AIBU?

To want to sob because of this mouth ulcer

I've got a bloody great ulcer on my tongue and it's so painful. Eating and drinking is agony and I honestly just want to sit and sob. How long do ulcers take to heal?

Neat vodka helps (ideally straight from the freezer).

Usually about 4 to5 days and unfortunately there's nothing much you can do about them, sore wee beggers though.

About a week. Get some bonjela or anbesol if its really sore.

Corsodyl mouthwash will help it heal too.

Have you tried iglu? It's amazing for mouth ulcers, takes the pain away immediately. It's pretty rank when you first put it on - it's a paste that reacts with your saliva to form a barrier over the ulcer but honestly it's amazing stuff. I was on medication for a while which gave me multiple mouth ulcers at once and it saved my sanity.

You have my sympathies! I get a lot of ulcers and they’re miserable, I feel your pain. I’ve found the best thing for them is gargling with warm water and salt - you can get stuff from the pharmacist to numb them, but it’s only temporary whereas regular salt water heals them much quicker.

Neat tcp dabbed on it, it stinks but usually zaps them pretty quickly. Hope you're feeling better soon.

I bought some iglu today and it's not touched it at all. Sadly I have no vodka either.

I'm always getting them. Igloo or the bonjela stuff that you paint on are good. Also ibuprofen for pain. It's about 4 days before it feels normal.

Get some Anbesol liquid. Best thing ever!

I don't like the iglu paste stuff either, it feels horrible in the mouth.

ANBESOL is your friend. It’s a liquid and it numbs. Very good stuff.

i find iglu useless. It clumps around near the ulcer but never covers it, and it makes me feel sick. Calgel or bonjela are best. And avoid toothpaste with sodium laurel sulphate in as it exacerbates them.

I had a terrible one on my tongue in an awkward place last year so I know how hot w painful they can be.
I found gargling salt water helped, and orabase tastes horrid but also helps - especially on overnight.

Try a dispersible aspirin on it.

Salt.
It will make you drool but SO worth it.
Question is why are you getting ulcers? For me it was an allergic reactions sodium laurel sulphate in most toothpaste.
Sorted that and not had one for 10 years.

Do you have dispersible Asprin? Put a tablet directly on the ulcer and your saliva will dissolve the tablet in your mouth. Pain free for maybe an hour or so. It's the only way I can eat when I get them.

@TrainSong beat me to it.

My bad ones were due to SLS in toothpaste as well.
Horrible things - second the Anbesol

Anbesol. I remember using some of my DS the same time he was teething and I ran out of bonjela. Best thing ever. Also drinking lots of tea. I'm sure my granny told me to put a cool damp tea bag on ulcers.

Definitely look into it if you get a lot frequently. I had loads when I was anemic.

I used to be a chronic sufferer and was on a clinical trail at one stage and tried most things both on and off prescription over the years.
Orabase worked for me most of the time but it is difficult to get into place properly. It is a paste that sits on the ulcer - get it right and it stays put and protects the ulcer. You need to try to get the area as dry as possible then smear it on.
Corsodyl mouthwash can help. Some people find hydrocortisone pellets help as well- they never did much for me. Never found any of the local anaethetic gels any good either.
If it is very painful, then take some of your usual painkiller. If it doesn't heal see a dentist.

I hate them, so painful, and despite the pain I can never stop myself from running my tongue over it!

YANBU. Ulcers are horrible. I accidentally bashed one with my toothbrush once and burst into tears which I never do.

Anbesol is v good. Flowers

Anbesol liquid.

Use a cotton bud to target the ulcer site.

It should take about a week to completely heal.

Put salt on it. It will sting like a buggar for a few minutes then you'll have relief. Use a salt mouth wash three times a day after and it'll go well it works with mine
