I am glad that this monster has been named publicly. The idea that he would have been protected after murdering Alesha MacPhail made me sick. His picture is all over the news now.

I'm not sure how it benefits anyone now to know.

It's not about anyone benefiting...it's about him not being protected after viciously murdering a 6 yr old child. He does not deserve anonymity or an easy life.

Vile POS. I'd say worse but I'm on a work computer.

I'm confused though, because I've seen that picture at the top of the article before so how has he only just been named if previously shown?

His name has been out there on the internet for months.

Well he's only just legally been named. Now his name can be reported in the press and the entire country will know exactly who he is and what he did.

Clearly a severely damaged young man.

Us calling him a POS on here is going to help no one.

I hope that some understanding of why he got to a place where he did what he did will be sought to prevent another 16 yr old getting to that place to and another family suffering this tradegy.

You're right, it was very wrong of me to call the vile rapist and murderer of a child a POS, it clearly makes me as bad as him Hmm

Except she didn't say that, did she?

It has one very useful side effect - at the time, there were claims that the killer HAD TO BE one of the Syrian refugees on the island, as nobody else could possibly be involved in such a hideous crime and the 'only' reason it was being kept quiet would be to protect Muslims/Syrians/foreign men.

Many tweets to this effect were being hastily deleted last night as more revealing his name and photograph were appearing.

He won’t last long in prison. I feel so sorry for both families. Horrendous.

It is bloody frightening that a child of 16 has carried out such a violent and heinous crime.

Report
CallMeRachel · 22/02/2019 14:11

I think naming him will possibly harm his mother, who actually inadvertently reported him in the first place.

On the other hand, the benefit of naming him will be useful to find out his childhood history to see if there were any warning signs or red flags.

It sounds as if it's been a particularly brutal murder, what made him do such a horrendous thing?

Understanding why may help prevent something similar happening in the future. I hate to say it, but see cannabis use and porn featuring in what I'm reading already. In a young developing mind that's never good.

The thing is though, what about his family? I know nothing about his background and how he ended up doing what he did (which is one of the most appalling crimes I have come across) but what if he has younger innocent siblings? What about the rest of his family? Naming him will have far more impact on them than it does him.

I can't see why any of us need to know his name. It is of no benefit to me and given that he will be in jail for a long time anonymity will not protect him. It just seems to me that it's simply satisfying people's nosiness to know who he is.

I appreciate that this you can argue that this could apply to all criminals but I think with a crime of this nature being committed by a minor the family are likely to be affected more than in other cases. I really genuinely hope he has no siblings whose lives will be made a misery even if they move far away from the area (which may have protected THEM if he had kept his anonymity).

In Scotland he is an adult at 16.

Most people aren’t actual adults at 18.

I also saw the people stir up racial hatred saying he was a Muslim and refugee on social media. By naming him it shuts those morons up.

How did his mother, “inadvertently report him”?

Report

Everyone on the Isle of Bute already knows exactly who he is, so life is already ruined for his family.

As I said, it would have been insane to protect his identity after the horrific murder he committed.

Yes I'm aware everyone on the Isle of Bute knows. That's why I made the point about moving away - now everyone in the country knows and the family have no potential escape.

How is it of benefit for everyone to know who he is? I genuinely want to know the answer to this question. I don't think there is one.
