To report my neighbour singing / humming?

It’s constant. Day and night. I’m starting to wonder if she ever leaves the house. I’ve been here since August and I am starting to lose the will to live.

The sounds of a strangled cat come from the flat above, yet strangely I’ve never seen her. As far as I am aware only a man named Derek lives there, and he also sent me a xmas card with only ‘from derek flat no 10’ Btw she’s definitely (I hope) not a ghost as I’ve heard them speaking. In fact, I can hear every time one of them yawns

Why would you report? Just talk to them.

Elphie54 Sun 16-Dec-18 22:30:40

Report for what??

HolesinTheSoles Sun 16-Dec-18 22:31:14

That would drive me mad. I would try to move somewhere with better sound insulation.

Better log it with 111 pet

Singing/humming is not illegal.

Gas them with a moped exhaust.

Singing/humming is not illegal.

Many things are not illegal that I'm sure you would want to stop, it's common decency.

emmagreen481 Sun 16-Dec-18 22:36:55

I’m sure it is illegal if they are doing it at night

PatricksRum Sun 16-Dec-18 22:38:17

Um, by the sounds of it, it's you who needs to leave the house. hmm

SaucyJack Sun 16-Dec-18 22:38:28

Report them to who? I don’t think there’s an equivalent of RIDDOR or the National Grid to regulate a decent standard of singing.

PunishmentSnart Sun 16-Dec-18 22:40:01

She might be a ghost.

Ghosts who hum can certainly yawn and talk...

AnneTwackie Sun 16-Dec-18 22:40:35

Burn her with fire

KittensAndChristmasCake Sun 16-Dec-18 22:41:47

Gas them with a moped exhaust.

Of course singing not illegal at night!
Noise that goes above a certain decibel limit at night is illegal. But I doubt singing would count.

Why don’t you knock when it’s late and politely ask them to stop? They probably don’t think they’re being heard.

JustHereForThePooStories Sun 16-Dec-18 22:42:36

Report her to whom? Simon Cowell?

AGHHHH Sun 16-Dec-18 22:42:51

Do it in return so they also find it annoying and won't want to do it...

anniehm Sun 16-Dec-18 22:43:02

Depends upon what you mean by all the time, people can sing in their own home if it's not amplified during the daytime (8am-10pm), unless they are a professional opera singer it won't be that loud. My dd is a semi pro singer and I can't hear her unless I'm in the same room beyond a slight hum.

You must have really good soundproofing. sad I would hear it as though I'm in the same room wherever I am in this house!

When our neighbour moved in he wiuld strum his guitar and what i can only describe as wail in the early hours. It was a bloody nightmare.

My DP mentioned it to him ina jokey are you torturing your cat kind if way and hes not done it since!

AntiHop Sun 16-Dec-18 22:47:52

What time is she doing it at night?

orangesandlemmings Sun 16-Dec-18 22:48:07

I don't think you can report someone singing in their own home

Unless actually you think Derek has kidnapped someone who's passing the time by humming?? If I hadn't watched the movie about Michelle knight earlier my mind wouldn't have gone there!

Sparklesocks Sun 16-Dec-18 22:50:49

She might not even be aware she’s doing it. The most civil thing would be to knock on the door and gently mention you sometimes can’t sleep if you hear the singing at night and would it be ok to keep it doing during 10-7 or whatever. I don’t think the council would do much if you reported it to them.

springydaff Sun 16-Dec-18 23:00:46

Horrific that you can hear them yawning. oh God no wonder you're at the very end of your endurance - that is appalling.

Is it a private landlord? I'm sure there are legal obligations for soundproofing. Contact Shelter to get some advice.

You poor thing.

emmagreen481 Sun 16-Dec-18 23:02:32

I am due a baby in February so hoping to get some payback for it with the noise. And nope both council. And yes, it is opera music
