I read a book that a friend recommended which I didn't love but said it was an interesting read. This resulted in another conversation practically demanding that I admit how wrong I was.

Does anyone else know someone like this?

I don't have a friend like this but I do have associates who have about camping and caravanning holidays and tell me I'd love it. Mmm, no I wouldn't. They then tell me how I really would.

It does get awkward listening to them tell me what they think I'd like when there's nothing on earth that would move me to do these things. It is annoying that they are telling me as if they know me better than I know myself. Grrrrrr.

Camping is awesome though once you’ve got the hang of it....

I'm sure that it's great fun if you're the camping type, SaucyJack, but I'd rather never have a holiday again than spend one camping.

I have the opposite. We love camping my Mum goes on and on about how we should go abroad. We don't want to. Every. Sodding. Year.

Apparently my children are missing out...they don't think so.

Some ppl just can't accept others are different from them or like different things I find. It's very frustrating.

YANBU. I once made the mistake of mentioning that I don't like The Beatles and my friends DP spent half an hour insisting that "everyone" likes them, that I "must" like some of their songs (I don't) and repeatedly demanding to know why I was "lying" about not liking them! She simply couldn't accept it.

I love camping but I know what you mean. Good for you that you know what you like and arent swayed though! I have a friend who often tries to join in things she blatantly hates just so she doesn't feel she is missing out... camping is one of the things she tried to join in with and I've never seen anyone more miserable!! And it wasnt basic camping either it was glamping which we organised thinking it would be a bit better for her to join... she absolutely hated it.
So dont be persuaded... some people just do not like camping!!

I always get people trying to tell me I'd love bingo, computer games, and The God Delusion if I just gave them another chance....and these are all things I very much hate.

If someone's tried something and wrote it off then fair enough. I've got a try anything once mentality so struggle with people being closed minded. However I wouldn't waste my time trying to convince people otherwise

I guess it's kind of sweet that people want to share their love for things with you?

Sympathies, StreamingBanners. That's just as infuriating as the other way about, even more so when it comes from your own Mother, who really should know better by now.

i find it annoying when people bang on about how wonderful bacon butties are, you don't know what you're missing, yum yum etc. oh, ffs, i used to eat the sodding things before i learnt about the disgusting meat trade years ago and became a veggie as a result.

Sweet isn't the word I'd choose to describe it. Patronising and infuriating do. I'm happy to listen to them talking about their latest camping trip but I don't appreciate them believing than they know me better than I know myself. Apparently my first camping experience didn't count because it was in a very well equipped camping ground. If I like my comforts I'm hardly going to like camping any better without a real shower and having to clean my own shit up, or whatever campers do with it. They like very basic camping.

I'm with you op, I've actually never been camping but it doesn't appeal to me what so ever! Each to their own isn't it, your friends could do with repeating that moto!!

Reminds me of an episode of Couples Come Dine with Me, where a couple hosted in a caravan park, and at the end they asked, "so who would love to live in a caravan?" One woman said no sorry not for me. The rest of the week the couple were awful to the woman, snidey comments and marking her poorly. All because she said she didn't want to live in a caravan!

'I've got a try anything once mentality so struggle with people being closed minded.'

I think it's to do with how well you know yourself.

Apparently I'm WRONG because I don't find Father Ted funny. Not just odd or unusual but WRONG. All the comedy experts have declared it funny so it must be funny. I am wrong to think its not funny.

It isn't bloody funny to me!! I attempted to do a "well it is funny to some people but not me" and I was still wrong

That's awful, Arrivederci. Poor woman. They shouldn't have bothered to ask if they weren't willing to hear a no.

Camping so isn't awsome.
Sitting round a lovely campfire, toasting marshmallows? Fabulous. I can do that on a beach or in my garden. And then go home to a hot shower and a soft bed.
Everything else involves damp, cramped, smelly, uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, inadequate washing and cooking facilities, no plan B when it pours with rain and hayfever on tap. I love the outdoors, the countryside, walking, wild swimming, sunrise and sunsets in wilderness. But you don't need to camp for any of these.

Lol I read your thread title and thought “camping!” before even opening the thread!

I hate camping. I have done it when I was in the military so very basic camping. I’ve done it since with airbeds, glamping in a yurt and I still hate it!

I’ve got a comfy bed, shower and loo at home. IMO holidays are supposed to be better than what you have at home so why would I camp when I can stay in a lovely hotel or B&B?

I don't think it's closed minded to not want to try

  • eating grubs. I'm a little squeamish and have too active an imagination
  • anal sex. One way traffic.
  • caving, I'm claustrophobic.
  • a coach holiday to Spain. Spain is great but I couldn't travel that far in a coach.

It isn't closed minded, its self awareness.

I do love camping though 😂

It would be a dull world if we all liked the same things!
Whenever I get together with a group of school friends they say how fun it would be to all go camping with our partners and kids. No thank you. I hate camping too.

I keep being told I will love center parcs and need to try it before I can say I won't. I feel claustrophobic just thinking about it, but people insist until you have to tell them everything you think you would hate about it and then they're cross you were rude about something they enjoy.
