AIBU?

to be woken up every morning at 6am

To cut this short and sweet

Moved into area 3 years ago, just before 2nd DS was born. Nice quiet area, extended just to the point of uncomfortable. 4 bedroom terraced house semi-rural.

About 1 year ago, neighbour two door up at the end of the terrace, upgraded several cars from a mini-van to a 4x4 truck and a standard family saloon to a boy racer big exhaust.

The last nine months, said neighbour has taken work further away that now leaves him starting up either car at 6am if not earlier. Both cars are loud, the exhaust note for the boy racer car is not quite a sonic boom, but definitely a loud bass sound that other half and I can clearly hear at the back of the house.

Youngest DS, is woken up every morning, by either car. Regardless of “being quiet” from the neighbour. He’s been told about it, but ignoring it as people “being fussy”.

House is double glazed, rooms are decorated with names on and not going to change rooms around. But DP is up with DS2 from 6am every morning and this is now running into weekends, with neighbour working weekends now too.

Having seen other neighbours, we know its waking up about 10 plus of us in total.

Cars started up loud, but once woken up we can hear the boy racer car being driven away for a couple of miles at least.

ISBU to have to tailor my own lifestyle, around a neighbour, to be up at 6am with DS2 who’s “wired” after being woken up, he used to sleep in till 7am prior to this and hubby is taking most of this.

Before hubby looses his rag directly, can anyone suggest help

Can you all talk to the council?

Sounds really annoying, although I'm not sure what you can do about the neighbour?

"rooms are decorated with names on and not going to change rooms around. But DP is up with DS2 from 6am every morning and this is now running into weekends, with neighbour working weekends now too."

But if it was bothering me that much and there was potentially something within my control that I could do the improve things, I would do that?

Couple of days of redecorating and moving names on doors might be worth it?

Can you take your complaints (if there are 10+) to your Local Authority?

Does your Council/Local Authority have Night Hours rules (usually 11pm to 7am where we are). Environmental Health can, if they have done an assessment and find that there Noise Nuisance exists, issue an Abatement Notice.

Failing that can you get hold of (rent perhaps) Environmental Noise Monitor? These record noise levels and audio events, outdoors and are used by Local Authorities to complete noise assessments. Then, take neighbour to local magistrates court?

Shove an orange up the exhaust.

I would suggest that a couple of neighbours go round on behalf of all of you and request again that he not do this. If it's that loud I doubt changing rooms will help.

And then try council. I've just had a look on our council's website and I think they would act on this.

Check if the modifications are legal.

If they are, there's nothing you can do except help yourselves.

Not changing rooms because your names are on them, is one of the most ridiculous reasons I've ever heard Grin Grin

I thought you were joking at first Blush

If you all went to his front door together, unified, he might see he's got a fight on his hands if he doesn't start being more reasonable

Of all of you were to complain to council then you might get somewhere.

Report
bamboolzled · 11/01/2019 10:13

DP is fairly sure the exhaust on one is not standard, you can put and arm into it

The truck is just as noisey

Problem is when woken up DS2 wakes everyone up and like a livewire.

I can’t get back to sleep at all, DP takes boys down and manages to get some sleep with 2 jumping on him somehow.

Is 6am a reasonable time to commute ?

Very much a reasonable time to commute unfortunately. I left the house at 5.30 today 😴

....my dp commutes at 5am and my df commutes at 4am...I used to start my commute at 3am...yes its reasonable

to be honest if he has to go to work at 6am, he has to go to work at 6am - you can't stop him commuting at the time he needs to. However the question is whether you can stop him making so much noise. I agree with pp - you and your neighbours should go round and confront him in a group. Or contact the council.

My DD had this with a neighbour... he'd modified the exhaust and it was a horrendous boom, regularly woke her DC at 5am as he did shift work.

A phone call to the local Council and recording the sound did the trick. If enough of you complain, they will take action.

RiverTam · 11/01/2019 10:17

still not a reasonable time to be making that kind of a racket. And not a usual time to leave, however reasonable. I have never been woken at that hour by any commuter.

Illegal exhaust could be the way to go.

6 is a reasonable time to commute, but not a reasonable time to make a lot of noise.

snowie01 · 11/01/2019 10:18

people commute at all times, of course that is reasonable. I leave the house at 5.30am... I'd get a group of you to speak to him if he doesn't listen then maybe try the council.

Vehicles must conform to a maximum dB of sound from exhaust.

What time do you start work if the commute starts at 3?

huh?!?!
I am sure your neighbours would love to work form 10am to 2pm, but some people do have to earn a living?

I agree that neighbours should try to keep noise to a bare minimum, even more at 6am, but OP you are coming up with ridiculous points. If you are genuine, stick to basic facts, your names on the wall and neighbours working hours are not doing you any favour at all.

Queenofthestress · 11/01/2019 10:29

@Zucker I clocked in at 4am, you had to be in early to get the machines warmed up and online before the first batch of chemicals came in (lab tech), same reason my dad starts so early too, we're in the same profession

My dp is a lazy butt and went into security because he wanted to sit on his bum all day Grin

See comment above re orange and change it to watermelon.

Neighbour sounds like an entitled prick.

How about some good old charivari - neighbours banding together at 2am with assorted implements to keep him awake?

You’ve got your answer here, complain to the council. If you can put in a group complaint with your other neighbors it’ll really strengthen the case. The issue isn’t leaving the house at 6am, the issue is leaving the house at 6am in a car with modifications which make it considerably louder than the average vehicle. The noisy neighbor can’t be reasonably asked to change his job or work hours, but he can either get a quieter car or make adjustments to his current one to make it quieter.

I get up at 6am and if I have a long commute I might be in my car by then. I don't think that is remotely unreasonable. How are shift workers supposed to get to and from work?

However, I agree with PP that the modifications are the way to go if you wish to escalate. If the modifications are what is making the vehicles so noisy maybe it can be resolved that way?

Report
yumyumpoppycat · 11/01/2019 10:48

Yabvu with some of your comments (to the point where I also think you must be joking) but your neighbour is also being unreasonable to make loads of noise at 6 am.

....my dp commutes at 5am and my df commutes at 4am...I used to start my commute at 3am...yes its reasonable

This made me laugh somehow. I expected the next sentence to be "I got up before I went to bed" a la Monty Python Yorkshireman sketch Grin

OP YANBU I would be murderous if I was woken an hour before my alarm goes off. If 6am was reasonable to make that amount of noise it would be ok to sound a horn and start building works at that time. It's not.
