to wish I'd bought one of these years ago

So I've just made myself poached eggs on toast for lunch using my new microwave egg poacher-which cost me the princely sum of 70p using a voucher-and it did the job perfectly, cleanly and soo quickly. If it hadn't been on special offer I probably wouldn't have bothered to try it out because I think mostly the old fashioned ways of cooking things is best, but I can see me and the kids getting a lot of use out of this thing. What cheap and cheerful gadget have you bought that's made your life that bit easier and made you wish you'd bought it years ago?

Ooh my potato ricer, definitely! No more mashing!

I didn't like mine, I felt like it made my eggs rubbery so o just got a dp that's good at making poached eggs, no effort required from me wink

I now have kitchen tweezers I think they are called, for turning things while trying or in the grill, absolute game changer. No more fiddling with forks at flipping with spatuals and splattering oils everywhere.

I don't even cook potatoes any more, frozen mash from Tesco, I hated the bloody ricer, burned me with mushy potatoes everytime.

The amazing avocado gadget.

I've been considering buying one of those Neverender, but my 3 teenagers have hollow legs, so I think all in all mashing the mound of tatties I have to cook is probably quicker for me.

One of those things Paul Hollywood uses for cutting bread dough. You can get a nice one with his name on for £££s, or a cheap one from Ikea and the like. Not only does it cut through bread dough, but it's useful for scraping things off a work surface, especially when you've been kneading a very sticky sourdough.

@NutElla5x which egg poacher is it?

Had friends try different ones with limited success, always keen to find one that works!

I bought a garlic press that requires no peeling of garlic, it presses the skin out. It has a little lever-flicker-thing to then expel the skin.

Not a gadget, but I only just discovered frozen chopped onions. Haven't chopped an onion since.

Coddled eggs?

AdaColeman Fri 11-Jan-19 13:43:22

Kitchen tweezers = tongs?

Cantdorightfromwrong Fri 11-Jan-19 13:43:47

@Drogosnextwife I believe the kitchen tweezers are called tongs grin

SarahET Fri 11-Jan-19 13:45:54

IKEA do a good garlic press where you don't have to peel the garlic

ChrisjenAvasarala Fri 11-Jan-19 13:46:16

What’s the difference between kitchen tweezers and tongs? Aren’t tongs a kitchen staple?

A really good knife sharpener. I've tried lots but this is the best: knife sharpener

I regularly do mashed potato for 6 people with a ricer, I find it much easier than using a masher.

We have one of those things that cores and segments an apple. Totally non essential but it gets used every day.

I've tried several gadgets to get lids off jars and the one that works best was from a local cheapjack shop. Its just a long thick strip of elastic and a plastic handle.
I found it on Amazon for £1.20;
Jar opener on Amazon

I poach eggs in the microwave in a mug (half full of boiling water) with a plate on top. 1min on 750 from the fridge is perfect.
