Mil refuses to come on days out with me and my children, including refusing to come to his birthday meal because she says she's not well and it would be too much for her. She recently refused my invitation to come along to Santa's grotto with us as it would be too much to wait in a queue.
Then yesterday she sent me a message and some professional photos to show that she had taken her PARROT to see Santa at a grotto! She had actually gone to a kids Christmas grotto and paid for her parrot to meet Santa and sit on his shoulder, and then paid for the photos hmm aibu to want to make this bird into a pie so she spends time with my kids instead?!

Agree with PPs - be as kind as you can. Maybe she really does have a hidden illness or is getting on and is having to deal with all the lovely things that ageing can bring.

HOWEVER, I just........ am not sure what to say. It's freaking HILARIOUS! grin grin grin A parrot! Professional photographs! What on earth must Santa have thought?! grin

I'd just go with it OP. You have many years ahead of you regaling your DCs with this story!

Sounds fine, I took a goldfish to the pub once.

Long story.

Fuck you cookery has really made me laugh, especially with no smiley face!

I don’t believe the parrot story though.

The OP’s MIL couldn’t be arsed to take her DGC to see Santa

Oh come on now, stop making things up. MIL wasn't taking the DC to see Santa in the first place, their mother was.

To be honest I don’t think it’s the GP place to have to take the kids to see santa . We go just with my husband and I. Are you supossed to squeeze in another 4 ( or six if parents are remarried ) adults into the tiny little room. So 6 adults so precious DC can see santa. Bizarre

That is bonkers. But you can't make someone want to spend time with you. Just distance yourself from her. Have people in your life who actually like spending time with you...maybe get a parrot.

Bloody hell thats bonkers
