Dd has just turned one and I’ve had social services on my case that she is over weight.

I’m not the best with her food but I’m pretty strict on her eating relatively healthy so I’m wondering where I’m going wrong.

Well, my little boy is 13 months, and I'm constantly questioning what to feed him! However, he currently typically has along the lines of:

  • 9oz bottle
  • 1/2 cup oats with full fat milk (porridge) a plum and blueberries
  • portion of natural yogurt
  • sandwich of some kind / mushrooms on toast / cheese on toast and piece of fruit
  • rice cakes
  • spag bol / curry / lentil ragu / roast veg etc
  • 9oz bottle

He is on about the 80th centile and has been since birth. He is as tall as many 15 / 16 month olds we see at baby groups. He feeds himself and will never eat if he's not hungry - even if there's only one spoonful left. I wish I had his self control!

My DD is only 8 months but she has...

Breakfast - porridge and sliced pear/apple/banana OR 1 slice of toast with 1/2 an avocado/hummus/egg on top OR 1 weetabix with berries.

Lunch - soup and 1 slice of bread and butter OR sandwich (1 slice of bread cut in half) with tuna/cheese/hummus/chicken OR pasta with tuna, mayonnaise and veg OR fish fingers and salad. Usually she has cucumber sticks, strawberries, apple slices etc with it.

Dinner - pasta with veg sauce, salmon and rice and veg, chicken with veg. Usually she has a yoghurt afterwards.

She has milk too - usually 4 or 5 feeds a day still.

14 month old has porridge for breakfast. Lunch is marmite/cheese/peanut butter sandwich or omlette with cucumber sticks, slices of pepper, tomatoes, fruit etc. and a yogurt or leftover portion from last nights dinner. Dinner is whatever we have: pasta, shepherds pie, stir fry, curry etc.
We don't really snack so he doesn't but he might have banana or breadsticks in the afternoon.
He is still breastfeeding so I couldn't tell you how much milk he has. He feeds throughout the day on demand.

At just turned one?! They’re still self regulating their appetite and getting a fair bit of their calorie intake from milk. I can’t believe social services have even mentioned this!

I've had a horrible experience with HV's. DS was born on the 95th percentile and has stayed there throughout his first year. He's EBF and eats a huge variety of healthy food. I make everything from scratch and give him nothing processed. He's a very happy and content (chubby) baby. One time I was at the weight clinic the nurse quizzed me about what he ate. I listed off what he had to eat in the last 24hrs and she smirked and asked if I ever give him Greggs sausage rolls!! I truly think it's because I'm overweight she presumed I was feeding him rubbish.

Yesterday consisted off...

7am BF
Handful of shredded wheat and some berries

12md
1 scrambled egg & a slice of toast
Natural yogurt & strawberries

3pm BF
Banana

5pm
Soup & a savoury muffin
Satsuma

7pm BF

My LO is 15 months, he is quite tall but relatively lean. He eats:

Breakfast - 1 oatibix and 150 ml whole milk. Bit of fruit.

9:30 snack

Lunch - soup or bit of toast with 2 small portions of veg and a protein (cucumber, tomato, avocado, sugar snaps etc for veg and egg, cheese or chicken for protein) followed by fruit pot

3:30 snack

Dinner - small portion of what we are having or 2 x small pouches of food if he can’t have what we’re having and have nothing in the freezer. Followed by dairy based dessert (plain yoghurt or baby custard)

The snacks are usually fruit, veg, unprocessed protein or maybe some special flakes type cereal (if he’s really lucky he will get some Cheerios Wink)

It seems like quite a lot but he is always running about and I don’t give him any heavily processed fatty foods. It always surprised people when I say things like he’s never tasted chocolate etc

He also doesn’t like milk or fruit juice to drink, so that probably keeps some calories away but he does still have one breast feed a day.

Neverunderfed · 11/01/2019 21:46

He's still breastfed and feeds quite a lot overnight so...

