AIBU?

This is odd and entitled isn’t it?

I bought a friend with twins two large wooden toys for her children for Christmas. Not cheap and I knew they would be liked. I had them delivered straight to her as they were big. Tracking showed they arrived.

Christmas came and went and I heard nothing so I ventured to ask her today whether she had ever received them. Her reply “Oh, were they from you?”

No thanks, no “oh the mystery is solved!”, but she did say the twins love them.

It seems that they arrived before Christmas, she was out, her mother was in, mother opened the parcel straight away and put the toys in the nursery, and got rid of the packaging. There was supposed to be a note in with them saying Merry Christmas from me but if it was there it wasnt looked at and thrown away.

I asked my friend hadn't she wondered where the toys were from when she had arrived home and saw them. She said no! 😲

Please tell me I’m not being unreasonable by thinking that isn’t normal behaviour!

Did she assume her mum had bought them?

I think it probably is! If something appears in my house and I don't know where it's from, I might ask DH and ads, but I wouldn't do a ring round asking friends. It's just one of life's mysteries. No doubt the answer will become apparent at some stage. I hope she said thank you when it became obvious it was you, though?

Oddsocksandmeatballs, no I asked that!

Singlenotsingle, no she didn’t. No thanks, just that the twins like them.

Well she was rude not saying thank you, and I understand you feeling miffed. But she had no idea they were from you and during a very busy Christmas no one would text all the their friends and relationship to ask.

Friend didn’t even go and look at the packaging (in recycling in the garage) to find out where they were of if there was a receipt with a name on.

I once received flowers without a note and rang the florist so I knew who they were from. The little card had fallen off in the van!

I can see this happening at Christmas. Maybe give her the benefit of the doubt if it's out of character for her?

Her reaction is weird, though.

I can understand the mix-up but not to then thank you profusely is really off.

Baby brain.? How old are her twins?

I also think it’s weird that her mother is opening mail when she’s not there, but that’s none of my business! Her mother doesn’t live with her, was just visiting.

Plus they were Christmas presents not supposed to be opened until the day but they weren’t even hidden from the children, just put in use straight away.

I find it all very odd!

Why don't you just say, 'so is this your thank you, then?'?

Fusioluxe · 11/01/2019 14:24

I can only surmise that they have so much stuff that a couple of extra, albeit large, toys make no difference to them whatsoever!

the twins like them

She clearly does not!

Does she live in a mansion with a huge playroom for the kids? Because I would not welcome two large wooden toys in my house.

Are you 100% sure granny didn't claim credit for the much-loved toys appearing.
You might have caught your friend off-guard if she thought they had had come from her mum. Sometimes in the odd moment when someone surprises me I can come-up with an inappropriately vague response. A thank you note might/hopefully follow

Yabbers, not a mansion but a large 5 bed house. Plenty of room.

Well you now know who not to buy for next year. Very odd that she didn't thank you.

Yes I think that's weird. If she is on Facebook she could have taken a pic and asked who the kind giver was but it seems she took for granted that some new wooden toys had magically appeared as if from nowhere and not questioned it. That is strange to me and yes entitled.

We got some wine glasses for a wedding present that had no label (or it had fallen off and we'd been unaware) and so for the guests who we didn't know what they had given (they may not have as it wasn't requested that they did) we wrote thank you cards saying thank you for coming to share our special day yadda bla blah and then we said " We are sat enjoying a lovely glass of wine in our amazing new wine glasses and remembering our amazing day" and hoped that if the person who sent them got that it was enough to convey we were thanking them for the wine glasses but if they didn't not weird enough to write. Sorry that turned out a long anecdote Blush

Very weird that her mum opened parcels that weren't addressed to her and weren't sent to her house, in the run up to Christmas. And then on seeing it was toys, put them out on display? And didn't mention it? Surely at that time of year the chances of it being a Christmas gift are reasonably high, why the fuck would you open it, never mind give them to the kids without mentioning it to your DD?

Could she be a bit miffed at the size two large toys take up? I mean it’s definately odd not to wonder where they came from, and for her mum not to consider they might be an Xmas gift and all the rest of it, but maybe she just doesn’t thank you for them?
