AIBU?

To think £250 on gas and electric is far too much?

I'm currently paying £250 a month for gas and electricity on a 4 bed semi detached pretty standard house. Aibu to think this is crazy high.

What are others paying and how can I reduce this

I pay that in 3 bed semi. Older property with high ceilings and I like it hot!

Are you paying off a debt?
Is this based on actual meter readings?
When is the last time you checked/changed your tariff?
Do you have any underfloor heating? Or a hot tub?

Not paying any debt.

No underfloor heating, or hot tub.

We rarely have the heating on.

That is based on latest meter reading!

Oh I forgot as well...
Do you have cavity wall insulation?
What's your loft insulation like?
What temp do you wash at?
Do you use a tumble drier?
How do you heat your house gas or electricity? What temp do you get the home to?

We pay £130 a month in a large 4 bed detached property, DH works from home so heating on all day, 3 young DC including a newborn so washing machine/tumble dryer on constantly... £250 seems absolutely insane.

Was the meter reading correct when you moved in?
Is it a dial meter or digital display meter?

Yes cavity wall.
Loft was done/ improved just before winter.
New combi boiler this year.
I generally wash at 30°c but do use the tumble dryer a lot.
Gas combi boiler.. with hive on eco... So usually 21

Yes it's a lot. Is that based on actual readings? What sort of tariff? Have you taken your usage and done a price comparison?

I pay £45 a month for both,
big 2 bed house, 2 adults and baby

Are you getting actual meter readings or are they estimated? That seems very high - we pay about 100 for gas and electricity for a 4 bed house. We have good insulation too.

I'm £93 a month in a big 3 bedroom where kids leave doors etc open all the time right next to thermostat sending the heating soaring!! I'm due a refund of approx £300.

We have lived here 10 years.

So it's not an incorrect meter reading.

Do you have TRVs
Do you have cavity wall insulation
Do you have loft insulation
Do you have floor insulation
Do you have double glazing
What does the thermometer in your house (NOT the thermostat) read at 7pm
Is your hot water tank insulated
Do you turn everything off at the wall at night

What is your annual usage? It should tell you on a bill. You can then use that for a price comparison

We are 4 bed detached. We have cavity wall insulation and hive. We have the heating on a lot as there is often someone home.
I’m terrible for leaving lights on.
Ours is less than half that amount

We pay £180 a month in winter and £130 a month in summer. Means it averages out at £150 a month.
That’s a 4 bed detached, 2 preschoolers and hearing on lots as at least 1 person is always at home.
Plus 5 loads of washing and tumble drying a week.
I have the highest gas and electric bills out of all of my friends so I’m shocked yours is higher.

£97 for 4 bed detached here. We do keep it colder than yours but I can't see how we could get close to spending that much...

£88 per month. 3 bed detached house, built in the 90s with GCH, gas hob & electric oven. On a fixed rate tariff with Engie, who I cannot fault for customer service.

Cavity wall insulation and increasing the amount of loft insulation made a big difference to our bills.

Op won't have a hot water tank with a combi boiler