0630 wake up
0700 cereal (normally Weetabix or similar) with whole milk, some strawberries, banana etc perhaps and water

Snack mid morning...maybe some raisins, some grapes, a biscuit puff thing

Lunch is normally omelette and cucumber or similar, pasta, sandwich, scrambled eggs, beans on toast etc

Breastfeed before nap

Maybe snack mid afternoon as morning

Dinner... whatever we are eating. Chinese takeaway tonight so some rice, noodles, prawns, sweet and sour chicken ball, duck in plum sauce 😂 but normally chilli and rice, chicken etc

Breastfeed to sleep

Feed a few times in the night

DS is old at 20 months but I’ve always given roughly the same. For example today (which was super pre organised as he gets looked after my my step MIL today and I always leave her his food)

We still breastfed so he has a fed when he wakes up
Breakfast- multi grain cereal, crackers and soft cheese, strawberries
Lunch- cocktail sausages, cheese, cucumber, breadsticks- then pomegranate/raspberries
Snack- raisins
Dinner- Mac cheese and tomatoes followed by yoghurt
He then also had a soreen bar before bed as well as another breastfed

I remember from 12-15 months It felt like DS ate almost constantly and was always looking for a snack! He is smaller though, we’ve only just moved up to 12-18 clothes and he still regularly wears 9-12. Haven’t had him weighed in forever

Report
mindutopia · 11/01/2019 21:48

Mine is 11 months. Today he had:

Breakfast- maybe 1-2 toast fingers and some yogurt
Lunch- bit of sausage (maybe like 1/3 of a sausage), spoonful of beans, blueberries
Snack- rest of yogurt pouch from breakfast
Dinner- salmon (like two bites), pasta, chomp on a bit of asparagus

Then maybe 3 breastfeeds a day plus however many overnight. He doesn’t eat mass quantities, but he’s 75th centile for weight and height.

Report
LaBelleSausage · 11/01/2019 21:50

DS is 13 months and below the 25th centile. Today he’s had
7am breastmilk
8am rice crispies
10am dates and sliced pear
11.45 cottage pie and peas followed by flapjack
1pm breastmilk
3pm buttered toast with marmite, snack sized sausage roll, cheese straw
5pm refused to eat his curry, so did him an emergency dinner of one of those microwave veg/rice bags with cheese and cut up cocktail sausage in, a handful of raspberries and all the full fat greek yoghurt in the house.
7pm breastmilk

He’ll probably wake up about 2am and I’ll end up breastfeeding him again

Thanks everyone, it’s seems to me that my dd doesn’t eat too differently to your babies other than maybe having too much milk.

Maybe you can spot something I can’t. She generally has:

8am - half a bagel thin with Philadelphia/ toast/ weatabix
a piece of fruit
5 ounces of milk

12 - one slice of granary bread usually with cheese and pickle/Philadelphia (if she hasn’t had it for breakfast)
another piece of fruit
5 ounces of milk

3/4ish - 5 ounces of milk

6.30 - spinach and cheese omlette/small portion of our home cooked pasta dish (always cooked from scratch)/ chicken and veg

7.30 5 ounces of milk

@SailAwayWithMeHuni its not necessarily food, how active is you child?

My dd isn't walking or crawling but bum shuffles everywhere. She has started eating more since she has got more active, and it will probably get more when she learns to walk.

14 month old, but been the same since about 11 months...

Breakfast : cereal with puree fruit plus 6-8oz milk

Pre nap snack : large yoghurt or fruit or fruit pot.

Lunch : mac n cheese/beans on toast or similar OR a heniz baby (1+) ready meal of we're out.

Afternoon snacks : soft crisps, fruit / fruit pots, cheese

Dinner : plate of whatever we have, could be spaghetti bolonese, chicken, stir fry, steak pie, wraps etc pretty much anything adapted to babys needs (mashed, less salt, minus ingredients etc) plus yoghurt, biscuit or ice cream for pudding

Supper : large yoghurt occasionally with fruit puree in.

Then 9-11oz of milk before bed.

99th percentile for height and weight, has been since about 4 months. Born on the 75th.

