Will my car break?

DP bought me a car. It's currently sat in a communal car park and has been since Christmas. The engine has been started a few times.

DP went down to start the engine tonight and it just grumbles and won't start (best way I can describe it) and no fuel will go in (no revs). He thinks the battery is dead.

I know nothing about cars (if you can't already tell) so no idea what problems it could have for sitting out for 2 months and not being drove.

Anyone have knowledge?

It needs running for a while to keep the charge in the battery. Normal driving is usually enough but if the battery is old and the car stands for a while (or you leave lights etc on or alarm goes off repeatedly) it can deplete to nothing and no longer charge up (mine did so standing over Christmas one year). In which case it needs a new one. Why are you , or him, not driving it?

Sell it and get one when you can drive is my suggestion.

Sounds like the battery has no charge, you can get chargers from supermarkets for about £15 or so.

The other potential issue with it not moving, could be the brakes seizing on. When you get the engine running you might need to rock the car forwards and backwards to unstick them.

Can noone take you out in it or drive it for you? Assume it is taxed and insured. Unless you can jump start it you may struggle to get the battery changed easily.

Yes, battery will be flat. Cars do need to be driven otherwise it will keep happening. Is there a family member you can out on the insurance until you pass your test?

Yep. Sell it and buy another when you’ve passed your test. I know you won’t though.

But what you definitely need to do is get yourself booked onto a car owners maintenance course. It’s very clear neither of you have the foggiest about cars (or you wouldn’t have let it sit for 2 months!) and you will end up costing yourself a fortune due to poor upkeep and not recognising funny sounds etc. Very important you do this.
