Two years ago my sister bought a cat. Her husband works shifts and she said it would be lovely to get a cat to keep her company, I thought nice idea.... the first year she had the cat I said sis what would you like for Christmas, got any ideas?! Sister says oh don’t worry about me just buy for my cat, I thought she was joking, but no she was serious. I asked again for any ideas as I do find her hard to buy for, it’s better to ask. Anyway she gave me some ideas then later on she said ‘your buying for my cat right?’ i say eh? You want me to buy for your cat and she said well yeah she’s my baby blah blah.

So I thought, bite the bullet just get her cat something, it will make her happy, so I did.

Now this year I have been asked to buy for her cat again.....

Every time I catch up there’s always a story about the cat. When my dd plays with the cat she always get told off by my sister, dd don’t do that, don’t sing too loud, don’t move too quick it will startle the cat. I have caught my sister shouting at my dd over the cat!!!! - tbh it’s doing my head in. My dd is good with pets and is very gentle with the cat, she doesn’t need to be constantly told off.

I can tell she is a bit obsessed with the cat. I don’t have pets so I don’t get it. But would you ask someone to buy for your pet??

I have a list of what the cat likes and doesn’t like.... I have spent half hr on amazon .... then logged out and thought I have too much sh&t to do...... plus I feel petty because of the way she snaps at dd.

Do I give in and buy the cat something??? Wwyd ???

I wouldn’t be buying a present for the cat...

Fevertree · 18/12/2018 23:50

Do you want to? If so B&m is good for cat bits like little toys and treats. Spend 3 or 4 pounds in thete job done, don't put too much thought into it!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/12/2018 23:52

Are you my sister?! I always buy presents for my friends cats. And send them Christmas cards from my cats to their cats!

MontyPants · 18/12/2018 23:54

No, this is ridiculous. She needs to get a grip.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 18/12/2018 23:54

Utterly ridiculous your sister is batshit

MrsTommyBanks · 18/12/2018 23:54

I buy for my DDs cat. He is a massive part of our lives (and would probably kill me if I didnt)
In return my DD buys for my dog and bird feeding station.
It makes us happy. Where's the harm?

TinyTwat · 18/12/2018 23:55

Do it, or don't do it. I wouldn't waste the headspace on it personally

Mia184 · 18/12/2018 23:55

Buy your sister or her cat a gift voucher from Zooplus or a similar place?

BaronessBomburst · 18/12/2018 23:55

Just buy a tin of tuna.

MrsTommyBanks · 18/12/2018 23:55

I also send birthday cards to DD from the cat.
And get Mothers Day cards from the dog.

Witchend · 18/12/2018 23:57

What about a fishtank? Grin

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/12/2018 23:58

I buy for my own dog, and possibly mils but we have a strong bond. I Wouldnt buy for anyone elses pet though.

Bear18 · 18/12/2018 23:58

Maybe because I am being told to do it and I don’t like how the cat consumes her life and she never asks how anyone is..... now I have to cater to a cat. Apparently the cat only likes certain toys .... I just feel so irritated..... just interested if it’s normal

What is the story? could she be struggling to get pregnant and her feelings are some sort of transference?

Bear18 · 18/12/2018 23:59

Ha witchend! You made me lol!

She obviously loves the cat and gets pleasure from it receiving a gift. A gift for her cat is really a gift for her anyway. We always send a packet of cat treats along with MIL’s gift and she sends a dog toy in return. It makes us happy to include our pets so I don’t see the harm.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 19/12/2018 00:00

Sorry but 🤣 and I'm a cat person! Think your dsis is taking it a little far.

Just bought our cats, dog and rabbit Xmas presents. Just Christmas shaped treats/ stockings from pet shop. Yes, I'm weird and I do have an actually child too but I didn't want to leave our pets out.

Bear18 · 19/12/2018 00:01

That’s interesting windinmyhair.....never thought of it from that angle.....

what I take from this thread is that you have a child and she doesn't. Is that right?

Buy her a present for the cat (a catnip toy is... like... £2 max?).

It'll make her (and the fucking cat) happy.

Where's the harm!

OF COURSE it's not equivalent to a child, and on some level she knows that.

MrsTommyBanks · 19/12/2018 00:02

You are not being told. You are being asÄ·ed. Different things surely?

FeckTheMagicDragon · 19/12/2018 00:02

My MIL sent us a Christmas card for us, and one for the cats :D!
I didn’t ask or expect it (she is fond of them though) but I thought it was sweet.
Get some cat treats and a feather on a stick. It harms no one and it will make her happy.

Bear18 · 19/12/2018 00:02

I dont think it’s strange if you buy your pet something but to ask people to do it is pretty cheeky 🤣

We get packs of dreamies for the cats from in-laws (they were here before DD after all haha) but the idea of requesting gifts for them is just Hmm

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 19/12/2018 00:05

Our cat gives & receives xmas gifts. I'd buy DSis Cat a packet of dreamies but leave very precise instructions as to what Mog can buy you in return.

BibiBlocksberg · 19/12/2018 00:06

Toddlerteaplease - same here, glad I'm not alone though hadn't thought of the cards, missed a trick there, must rectify that :)

OP, can totally understand your dilemma, no one likes to be told whom they 'have to' buy for be it human or animal.

Kitty Slave of some years here & can count on one hand the amount of times the felines have received gifts from friends.

V much appreciated when it does happen but certainly never expected or demanded.

If you do decide to go with a kitty gift, can recommend 'King Catnip' toys. Pets at home/pampurred pets stock them & cats do go mad for them as Catnip content is v strong.
