To wonder why Sajid Jarvis was so quick to remove Shamima Begum’s British nationality

But has done nothing about removing Asma Assad’s? Asma Assad is a dual British-Syrian National, so why not deprive her (and her kids) of British nationality? I can’t quite believe that the government hasn’ Done this. Why on Earth not?

Nothing has been done about Jack Letts, who is a dual British-Canadian citizen and currently in a Kurdish prison for fighting with ISIS.

Nothing has been done about Samantha Lewthwaite, widow of one of the 7/7 bombers and now one of the world's most wanted terrorists, accused of masterminding the deaths of over 400 people.

SB is an easy target, that's why. Who's more a threat, a child bride or the wife of a dictator with chemical weapons? It's been done to appeal to the populist vote and unfortunately it has support (even though it's blatantly illegal under international law).

Because she’s a terrorist scumbag who left here to join ISIS killing people in Syria? Fuck her, to be honest.

She's a British terrorist scumbag.

Low hanging fruit. Just because she's the first doesn't make it wrong.

YABVU

For fucks sake. All this support for her but thankfully only on here makes me feel sick.

I'm amazed they've not tried to justify how. Given she has as much claim to Bangladeshi citizenship as I do and I'm not aware of any other claims (Dutch - is her marriage even recognised?) .
And even if she did have a claim on Bangladeshi citizenship is that really what we as a country want to do? Leap in quick and dump our scum on others on a technicality. if you snooze you lose.

She's not the first, just the first to be left stateless in violation of our own laws.

So yes, that does make it wrong.

populist move and easy prey. nothing else otherwise lots of others would have been stripped of their passports too.

This is getting boring. who is supporting her?

Report

Posturing. Distracting from Brexit. Trying to make the HO look good after the (ongoing) Windrush scandal.

Politics.

What are the implications of being stateless by the way? In general, as well as in this situation.

Sajid Javid would like to be the next leader of the Conservative Party.

Yep. And he probably has an eye on a future Tory leadership race as well.

He wants to be seen to have acted tough on her. I am sure he knows that there is every chance that his decision will be overturned in the courts but then he can hold up his hands and say, "Not my fault." I do wonder if the way he is treating her is, in part, because he is from a Muslim family and feels he has to overcompensate to win over Tories - and others - who are automatically suspicious of him because of this.

@RedWineIsFabulous No one is supporting her. What people are doing is speaking out about what appears to be a violation of her rights. And if they can do that to one person they can do it to the rest of us.

You can despise someone's (alleged) crimes, but still respect the rule of law.

Report
Annandale · 22/02/2019 16:11

Because Sajid Javid wants to be prime minister and is completely untrustworthy. He knows it's illegal and will get slapped down by the courts, while he can pose with seriousface about how he is being stopped from implementing the will of the people by those pesky judges.

Support for her? I think she's quite likely to be a dangerous terrorist and I want her deradicalised and under surveillance. But who the fuck wants a Home Secretary whose attitude to the law is to treat it like a handy piss bucket?

Report
RedWineIsFabulous · 22/02/2019 16:11

All I can say is thank fuck your dear beloved lefty friend Diane Abbott isn’t Home Secretary.

Makes my blood run cold just thinking about it.

In order that the decision to allow her to remain a British citizen is carried out by the judiciary system and not the Government. The HO knew Bangladesh would deny she was their citizen, that she would appeal and it would/will be upheld.

By kicking it into the long grass, the HO (SJ) look like they are 'taking a stand' but they are merely manipulating the population and going for the public vote. They are also distracting from Brexit.

She will be allowed back to the UK (because legally she is allowed to be) but it'll be under the cover of darkness and under-reported, as there will be some other story hitting the headlines by that time.

Distraction, timing, to get the Brexiters riled up about immigration again, to overcompensate for Tory party anti-Muslim issues in his own bid for leader? So many reasons. None to do with her being more of a threat than others in similar situations.

FamilyOfAliens · 22/02/2019 16:17

Well I’ll be interested to find out if he’s able to carry out that threat once a legal challenge is launched.

Someone on another thread said it reminded them of Ed Balls sacking Sharon Shoesmith on TV - she was awarded shitloads of compensation some years later.

I'm against the principle of removing someone's citizenship. If they can do it to one, they can do it to all.

They should try her if she has commit a crime.

He needs to ‘look’ good because he absolutely isn’t. He’s awful. Self, self self. She’s in the media. Even my 9 year old knows her name. So an example has to be made. Rightly or wrongly. Nothing illegal about it if she’s Bangladeshi (and possibly Dutch).

Precisely this. He's grandstanding and showing off to the knee-jerk brigade who are baying for her blood.

Sajid Javid wants to be prime minister
And this. He's a weapons-grade twat, second only in duplicitousness and overweening ambition to Boris The Cunt Johnson.