My DD (almost 1) is 98th centile (!!!) for height and 75th for weight. Or at least she has been when she's been measured previously, it's been a while!

A typical day might be:

Breakfast: Slice of toast with butter and marmite, half a banana
About 5oz formula

Lunch: Large slice of quiche, tomatoes, cucumber, a few bits of steamed veg, couple of handfuls of berries, half a dozen spoonfuls of natural Greek yoghurt.

Snack: Half a banana, small porridge bar

Dinner: Chunky veg chilli, couple of potato wedges, loads of steamed veg (she loves asparagus, carrot, broccoli etc), few slices of watermelon, more berries!

Bedtime: About 3oz formula

She doesn't really have enough formula so I give her a multivitamin. She has a dairy allergy so we're working through the milk ladder and haven't got to milk yet, but once we do I'll probably swap out the formula as she really doesn't enjoy it. We did BLW so she feeds herself and just has whatever we have - fajitas, spaghetti bolognese, chicken curry, etc etc. And sometimes she has fish fingers / chicken goujons if we've had something she can't have!

Today mine had a buttered finger cut off my toast and a couple of tablespoons of Greek yogurt with fresh raspberries. Approx an adult palm full of chicken curry and rice that was left over from last night. And he wouldn’t eat much tonight, just a few small slices of chicken and a quarter of a roast potato. Plus as much milk as he wants. I’m now wondering if I don’t feed him enough as other posters seem to feed more? He’s 70th centile though.

It doesn't look much different to be honest. In what context were social services involved with the baby? I'm not sure my baby has been "officially" weighed since he was about 9 months old. So no one would know how much he weighed to tell anyone else IYSWIM.

Report
SailAwayWithMeHuni · 11/01/2019 22:05

@Lazypuppy she doesn’t stop moving, constantly crawling around, cruising around the furniture, dragging her large toys around so she can climb up to things. We are regularly at baby groups/ soft plays where she is always on the go.

Could it be that she is sleeping too much. She goes down at 7until about half 6/7ish. Then an hour in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.

PPs are right about activity levels too - mine is a little whirlwind and literally never stops, she's been crawling and cruising at great speed for months now and I'm exhausted just watching her - hence why she eats quite a bit!

SandysMam · 11/01/2019 22:06

Were social services already involved with you and noticed he was heavy or did they get involved because of his weight?

Report
Cutesbabasmummy · 11/01/2019 22:07

Today my almost 4 year old has eaten:
Coco pops with full fat milk, a banana, a ginger bread man, a chocolate lollipop, a biscuit at playgroup, 2 mini steak pies with mash, roasted butternut squash and broccoli, jelly, heinz Thomas the tank pasta and toast, raspberries and some mini animals biscuits. This is tons for him as he's a fussy eater and in the 9th centile.

@sar302 we went to a walk in clinic as she had a really bad cold and wasn’t sure if it had gone to her chest. They said it was viral but gave her a pump to help her breath as she was heavily congested. The next thing we know we have a letter saying social services are coming for a visit due to her weight.

Dd is 16 months but diet has been similar for a while now

Sometime between 4am and 7am bottle of milk (formula)

8am cereal, banana and sometimes half a brioche

9-10am a biscuit and fruit blueberries or similar

11.30am lunch sandwich and crisps / scrambled egg and toast / one of those pre made dish meals

2.30pm (after nap) another snack. Cheese/crackers /fruit

4-5pm when hungry dinner. Spag bol / waffles and fish fingers with beans/ what we had the night before. Basically a bowl of evening meal

6pm while watching in the night garden . Yogurt / fruit / ham/, Cheese/home made chips (if we have them) veg

7pm bottle of milk which normally gets finished by 8.30pm in bed

Dd has been eating since 5 months and always liked her food. At 12 months I stopped bf due to biting. Leading to that I only bf in the morning and evening. So I changed morning feed to bottle and then at 12 months both feeds a bottle. Dd is not overweight but very active (rolling from 5 months, walking by 9 months, now a Tasmanian devil)
