To ask what's a small joy of being an adult you didn't expect?

Not at all to dismiss the hard times being had by people on the companion thread, but so we all don't end up with Monday-itis... what are some small joys you have discovered come with being an adult?

Some of mine are:

  • We have a tea cupboard. It is a little skinny cupboard not much good for anything else and houses all teas, coffees, cocoa making things etc. It is organised not by category but by frequency of use, and it gives me a little burst of pleasure every time I open it.
  • I worked out why our washer dryer was shrinking and felting everything in sight BY MYSELF, with the manual, determination, and extended experimentation. I was so overjoyed I told our mutual friend who looked at me like Hmm... but I do a lot of laundry.
  • Having pets. The picture attached was the morning after an eye watering emergency vet bill... FFS. But look at his little face!
  • Haggling - and the satisfaction of a good deal well done. Channelling Del Boy gives me immense joy, especially when the other party is a fellow Del Boy and you can have a bit of fun with it.
  • The slow realisation that I can actually make my own decisions without anyone my mother needing to approve. And that I don't need to be a Nice Girl all the time.

I can eat whatever I like, whenever I like. As a legendary fussy eater who is still quite fussy and who still has texture issues with many foods, this is something I have treasured since I left home. I have never cried over a meal since then.

It is ok to say no. The sky won't fall.

Coffee. Bloody marvellous invention.

Never having to eat liver. Big joy, this one!

I can stay up reading for as long as I want.

I can paint my house as many mad colours as I please.

The freedom to eat cake for breakfast and no one to tell you can't (not that I do this often, but just knowing that if I wanted to, I could makes me very happy)

Earning my own money and spending it on things I like.

Not having to wear a uniform! (admit this doesn't apply to everyone but I always think workplace uniforms tend to be far more practical than school uniform)

Yes! Cats. I wanted a cat. DP wanted a cat. Therefore, we got a cat without anything my disapproving anti-cat Mother could do.

I get that feeling when I do something like staying up late when it’s my turn for a lie-in, and then scoffing a tub of ice cream that I bought with my own money and can have it if I bloody want it. As a child the ice cream would have been probably non-existent, and it would have been lights out and keep myself silent once my mum went up. Now I just say “ah I think I’ll stay up and watch this Scandi Noir thing” and I CAN! When I grab the ice cream tub out of the the freezer, the feeling is just.... yeah! 💪🏼

Going to bed whenever I want.
Spending the weekend in bed/in front of the TV.
Having pets - always wanted them but parents never allowed indoor animals. I now share my bed with a husband and two babycats.

Yes to bedtimes and food freedom!

Thank you for the kitty admiration. His name is Popcorn - or Monsieur Popcorn, when he's feeling French. This is his evil companion.

The older I get the less of a people pleaser I become, it's very liberating!

Also deciding when I go to bed.

Being able to eat exactly what I like.(According to budget of course) I just had smokey peppered squid rings and salmon jerky for lunch.

I never have to eat boil in the bag fish with cheese sauce again.

I wouldn't eat that every day, it'd be a little pricy, but it's nice to know that I can have anything that takes my fancy.

I will never have to go to school again, unless I want to. I didn’t particularly enjoy secondary school and for many years after I’d left, I’d have recurring dreams about being back at school with my peers. At some point I’d realise that I didn’t have to stay there, and walk out.

No more physics lessons! No more harsh, sarcastic comments from the French teacher! No more bullies! No more cross country runs in the freezing cold! I’m 37 and still grateful.

Yes, no more PE. That's probably the best thing about being an adult.

That it is normal and “okay” to have your privacy, and to not expect people to just start rifling through your belongings (Mother!Angry).

Eating whatever I damn well please and not being forced to eat food I am allergic or intolerant to because I was labeled fussy!

Getting home after work, putting my pyjamas on immediately and sitting in front of Netflix for as long as I please rather than going out drinking and wasting my money Grin

Ooh, your evil companion looks like my evil companion!

I like not ever having to have brussels sprouts if I don't want them, being able to go into a shop and buy any chocolate bar I want, whenever I want, and the unexpected joy of buying matching tea towels and oven gloves.

I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to get up and go and do stuff whenever I want - like, if I fancy dessert I'll just go out, jump in the car at midnight and go to Tesco, buy a load, come home and sit and eat it in bed. I love that freedom.

And pets for me too.

When sprouts are passed around the table and I can sat 'No thank you, not for me' without there being a bloody scene.

Last week I bought the kids some sweets as a treat and scoffed the bloody lot without them even those sugary devils had entered the house.

Yes, Yes and thrice yes to pet owning.

OMG yes, not having to go to school, and never having to do another exam in my LIFE, and never having to do PE ever again. Omg yes.

Being able to buy the good quality version of an item that I actually want, not a cheaper version that's fairly close, because I know I'll be able to use it for long enough to justify the money (rather than outgrowing it/losing interest etc).

Being able to wear what I want every day.

Tbh I occasionally have moments just walking down the street or on the tube where I'm amazed by the fact I can organise my own life and get myself from A to B.
